I have met a Danyal, Daniol, Naiphthan, Caytie and an Alivia. Why do people consign their children to a life time of 'no, that's Daniel spelt...'? Any equally terrible ones out there?

I know a Jorja, a BJ and a Wolfe, all mentioned on this thread - would be quite funny if they were the same ones.

Someone way back mentioned there being a baby Spike on the ward when they were having their baby - there was a Spike on the ward when my DD was born!

Am a bit dismayed at the comments about very lovely Scots/Welsh/Irish names, though. I'm Scottish but I have a very un-Scottish name. But I have plenty of friends with very Scottish names, and a DD with a name that has Celtic roots. It's part of the heritage of our country; I find people saying 'what's wrong with plain old...blah blah blah' a bit unpalatable.

Gillybobs · 19/12/2011 16:43

My friend taught a Lucy, although her parents pronounced it "Lucky"

Gillybobs · 19/12/2011 16:47

I also know a Sian pronounced Cyan...how odd if it turns out to be the same girl! She is from west of scotland, mid 30s

In the aftermath of the riots the Metro ran a few stories on families who had lost their homes. Obviously very upsetting and terrible for them, but there was one woman who kept being presented as a particular sob-story because her flat had been burned out and all her toddler's toys and clothes had been lost.

His name is Cam'ron.

It makes me weep a little bit every time I see it written down.

I've met a Roksand. Her mum meant it to be Roxanne.

Makenzy....meant to be mackenzie

FellatioNelson · 19/12/2011 18:45

Roksand for Roxanne? Shock

FellatioNelson · 19/12/2011 18:50

I think the French have the right idea - they have to pick from an approved list by law. Providing the list was hugely comprehensive and reflected all tastes and cultural backgrounds I think that might be the way forward to make sure no-one has to grow up saddled with a name like Roksand just because their mother was a bit dim. At least we should be allowed to veto lunatic made-up spellings.

JuliaScurr · 19/12/2011 18:58

Fellatio you beat me to it
It really should be illegal to call your child BJ
