I have met a Danyal, Daniol, Naiphthan, Caytie and an Alivia. Why do people consign their children to a life time of 'no, that's Daniel spelt...'? Any equally terrible ones out there?

I know a girl named Beaux. Wrong on so many levels.

Hulababy · 19/12/2011 19:48

Is Kelsey not a different name to Chelsea, no idea if a made up one or not though.

I know of two boys called Jai - one pronounced Jay, the other J-eye

NanAstley · 19/12/2011 19:58

Jai pronounced J-eye is a legit Indian name...means victory

spiderlight · 19/12/2011 20:30

My son's at school with a Kaykay, a Kaylum and a Danny-Boy.

JinglePosyPerkin · 19/12/2011 20:38

Danny-Boy? Shock Is he Irish?

We must live in such a boring area - about the most "unique" variants I've come across are Maizie & Tyger (which is clearly an odd name in itself - and Tyger is a girl).

Come to think of it, I did know a Misty-Leigh years ago. People would think she was saying "Miss T Lee" when she gave her name Grin.

"I think the French have the right idea - they have to pick from an approved list by law. Providing the list was hugely comprehensive and reflected all tastes and cultural backgrounds I think that might be the way forward to make sure no-one has to grow up saddled with a name like Roksand just because their mother was a bit dim. At least we should be allowed to veto lunatic made-up spellings."

The same law applies in Germany, fellatio, and quite a few other European countries. The German law is interpreted so that you have to prove the name exists already in your culture (eg in a proper book of babies' names) AND that it is appropriate for male, female or both (so you couldn't call your daughter Rory or your son Mary). We found in practice that the registrars were a lot more laissez-faire with us than with native Germans. I don't think they wanted to question our choice for fear of being called racist (and we chose bog standard first names but Irish middle names to reflect our heritage) - however we know of a German couple who chose exactly the same names for their DD and the registrar objected. Sometimes the registrars really go too far: one mother told she wanted to call DS Max Philip and the registrar said, no Philip Max sounds better, so that's what they chose!

Given some of the lunacy on this thread, I do think a law needs to be introduced in the UK to save children from their parents' appalling spelling. At the very least the registrar should be obliged to show them a book with the standard spelling in it.

Badgerwife, does your DH teach in Liverpool? Only I used to know a lady from there who had a Jaxon.

DD1 is in a class with a Jorja and a Redd.

It's cruelty to children! My niece was at school with a girl called Q'munitie (pronounced community)....I wonder if she got teased about her chest?

Pishtushette · 19/12/2011 21:36

I love Aoife

JugsMcGee · 19/12/2011 21:41

I know a Jazzmyn. It drives me up the wall. These aren't different names, they're the same name with a silly spelling.

LovingChristmas · 19/12/2011 21:45

No where near as bad as most on here, but Ellena just winds me up, Nothing wrong with Elle, but Ellena, come on, Eleanor!! A much classier less chavvy spelling.

BabySilvertooth · 19/12/2011 21:57

I heard of twins named Shaun and Sean. Pronounced Shaun and Seen.

Oh!

woowa · 19/12/2011 21:57

Alix is a legitimate girl's name, it's a family name in my family, v old. They aren't all silly, just sometimes really unusual or older spellings which have come back.

moonbells · 19/12/2011 22:08

One friend suggested (tongue-in-cheek) Vyquetoriya for a girl after she'd read it somewhere.

CocktailQueen · 19/12/2011 22:12

I hate things like that. Jorja?? Eurgh.

craigslittleangel · 19/12/2011 22:18

My name is French. I usualy get it slept the Italian or British way. Everyone normaly gets it right the first time and then say it wrong subsequent times untill corrected. I have no idea why. Its the easiest name in the world. Said as it is spelt.

A friend of mine has taught a Shiester. Apparnetly you say it Shister. I have no idea why.

Red2011 · 19/12/2011 22:19

Oh Baby you just reminded me of twins my friend told me about - not stupidly spelled names but they were called John and Jonathan.

Miette · 19/12/2011 22:22

K.T. Danyaal and Chloe pronounced Clore, because that was how they thought it was pronouced when they saw it in the name book.

PuffOfSmoke · 19/12/2011 22:27

Can't remember what I was reading the other day, but the mother in the story was Karoline and the daughter Khloe!

zipzap · 19/12/2011 22:52

I don't know anyone called chlamydia. But I do know someone called Candida which is almost as bad!

And dh's niece is called Kelsey - she's Canadian and late teens - think it is a normal name over in N America - think of Kelsey Grammer (actor from cheers and frasier) (OK so must be one of those names that can be used for boys or girls). But certainly nothing to do with Chelsea - think her dad (British) would have a fit if he thought people thought he just couldn't be bothered to spell Chelsea correctly!

GurlwiththeFrothyCurl · 19/12/2011 23:23

I once knew a girl called Emense - pronounced "Immense". And she was very large.

oh my favourite snob topic

Mar-Kiss (Marcus)
Iliveagh (Olivia)
Joesph (clearly a spelling mistake)
Jaxon
Mercaidees
Rion
Hayzyl
Dallas-Reece
Mazi (short for Amazing)

imaginethat · 20/12/2011 05:35

I know of a woman whose nephew is called JD. Her sister (mother of the child) likes Jack Daniels, apparently I asked if the baby was actually called Jack Daniel, but no, just JD. Acutally, it might be Jaydee, but I was too to ask.

I know of a JackDaniels. No kidding.
