Dh likes Susan, we have whittled down our long girls list to 10 or 12 now, but this is his favourite, and the only one he has suggested himself.

So what do we think of Susan? Definately not Susannah, just Susan.

Let's make Susan popular again. I'm sick of not being able to find personalized tat in shops due to no one namming their little darlings Susan anymore! From a Susan : )

Slightlyreluctantexpat · 23/02/2011 10:56

A very good reason for choosing Susan is that nobody will find it difficult to pronounce, nor to spell. There are some truly weird names out there now.l

pseudonym101 · 23/02/2011 11:02

I love it.

OliveMalay · 23/02/2011 11:05

Susan is a lovely name. I prefer it to Susannah.

HettyAmaretti · 23/02/2011 11:10

tummytickler I really think it might be a good idea to mention you're DS's names. It does have quite a bearing IMHO.

TBH, whatever people think of Susan it really is quite a comedy combo with your DS's names. A bit like having Cassius, Aurora and Bob or Elizabeth, Victoria and Kevin.

ensure · 23/02/2011 11:47

I love the name Susan!

RockinSockBunnies · 23/02/2011 11:49

I think Susan is a lovely name. Makes me think of Susan Sarandon (most excellent actress).

paulbrom · 23/02/2011 11:52

Makes me think of "My Name Is Not Susan" by Whitney Houston. Which is ace.

OP, are you the lady who has Ulysses and something else a trifle unusual as your boy shortlist? Don't know what your existing LOs names are but I can imagine Susan may be a little incongruous with them. If you like Ulysses for a boy, what about Persephone or something for a girl?

I fear Susan might feel plain and unadorned next to her siblings. Or relieved. I get the impression that YOU don't really like it though, so if that is the case, tell your DH that it's tough but you're not feeling Susan.

Concordia · 23/02/2011 11:56

no i think the op is susan. did you read the other thread?

HettyAmaretti · 23/02/2011 12:00

Oh, but that's just daft! Susan is fine for someone over, say, 30. There were no Susan's at school with me but it wouldn't have been out of place at all. 'tis just out of cycle (in a bad way) ATM and doesn't work with her DC's names as a sibset.

HettyAmaretti · 23/02/2011 12:05

Point being: 'tis amusing to 'test' your own name on here, but a bit daft to do it when actually actively and publicly looking for a name for your child. Especially if you've very recently published existing DCs names.

Was going to do mine today, as it goes, but it's up ATM anyway and being loved. As usual.

paulbrom · 23/02/2011 12:07

tummytickler is the same poster who has Ulysses and Mortimer as her boy shortlist isn't she? Confused

paulbrom · 23/02/2011 12:08

Oh, I think I might get it, it's a thread about being called Susan not a thread about calling a baby Susan? Is that right? I might need a lie down now.

HettyAmaretti · 23/02/2011 12:10

Last I heard her absolute favourite was Shem. Here.

Looking back at that I think Susan really is an option rather than her name Confused

tummytickler · 23/02/2011 12:15

Susan is NOT my name - dh suggested it for dc 5 last night!
Shem is my favourite boys name - dh wont have any of it (at the moment - hopefully after a long hard labour he will change his mind Grin , this leaves us with Mortimer and Ulysses as the other boys names.
I could post the whole girls list if you like, Susan is the only one dh has added, he lets me do the looking really.

Lol The only name my DP suggested for DS was Jip (PRN Yip). WTF.

I think his history of crap interesting suggestions gives you full right to choose alone Wink

paulbrom · 23/02/2011 12:24

Please do post your girls list OP! Also can we have some context? For example, I live in a poor part of a northern city and if I had a DS and called him Ulysses he would get stick for it all his days, but if you live in London and your DCs are bound for Westminster School or similar, I can see that it wouldn't be looked at the same.

Shem is much nicer than Ulysses or Mortimer. Is it Hebrew or something?

tummytickler · 23/02/2011 12:31

I have posted the rest of the girls list!
Shem is Hebrew - yes.
I live near Brighton - I am going to name change tomorrow anyway as have given away loads of details about myself!
Other dc's are Iris, Pearl, Eli and Amos.

I love Susan

I associate it with the Susan in 'The Country Child'.

I think of it as a 1940s sort of name.

Shem is great! If I'd have had a 4th girl I was going to call her Susie (or Jeannie or Eliza). Susan looks quite a masculine name to me and looks out of place with your others. Great names btw. How about Dinah if you like biblical?

Susan is my big cousins name .
I love it .
i think its a beautiful classic name.

Janoschi · 23/02/2011 13:03

Susan is fab. I don't like the recent prissy tendency to add A's to the ends of names to make them apparently more sophisticated / girly. I love Helen but not Helena, Sophie is nicer than Sophia and Olive cooler than Olivia.

So a big thumbs up to Susan from me. :-)
