Dh likes Susan, we have whittled down our long girls list to 10 or 12 now, but this is his favourite, and the only one he has suggested himself.

So what do we think of Susan? Definately not Susannah, just Susan.

Personally I prefer Susannah. To me, it's a little bit like the difference between Julie and Julia. I love the nn Susie for a little girl.

HettyAmaretti · 23/02/2011 08:55

No. It's awful. Doesn't go with your DS's beautiful names at all.

ValiumSandwich · 23/02/2011 09:35

I love Susie.

Susan would be different. The only one in her class.

I agree Susannah is the version that would be the most predictable choice now, but I see a backlash coming against all the names ending in -ia, -a, ella, elle, bel

chocolaterules · 23/02/2011 09:36

suzy is nice.
not susan imo

weegiemum · 23/02/2011 09:36

Its a great name

HettyAmaretti · 23/02/2011 09:38

yy Susie is sweet and could work with the other names. Susan really isn't pleasant.

sphil · 23/02/2011 09:39

preening here too. But I am 50!

sphil · 23/02/2011 09:39

And really not unpleasant....

Bonsoir · 23/02/2011 09:40

"but I see a backlash coming against all the names ending in -ia, -a, ella, elle, bel"

I think that is most improbable! Those are all classic feminine endings that have stood the test of time, again and again.

chocolaterules · 23/02/2011 09:41

i know so many sue's,
but no susan.s.

Slightlyreluctantexpat · 23/02/2011 09:42

It was very popular indeed in the fifties and sixties, so maybe it'll make a comeback soon. It'll be fairly unusual right now though, as a baby's name, that is.

chocolaterules · 23/02/2011 09:43

i prefer suzanne

i also prefer julia to julie

sphil · 23/02/2011 09:43

True, true chocolaterules. People only call me Susan if they're trying to annoy me.

weegiemum · 23/02/2011 09:44

I'm very pleasant! And always use the full name, I hate Sue, Susie etc ....

I'm 40. There were 4 in my year at high school. Not as many as Julie and Debbie and Lorraine but it was popular then.

That's cos its a coooool name!

I like Susan, fwiw.

LiquoriceLila · 23/02/2011 10:11

Its awful sorry.

BalloonSlayer · 23/02/2011 10:16

Susan isn't just a 1950s/1960s name like Karen and Tracy, it goes back further than that.

There was a play called "Black Ey'd Susan" in Victorian times.

MooMooFarm · 23/02/2011 10:17

I don't think there's anything wrong with Susan as a name, it's just that it sounds dated to me - probably because everybody I know called Susan is in their 40's or 50's.

Silly really though, because I think Amelia, for example, is a lovely name, but I know people in their 80's with that name.

berryshake · 23/02/2011 10:22

I think Susan's a beautiful name.

MarineIguana · 23/02/2011 10:22

Susie is sweet, you could officially call her Susan but have her be known as Susie and that would be fine. But Susan just makes me think of a middle-aged person. I do know a Susan who's about 30 and incredibly cool, but even then it doesn't quite fit her.

BuntyPenfold · 23/02/2011 10:23

I think Susan needs another generation to be really cool tbh.
I like it but I am the only person I know who likes Jill.

adamschic · 23/02/2011 10:26

I know someone whos middle name was Susan born around 1915 so it's an old name and I suspect it dates back much further. Very popular re my generation 1960's but totally out of fashion now. It will probably make a comeback but now isn't the time.

BuntyPenfold · 23/02/2011 10:38

In Mansfield Park, Fanny's younger sister was Susan. Must be 1810 (wild guess).
