Short(ish) list for DC2 - thoughts appreciated!

DC2 is due in July and DH flatly refuses to discuss names in any depth until nearer the time Hmm so thought I'd see what MN thinks of my shortlist...

We have a DS, Oscar, and our surname begins with an R and is 3 syllables if that helps?!

Any suggestions of other similarish names that would go well with the chosen middle names welcome.

Boys:

James (current favourite)
Jacob
Harry
Henry
Benjamin (DH not sure about this one)

Middle name will be Douglas after my beloved Grandad.

Girls:

Lucy (current favourite)
Elizabeth (nn Libby)
Hester (nn Hetty)
Rose/Rosie

Middle name will be Eva after DH's lovely Grandma.

You do know, don;t you that Henry and Harry are the same name?

Not sure that any of your girl's names go with Eva, though - sorry. Could you have Eva as a first name? Eva Rose?

seeker - I know Harry is technically a derivative of Henry, but I think it pretty much stands up as a name in its own right these days - I've never understood how Harry could be short for Henry anyway when it's the same number of syllables Confused

Eva Rose is beautiful but I just don't want Eva as a first name. I do know what you mean though about none of the names really going very well with Eva - but it's really important to DH to have his Grandma's name as the middle name if the baby is a girl (that much he has deigned to discuss).

I love Hester and Rose, but Lucy goes best with Eva, I think. Eva Rose is a beautiful name - I have one in my family, and she is beautiful too! Are you sure you don't want Eva first? Actually, now I think of it, are you pronouncing it Eeva or Ayva? If Eeva, then Lucy doesn't really work so well...

Oh, and I like all your boys' names, but James is my least favourite.

speculation - DH pronounces it Eeva. Bit tricky really as none of them go that well with it. I do think Eva Rose is lovely but definitely don't want Eva as a first name - I just don't love it enough.

James or Harry work best with Douglas (but all nice).
Hester my favourite of your girl names, but think Elizabeth Eva sounds best. Not wild on Lucy personally and doesn't run well with Eva IMO.

I'm glad James has been well received - I think James Douglas sounds quite good :)

I love Hester - maybe Hester Elizabeth Eva? Or is that too much of a mouthful?

I think DH's preference will be for Lucy, which I also like a lot, but it's the Lucy Eva thing that bothers me - it just doesn't really flow.

Ho hum. Better start hoping this one's a boy as well as that would simplify things!

I think Harry and Henry may sound awkward with a R surname.

I'm also not convinced Eva fits with the girls names as a middle one (and definitely not with Hester) but Eva Rose sounds lovely.

SoupDragon - you're right, the R R sounds together are a bit awkward.

noooooooooooooooooooo! you're not helping! Eva Rose IS lovely but don't want Eva as a first name. What do you think of Hester Elizabeth Eva? Or Lucy Elizabeth Eva? Although then her initials would spell LEER which isn't ideal.

I think Lucy Eva goes well. I like James, Jacob and Benjamin out of your boys names but I'm not sure if James goes with Douglas

Hester is lovely...Hester Elizabeth Eva is fine, beautiful in fact

Jacob is my fave of the boys to go with Oscar, think Oscar and Jake sound lovely together.

Hmmm.

So James and Jacob are my current frontrunners for boys.

It's the girls names that are troublesome.

I really do like Hester Elizabeth Eva.

Also like Lucy Eva - and I think this will probably be DH's preference - but I think I'm now leaning towards Hester.

Is it a bit too old fashioned though? Does anyone actually know any Hesters?

I know three Hettys, who really like their nicknames.

One is called Hester in full and loathes it to the extent that sometimes she pretends that it's actually Esther (I agree with her that Esther is nicer than Hester btw). She says it is a crone's name. She always goes by Hetty.

The second is a Harriet, which she quite likes and uses it interchangably with Hetty.

The other is called Heather in full and likes it too, and occasionally uses it but is mostly Hetty.

So... this is totally unhelpful as it is a sample of one person called Hester. But I wanted to point out (as you're fretting about Hester being old fashioned) that there are other roads to Hetty IYSWIM?

I know two Hesters, one is my cousin in the USA and the other is a friend from university, and both love their name. One goes by Hetty, the other by Tess.

Great name and my favourite from your list, with Elizabeth and Rose both equal second. I'm afraid I'm not keen on Lucy.

Boy wise, James or Jacob, but not both of them (i.e. no Jacob James or James Jacob) as they're both forms of the same Hebrew root name and so in effect are the same name (just in different forms)!

So I gently suggested Hester Elizabeth Eva to DH last night and he didn't give an outright no (nor did he refuse to talk about it which is his usual tactic) so there may be hope.

He still prefers Lucy though.

Oh well, we have a good few months to mull it over. I think we're pretty settled on either James or Jacob for a boy so at least that is easy.

Love it - great compromise. Eva is a tough one as a middle name as it doesn't work unless you end the first name with a consonant. And I much prefer Hester to Lucy. Much more impressive name.

And congratulations on your pregnancy - we were on the spring babies thread together with our first, but I can't really say who I was as I changed name and haven't changed back (long story Grin). We've just started trying for another, too.

Love Hester; love James.

Hester Eva doesn't flow terribly well though - I'd be tempted to add another name to break it up tbh eg: Hester Claire Eva / Hester Joy Eva.
