Is there a name like Juniper, but not Juniper?

allhailtheaubergine · 26/05/2011 15:08

Juniper is almost my perfect name.

My issues with is are

(a) it sounds like Jew nipper; one who bites Jewish people.

(b) nipper is an ugly sound.

But Juniper is lovely... and Juney is gorgeous, and my other daughter has a Woo, nature name...

What to do?

Rowan. Boy and girl suitable.

I do like Juniper. And I think that you will get over these connotations once it is the name of your child. One of DD's names is Juno. I love it.

Tamsin
Briony
Cassandra
Juliana

I actually love Honeysuckle [like the actress Honeysucle Weeks]

Youcantaffordme · 29/05/2011 17:08

The 'suck' bit isn't good, though, is it? It, er, sucks :o Never mind 'suckle'

OP - what is it that you most like about Juniper? Is it the rhythm, for instance should we be looking for 3 syllable names, or names beginning with J or tree names. I mean some of the suggestions seem to have little in common so perhaps you could steer us in the right direction.

allhailtheaubergine · 29/05/2011 17:34

I love Honeysuckle... except for the suckle bit.

What do I love about Juniper?

It's a nature name. It sounds a bit ethereal. The sounds themselves (devoid of meaning) are soft and sure. It makes me think of a tree or an elf. It is a good, solid thing with history and staying power and references in culture and literature.

Zenobia
Cypress
Oleander

TarquinGyrfalcon · 29/05/2011 18:00

I like Juniper

What about
Merywen (Welsh for Juniper)
Briar
Cedar

NoHunIntended · 29/05/2011 18:13

www.nymbler.com is a website where you can input some names you like, and it suggests similar names - hth.

Bue · 29/05/2011 20:52

My first thought was Bryony, Laurel, Sage, et al.

What about:

Sorrel
Romilly
Celeste
Columba
Lark
Amity
Acacia
Briar
Wren

... and now I give up.

Bue · 29/05/2011 21:01

Thought of one more. Avalon?

TigerseyeMum · 29/05/2011 21:20

OMG Tarquin I LOVE Merywen, I have never heard it before.

That has gone straight to the top of the list, in joint first place with Ariana Grin

So I need Welsh girl twins then.

RickGhastley · 29/05/2011 21:40

Welsh girl names are fab, how about Eira (snow) or Eirlys (snowdrop)?

TigerseyeMum · 29/05/2011 21:50

Is that pronounced Air-liss or Ire-liss?

TigerseyeMum · 29/05/2011 21:52

My Nan's name was Iris and I am tempted by that. It's so pretty but I can't decide if it's wierd using the name. I assume that is also a Welsh name?

TarquinGyrfalcon · 29/05/2011 22:09

Merywen is lovely isn't it

Other lovely Welsh names are
Celyn (holly if you want to keep to a nature theme)
Carys
Seren (star)
Arianwen
Blodwen (flower)
Enfys (rainbow)

Iris is beautiful as well

minipie · 29/05/2011 22:10

Jessamyn
Jocelyn
Madeleine
Arianwen
Autumn
Anemone
Dittany

RickGhastley · 29/05/2011 23:04

It's AYR-liss or IRE-liss depending on which welsh grandparent I ask!

vess · 29/05/2011 23:37

I like Juniper.
NOBODY will think Jew nipper, or nipper at all. The Juni- bit of the name is too strong.

lordsugarslovechild · 30/05/2011 20:59

Marigold.

Its beautiful.

Lintilla · 30/05/2011 22:48

Persephone (my favourite girl's name if I could get DH to agree)
Araminta
Honeysuckle
Meredith
Genevieve (I know it's been mentioned before but I think it's lovely!)
Flora
Elfine (I love Cold Comfort Farm)

Horseshoe1 · 19/11/2016 12:05

Larkin or Lilac?

Soubriquet · 19/11/2016 12:12

Since this was done in 2011 I think the OP would have named her 5 year old

SealSong · 19/11/2016 12:16

Celeste

YvaineStormhold · 19/11/2016 12:20

Juniper is a gorgeous name.

Please tell us your first DD's name. I love me a woo name.

YvaineStormhold · 19/11/2016 12:20

Oops. Buggering zombie threads. Fall for 'em every time.

Soubriquet · 19/11/2016 12:26

I always check the date now before I read a post
