I love the name Rogan and have only ever heard it used as a boys name - but i am in love with it as a girls name :) It's an Irish name - Middle name would be Lilly. (NOT Josh :P )

I am taking all of this with a pinch of salt cos i know how brutally honest and blunt mners tend to be - esp when it comes to baby names!! If I had asked for opinions on a normal, common name i would have probably got a lot of posters ribing me for choosing a 'commom' name! I know the issues with growing up with an uncommon name, (i have one myself) but it's not like i'm going with Porshe or Princess bleeding Tiammi or what ever (this is an actual name, pleople!) I was mainly wondering what people thought about calling a girl a traditionaly 'boys' name. Eg like Morgan, Rowan, Blake, Finley - all boys names that i think are quite lovely for girls names too. Maybe its because i grew up reading Famous Five and my fav character was George :) And lets not forget the traditional names like Richard that gets shortened to Dick, or William to Willy - you don't go around teasy old men, do you? (ok that was me grasping at straws)

Anyway, those are my thoughts - still love the name, still thinking whether or not to use it, though - as I know people can be really mean about names (but seriously, are those people even worth knowing?) It's all a bit childish really :) and I hate to see some people (waves at notanumber) so ridiculously worked up about this.

So, yes - it is a real name - get over it.
Yes it is traditionally a boys name - what of it?

ps MmeSurvivedLent - great name change - you got my vote, even if my unborn (ok, not yet even conceied) DD has yours :)

[shrugs]

Not worked up about it. It is not my daughter who will come crying home to me saying that she is being teased in school.

You asked. We answered.

But don't think that people you meet in RL are not thinking the same, they are merely bound by politeness to say, "Oh, that is unusual for a girl".

n.b. when someone says the above, they are generally thinking "WTF?", not "Oh, how lovely".

MmeSurvivedLent · 12/04/2011 16:46

Thanks for the namechange vote.

Perhaps I am a bit oversensitive today, as my DD came home in tears from school because someone told her she was stupid. Kids can be cruel, and I want to save mine from upset.

I don't like it and think it's sad to give a girl such an ugly (in my opinion) name.

popAwheelie · 12/04/2011 16:53

Not my cup of tea sorry Wink

SaffaSouthernFairy · 12/04/2011 17:00

haha - glad mners are not bound by politeness! ;) i'm completely fine with your opinion - was down right expecting some people to have that view.. i find some completely innocent names vulgar - but thats just my opinion at the end of the day. Plus do not care for two faced people in RL anyway, nor let the opinions of people that i do not/ will not ever know get me down. I was curious about what people had to say and i am glad you, and everyone else, has answered.

Thanks, Saffa. She has had some apple crumble and is looking happier now

LetThereBeRock · 12/04/2011 17:54

It's hideous.Truly terrible.

LetThereBeRock · 12/04/2011 18:00

Sorry to hear your dd had such a hard day.though.Poor girl. Some kids can be very cruel. Hope that's the end of that nonsense.

LetThereBeRock · 12/04/2011 18:01

If you really like it,then perhaps as a middle name.

JanMorrow · 12/04/2011 18:04

curry!

emeraldislander · 12/04/2011 19:01

meh. Links to curry aside, it just doesn't sound nice on the ear. Regan (ee) sounds nicer. Morgna, Blake, Finley, Rowen all nicer names in my opinion.

emeraldislander · 12/04/2011 19:15

there is someone on the 'names to go with Brendan" thread that has a 'Brogan' which sounds a little nicer :)

rotay · 26/01/2020 13:59

my mom named me rogan, and i’m a girl. i’ve never met a girl with the same name, and i get compliments on it all the time!

BatleyTownswomensGuild · 26/01/2020 15:14

I don't think it will curry favour....

emilybrontescorsett · 26/01/2020 16:30

I wouldn't automatically think either male or female.
It sounds a bit like Brogan which I think can be either male or female.
I think it's really On trend as we see a lot of posts on here mentioning Roman, Rowan etc

Strugglingtoquit · 26/01/2020 16:55

The child in question is 8 now

Rachelhaydenberk1 · 26/01/2020 18:50

It sounds like Reagan to me which is a girls name. Reagan Lily is kinda beautiful actually and I never cared for that name before!

I do think Rogan could be a girls name here in America but I'm not a big fan of the name in general. It does pair with Lily well though shockingly.

Rachelhaydenberk1 · 26/01/2020 18:51

Oh wow did not see the date on this! I would say the mom is ahead of her time for the boy name as girl name trend!!
