I love the name Rogan and have only ever heard it used as a boys name - but i am in love with it as a girls name :) It's an Irish name - Middle name would be Lilly. (NOT Josh :P )

Regan is better.

Although that then reminds me of Ronald.

Rowan Lilly is lovely.

this site

Found it on here as a first name. In fact there's some really nice ones if you sift through.

BarbieLovesKen · 12/04/2011 15:03

I really like Regan too.

Rowan Lilly is gorgeous though..

notanumber · 12/04/2011 15:05

Not my personal taste, but it's ok I guess.

However - if you think that you - as her mum - are getting a bit of a ribbing with the old Rogan Josh curry jokes before she's even born, try to consider what it will be like for the poor girl in the playground when she's nine.

It is a name which invites piss-taking (goodnatured or otherwise). I think you need to bear this in mind when you are considering choosing Rogan.

You will be making the choice for her but then leaving her to deal with the fallout for the rest of her life. It takes a lot of confidence and self belief to not be bothered about an unusual name with an automatic joke attatched and she might be very shy or sensitive....

Of course she might totally suit it and absolutely love her name, but I do think you need to give it serious consideration.

Rowan is nice. Ramona is fantastic.

Ramona Lilly....

SaffaSouthernFairy · 12/04/2011 15:11

Thanks for the link foofffy - and thanks notanumber, but how many school children are that familiar with their Indian menus? :) Like i said - it's a proper name, not like i'm calling her Peaches or Apple :)

yeh do like Ramona - little girl from Outnumbered is called that - she is so sweet :)

I don't like it. It's harsh sounding, not at all feminine.

DownyEmerald · 12/04/2011 15:16

I don't like it, and tbh I wouldn't like it for a boy.

BalloonSlayer · 12/04/2011 15:17

You are joshing us surely?

"...how many school children are that familiar with their Indian menus? Like i said - it's a proper name, not like i'm calling her Peaches or Apple"

Yeah. But is an unusual name and it is a boys name. It's like calling a boy Amarylis. Do it if you're set on it, but you're kidding yourself if you recokon she's not going to get ribbed for it a lot.

Also, my son knows the name of plenty of curry dishes (including rogan josh) and he is pre-school.

And anyway they're in school a long time you know -they don't stick in reception. They go on to be ten and thirteen and seventeen..... Teenagers can be cruel to each other too. Imagine some lad she fancies saying to her, "God, no, I'm not going out with bloody Rogan Josh, hahahaha".

SaffaSouthernFairy · 12/04/2011 15:28

i already paid tribute to the 'curry' 'joke' in my OP - thereby making all your 'jokes' old and not funny. MWAHAHA :P

No you are not. Surely The Ramones is a plus point for the name? Grin

SaffaSouthernFairy · 12/04/2011 15:34

erm, no - i think i'll just roll my eyes and let them think they are being original

WMDinthekitchen · 12/04/2011 15:35

Waves to Barbie - agree that for me it's a surname!

SaffaSouthernFairy · 12/04/2011 15:38

hey yeh thanks Barbie and WMD - had a feeling that the first issue would be getting people to realise that 'Rogan' is infact a real name - i don't live in Ireland but new it was an Irish/ Gaelic name so was keen to here from people in the know. Thanks for the input!

OP posts:
BarbieLovesKen · 12/04/2011 15:46

Grin.

Seriously - I've never heard of a Rogan Josh. Had no idea about the curry Confused (sheltered life emoction... )

notanumber · 12/04/2011 15:48

Well - sounds like you've made your mind up, OP.

I really hope for her sake that she has a character to live up to the stick she's going to get.

I do still think that condemning a child to a lifetime of having to "roll her eyes and let them think they are being original" whenever she has to say her name is a bit mean though.

It's her that has to deal with that shit, day in day out, for her entire life - not you.

sowhatshallido · 12/04/2011 15:48

I know a family with that as a surname, so no for me!

MmeSurvivedLent · 12/04/2011 16:08

yes, but does it not give you pause for thought - that so many said, "It is a curry" and made vindaloo jokes?

If we are doing it, and it is easier for a not yet born baby whose mother may yet see sense then you can bet that your DD will hear it for the rest of her life.

Why would you put her through that? Maybe she will be a feisty little girl who is happy to set folk right, or she might hate her name all her life.
