Susan

Dh likes Susan, we have whittled down our long girls list to 10 or 12 now, but this is his favourite, and the only one he has suggested himself.

So what do we think of Susan? Definately not Susannah, just Susan.

If you know the OP's style then it's not surprising to see her suggest Susan at all. SHe has also suggested Jean recently. She likes names that aren't fashionable yet. i think it's fair to say TT that none of your children's names are 'trendy'!!

I like Ulysses btw. Not every family could pull that one off. At the moment, you could go either way with the next child. Ulysses would fit in, and susan would also fit in, but not in the same family as they are two polar extremes of your taste.

5DollarShake · 23/02/2011 13:12

My best friend is a Susan, but never (ever!) a Sue or a Susie. She has never actually banned those nicknames, but they conjure up such different images from Susan, you might as well call her Diedre or Janice.

In any case, if you call her something deeply unfashionable now, by the time your DD is an adult, the name will be bang on trend. This is what happened to me. Grin

ValiumSandwich · 23/02/2011 13:16

bonsoir do you really doubt that names ending in -a, -ia, elle, ella, bel, anna/ana are on the way out now???

They have 'stood the test of time' in that they come in and they go out of fashion, but imo they are already starting to go out of fashion! amongst the most fashionable, Grin

I say this not with a knowing haughty fashionable sneer btw. My children have these kind of names. I was influenced by fashion.

5DollarShake · 23/02/2011 13:28

Oh, and I have a 'bel' ending name, which was considered so old lady and fuddy fuddy in the early 70s.

I know it's hard to imagine the names we perceive as being so lovely now ever sounding wrong - but they will!

ValiumSandwich · 23/02/2011 13:29

yes, and it can happen quickly. My dd only 8, and whilst her name will do her fine for her life, and it would be silly to agonise over it.... it sounds a bit more like a name chosen in 2002 than it does like a name chosen in 2011. In my opinion anyway.

PorkChopSter · 23/02/2011 13:33

I don't think it goes with your other DC's names, sorry. Susannah would though.

But there are two Susans at my DC's primary school, so it seems to be having a resurgence.

adamschic · 23/02/2011 14:52

Oh yes OP I remember you posting your DC's names before and I thought, mistakingly, that it was a joke because they are all characters from Emmerdale. Now they are all lovely names so sorry about that.

I like Shem for a boy, very unusual, although it sounds like a shortened name. Not sure Susan fits in with the sibling's names.

crystalglasses · 23/02/2011 14:58

I like susan and Susie is nice for a child, but not for an adult. It sounds to twee imo.

HettyAmaretti · 23/02/2011 15:38

I know a Suzy in her mid 60's. She's anything but twee.

lovechoc · 23/02/2011 15:45

I love it. Easy to spell, needs a revival, go for it. Who cares if it isn't popular just now - it probably will be again one day soon!!

snoozin · 23/02/2011 15:53

When I was about 12, I decided that I wanted to be known as 'Susan' as it was so much more sophisticated sounding. Anyone who knew me before 1984 can still call me 'Susie', hehe.

rinabean · 23/02/2011 16:13

My lovely MIL is Susan (Sue) so I think it's a great name. :)

SusanNotTracy · 23/02/2011 17:27

Crystalglasses, I have never thought of my name as being twee. Unimaginative for 1968 perhaps, but twee, no. I think it is a very sensible name. My Mum wanted to call me Tracy but her friend had just had a Tracy. I am glad that I'm not Tracy though.

ensure · 23/02/2011 18:27

Susan goes with your other names much better than Suzanne does IMO.

ChippyMinton · 23/02/2011 18:36

I think it's due a revival. Quite refreshing for it to be used in full, as opposed to Sue, Susie.

Galdem · 23/02/2011 19:35

Love it. I do prefer Susannah, but Susan is still a lovely name in it's own right.

tummytickler · 23/02/2011 19:38

adamschic I am a little Blush you though my dc's names were a joke. I do not watch any of the soaps so I had no idea. I am off to google the cast list to Emmerdale now to make sure I don't get another characters name - I cannot have 5 Emmerdale children Shock

Jesus - do I look like a crazy Emmerdale fan!

Susie is twee. Susan is lovely.

MyUserNameWasGone · 23/02/2011 22:52

I like it, it is quite timeless, Susanna makes it a bit classy (nice) but I hate Suzanne.

MissHavishamsDress · 23/02/2011 23:25

I like Susan, tummytickler, but not love

I prefer Sybil, another name you suggested in the past - reminded of it on the Downton Abbey series

  • you have some great ideas for names, but not crazy about this one

What other names were on your list? Just curious as only 3 months to go with ours although we've pretty much settled for Daphne or Hector now.

muminthemiddle · 24/02/2011 00:11

Never one of my favourite names but maybe due a reviva. Think Narnia and all that.

Underachieving · 24/02/2011 00:44

Its horrible sorry.

Mspontipine · 24/02/2011 00:48

It's the most wonderfullest name in the whole wide world :)

IHeartKingThistle · 24/02/2011 00:58

It's my mum's name. She hates it. Sorry!

Lonnie · 24/02/2011 01:40

Reminds me of a girl I went to school with she was fantastic go for it beautiful name
