Names you'd have loved, but couldn't use!

Just curious, are there baby names you'd have loved to use, but couldn't? For whatever reason!

My examples: my first child is a boy, and I loved the names Dylan, James, Tyler, or Max. We ended up not using any of them for various reasons. Dylan, my dh just hated. James, is my dh's best mate and my dh didn't want him getting a big head [confussed], Tyler, my dh said was 'chavvy', and Max didn't work with dh's surname (Chipps)- dh thought the boy would souns like a washed up superhero!

My ds ended up named Edward after dh's grandfather, which took some getting used to for me but I love it now :)

my second child (dd) is a girl. I loved Freya, Willow, Ruby, Isabella, Sophie, Leah, Imogen and Paige. Dh hated most of them, and said that Willow just made him think of the dwarf from the film! :o And of course, Freya Chipps...? just doesn't sound good!

I've loved Stella for years so slightly resentful of DH having a surname which starts St- Hmm

Same for any name ending in S eg Rufus (which DH doesn't like anyway) as the S just gets swallowed up in surname :(

I wanted Princess Tiiamii but that cow KP got in there before me dammit.

freesias · 28/04/2011 10:13

octavia skoda got there first

SpringFollows · 28/04/2011 10:20

We have a DS. We named him after a very beloved Gfather, and the name was not to my taste really but I LOVE it now. It just suits DS down to the ground and I love having that history.
But, I always wanted to name a son 'Ezekiel' or 'Reuven'. (Reuven is after a favourite book).

I dearly wanted to name a DD 'Hera'. I also adore 'Isabella' but that was the name of a much disliked family member, so no way.

SpringFollows · 28/04/2011 10:22

Oh, also loved Esther, but DH is a chemist and he vetoed.

stressedHEmum · 28/04/2011 10:42

Aoife, Mab, Grainne, Aislinn, Saoirse, Marsali, Caoimhe, Aobh, Iona, Ailsa - all too ridiculous, unpronounceable and impossible to spell apparently.

Hannah, Rebecca - too biblical

Oisin, Taliesin, Fionnlaigh, Ruaridh, Fearghas - see above

Gabriel, Isaac, - see above as well

Lachlann, Patrick, Sean - not good names for where we live (think west of Scotland, insular town)

Merlin - just TOO STUPID, well that was me told.

I think DH would have been happier with a Jack or Bob or something, but seeing as he never actually made any suggestions himself, I had to pick the names he objected to the least!

freesias · 28/04/2011 11:13

charlotte would always have loved a dd called this but dh's last girlfriend before me was a charlotte so couldn't use it

lottiejenkins · 28/04/2011 11:16

I love Hepsibah but never had a girl!!

LadyPelvicFloorsOfSteel · 28/04/2011 11:25

Ira - I really like the name but have a very Irish surname and it looks too much like a new branch of the IRA when it's written down.

Any Irish names as they'd just be too much with the surname (I was born and have always lived in England).

Sky - Didn't have a girl and almost certainly never will now.

xstitch · 28/04/2011 11:40

I wasn't allowed Saiorse or Marsali because then DH siad he wouldn't be able to spell it. Since he really can't spell and had to ask 'how on earth you spell Holly' a name that he couldn't spell pretty much rules out every name Hmm.

stressedHEmum I think you are near me. I also had the same problem, every name I came up with was shot down in flames I started off by calmly 'what name would you like' and got grunt every time. I eventually lost it after fifty to 60 name suggestions. I threatened to call dd John Paul (he was still the pope at the time) if dd had been a boy after my then FIL gave me a lecture on what names would be 'suitable around here' but then I don't have to try hard to annoy him.

OrangeBernard · 28/04/2011 11:50

Matilda
Evangeline
Niamh
Isadora

Merlin
Isaac
William

MarisCrane · 28/04/2011 11:58

I couldn't use Caiomhe or Lily as we had a boy (Dylan). I also love Leo for a boy, but DP doesn't like it. Stressed I love your list of names!

stressedHEmum · 28/04/2011 13:23

xstitch, it's a nightmare, isn't it? Sadly, I was never brave enough to do the John Paul thing, but I did tell ex-father-in-law that, if they didn't get off my case, DS1 would be Sean Patrick. He is an Ulsterman and we live in sectarianland so that freaked him out a bit Grin

MsChanandlerBong · 28/04/2011 14:19

I love the name Ariel - but dh won't even consider it for obvious brand name reasons.

Even when I protest "but it's after The Little Mermaid" or offer to spell it Arielle, he still isn't interested!!

BirdyBedtime · 28/04/2011 14:24

I always loved Brodie for a boy but DH's nephew called his DD Brodie (I still insist it is a boy's name) so I couldn't

Dita FWIW there was a girl called Stella Stewart at DD's nursery!

BirdyBedtime · 28/04/2011 14:25

BTW I LOVE your name Chanandler!!

MarioandLuigi · 28/04/2011 14:26

From the age of 8 I always said that if I had a boy I would call him Benjamin, and I still would have, but it sounds funny with DH's surname.

Mum2Pea · 28/04/2011 14:34

I love the name Aryan (indian name, children are half indian / half white)
however DH vetoed as said there would be too much conotation to the Aryan army :-(

also loved the names Saanvi for a girl and Aman for a boy - DH vetoes both for pronunciation reasons

DH loved Ronak (i liked it too) but no go as one of my cousins has that name!

PatTheHammer · 28/04/2011 14:35

These were mine, the reasons against were all Dh's logicConfused

For a girl:

Verity- an ex of DH's
Miriam-Reminded him of M.Stoppard the agony aunt
Delilah- Tom Jones Song

For a boy:

Frank-Frank Gallagher from Shameless
Patrick- Too irish
Henry- Its a train from Thomas (er, as are Loads of other boys names!) and a hoover.

thereisalightanditnevergoesout · 28/04/2011 17:12

Grin@ FoundationGarments

FoundationGarmentsOnOnesHead · 28/04/2011 18:53

Not funny! I was dead set on it too!!

farkthatforagameofsoldiers · 28/04/2011 18:58

Esme for a girl
Tobias for a boy

Their Dad vetoed them though, however I did actually end up with my most favourite name ever for ds by holding back on mentioning it for ages and ages till I was nearly 7 months pregnant and we had exhausted all other possibilities.
