I have met a Danyal, Daniol, Naiphthan, Caytie and an Alivia. Why do people consign their children to a life time of 'no, that's Daniel spelt...'? Any equally terrible ones out there?

OP posts:

I don't know many misspelt names, the only ones I know are:

Shevaun
Danyal
Benn

shouldnotbehere · 19/12/2011 13:28

Oh, just seen that Danyal is a correct spelling.

Re: Rachael, this is definitely a correct spelling (my cousins name is spelt Rachael). Also Rebekah is a correct spelling, as is Mathew.

Bonsoir · 19/12/2011 13:32

Where do you people live that children have such weird names?

Round me there are children from all over the globe but they are called things like Lilly, Timothée, Andrés, Abril, Simon, Gabriel, Max, Joséphine...

PositivelyThrifty · 19/12/2011 13:49

My daughter is Georgia, when we registered her the lady asked how we were spelling it and I must have looked confused because she said "Obviously the real way" and then explain about Jorja. It looks like soft J's to me, so when I read it I pronounce it Hore hah before correcting myself!

kimdeal · 19/12/2011 14:08

Yep Shouldnot Hull - Danyal is indeed the (correct) Arabic way of spelling. Nothing to do with being unable to spell. But as for Daniol, zatz kreativ, OP.

Am a youth worker and have worked with lots of young people who have an 'alternative' spelling or just plain odd - my favourites are Dayzee (Daisy) Brittnee (Britney) and a Summertreasure...

rainbow2000 · 19/12/2011 14:44

Rian is the irish for Ryan, its missing the fado though.Pronounced Reen.

My cousins' friend has just had a girl. Named seanknee. I kid you not. It's apparently pronounced shawneeXmas Grin

FellatioNelson · 19/12/2011 15:25

Someone posted a link to all births reg'd in the UK in 2010 the other day and I couldn't believe how many Daniel/Danyl/Dannial/Dannyal variations there were, plus:

Riley
Reilly
Ryley
Rhyley
Ryleigh
Rhyleigh
Rylee.............arrrgghhhh! I could go on all day!

FellatioNelson · 19/12/2011 15:27

And I once saw a Kamran written on a child's lunchbox and my son knows an Emmaleigh and an Alleighsha.

JugglingWithGoldandMyrhh · 19/12/2011 15:36

I couldn't help noticing Chelsee on Strictly - great dancing but "Chelsea" seems so much more natural ( But then we are Chelsea supporters here Xmas Grin )

JugglingWithGoldandMyrhh · 19/12/2011 15:43

Ooh, apparently, according to Wikipedia, she "was born Chelsea" - but has obviously changed it herself at some point.
Yes, I know, I do really have better things to be doing a week before Christmas

Clawdy · 19/12/2011 15:44

Kamran is an Asian name. DS's best friend is Kamran.

FellatioNelson · 19/12/2011 15:47

I KNEW someone was going to come back with that repsonse!

this Kamran was not Asian. He was white, English and his mother was a teenaged Pram Hun shopping in Poundland. (yes, I was in Poundland.)

manicinsomniac · 19/12/2011 15:53

According to the 2010 statistics 3 children were named each of the following names:
Abbiegail
Abbygail
Abygail
Adel
Agnese (Agnes?)
Aidah (Ada?)
Aivah (Ava?)
Alarnah
Alyx
Ameelia
Amey (Amy?)
Amii (Amy?)

And that's just the As of just the girls!

quirrelquarrel · 19/12/2011 16:00

Burst out laughing at "StayC" Grin

There was an Ailee in the Chalet School....not that bad! Never knew there was another version before. Eilidh looks v. pretty written down.

Love these sorts of threads...and a bit Grin that people get all het up about the "right spellings"...it's a name, you can have your pick, not a word in the dictionary!

quirrelquarrel · 19/12/2011 16:02

What about anglicising Russian names- I like Arkady.

KateShmate · 19/12/2011 16:02

Met a woman with a DS called 'Tomaz' - she said that it was the 'normal' way of spelling 'Thomas'....

There was a Lowleetah (Lolita) at DD's pre-school
Aswell as DD's friend, Graycee (Gracie)

In my DD's class there is a girl called Ambah - I commented on the lovely spelling, she said that I should have put an 'h' on the end of my DD's name (Isla) just to make it a bit different - 'Islah' - really?

Know of a 'Tiara' pronounced 'Tara'
And a Sunnee.. (Sonny)

Also, my other DD is a Jasmine, and we get all the Jazmin/Jazmyyn/Jassmin/Jaszmyn etc etc..

Ixia · 19/12/2011 16:13

I'm a Karen, my Mum insisted it was pronounced care-en, I'd given up correcting people by the age of 6 and I'm now a bog standard pronunciation. To be fair to my Mum, I was named after someone, so it wasn't a figment of her imagination.

I also went to school (30yrs ago) with a Sian, pronounced cyan - wonder if we all know the same one....

Popbiscuit · 19/12/2011 16:18

This thread is going to cause my head to explode.
