What do these girls names say to you?

So, DH and I just found out that we are having a girl after two boys. I'm in total shock as I though this was another boy. At least it means I can cross out half the huge name list. :)

So I'm wondering what these names say to you.

Elliot
Darcy
Scarlett
Madison
Phoebe
Aurora
Matilda
Elise
Xanthe
Trinity

Some are Dh's choice, some are mine. I would also like to know of anything that is massively popular. We live quite rurally so don't know loads of children.

I like Xanthe, Matilda and Phoebe best. I like Scarlett but I think it's becoming a bit too popular.

How about Elodie?

FjorgynAndHotWater · 18/02/2011 22:34

psammead I can imagine my Tabitha as a world dictator anything she puts her mind to

Horton · 18/02/2011 22:45

Me too, Fjorgyn. Mine is fearsome. I don't see it as a little girly name at all. Little girly names to me are things like Poppy, Mia, Evie, Kitty, Ellie.

FjorgynAndHotWater · 18/02/2011 22:52

Not that we should be encouraging others horton as Tabitha is still rare enougn to be doubly fantastic Grin

Bizarrely the only other Tabitha I actually know in real life is the DD of my SIL's SIL. So my nephew has two girl cousins, both called Tabitha Shock (obv mine came first...)

Hatterbox · 18/02/2011 23:24

Probably more for a boy, although I do think of 'Scrubs' witht he female doctor who is called Eliot.

Ah yes, but she does say in one of the earlier episodes, as her parents had all boys before her, they just assumed they were having another boy and picked the name Eliot.

When she ended up being a girl, they stuck with the name, so it is still hinting at the fact it is a boy's name.

LoopyLoopsHulaHoops · 18/02/2011 23:28

Sorry, I am going to be totally brutal.

Elliot - boy
Darcy - posh boy in Jane Austen novel
Scarlett - harlet
Madison - chav
Phoebe - spaniel
Aurora - Disney princess
Matilda - lovely name
Elise - Beethoven, but lovely name
Xanthe - posh girl from Brat Camp
Trinity - Mother of Rhinos

JulesJules · 20/02/2011 09:38

Arf at Loopy!

I LOVE Tabitha (not on your original list)

Galdem · 20/02/2011 09:40

Elliot - boy

Darcy, Scarlett, Madison, Trinity - footballer's kid

Phoebe, Matilda - nice names but cutesy, possibly with sisters called Holly, Tilly, Milly or Evie

Xanthe - posh, try hard

Elise, Aurora - lovely unusual names

seeker · 20/02/2011 09:45

All awful except Matilda, which is fab.

AmandaCooper · 20/02/2011 09:49

Have a Phoebe and adore the name Tabitha (never thought of it before!) Phoebe is quite well used, I'd consider Phoebe Tabitha or Tabitha Phoebe. I also love Xanthe and it's far more unusual.

UrsulaBuffay · 20/02/2011 12:22

before I had her, I mean, doh.

darleneconnor · 20/02/2011 12:28

Elliot-I'd think you were a big Scrubs fan, she would get confused for being a boy, but I actually really like the name. Note however though that ellie is vv popular and if she ends up being called this she will prob not be the only one in her class
Darcy- P&P fan
Scarlett-very trendy, celeb name, a tad sluttish
Madison- far too american
Phoebe- friends but nice
Aurora- fab name
Matilda- too of the moment and i find it boring
Elise- nice
Xanthe- trying too hard
Trinity- the matrix, nooooooo

Underachieving · 20/02/2011 15:01

Elliot- Boys name

Best ones:
Aurora- Love this, really pretty.
Xanthe- Really good, except it means yellow, which put me off using it a bit.
Darcy- Cute, a little boyish (always think of Mr Darcy) but goes with your sons.
Elise- Ok

I don't like any of the rest.

Nancy66 · 20/02/2011 15:24

Darcy - scullery maid, gets pregnant by the master and is booted out of the house

Scarlett - Burlesque dancer with giant breasts and red lipstick

Madison - hatchet faced chav with top-knot ponytail who'd screech 'wot you fuckin' look at' if you momentarily caught her eye.

Phoebe - Sweet, kind, bit fluffy and a teensy bit thick

Aurora - Posh pain in the arse who works in PR and goes to the country every weekend

Matilda - Nice girl, pretty, popular and pleasant to have around.

Elise - New money bimbo. Got a Porsche for her 17th birthday along with breast implants. Tangerine coloured and will marry a footballer. Will stand by him when he gets caught out with Trinity (below.)

Xanthe - New age drip. Alays trying to cleanse your aura and balance your chakras

Trinity - Hooker

Tabitha - Cool. Arty, feisty, independent and laughs in the face of the dullards who go on about her name being a cat's one.

mrsunreasonable · 20/02/2011 16:07

Elliot - a boys name

Darcy - Mr Darcy or anorexic ballerina

Scarlett - Scarlett Woman

Madison - Like it but becoming very popular

Phoebe - Nice but make sure you like Pheebs

Aurora - hippy parents
Matilda - becoming very popular and often end up being Tilly which reminds me of a cat

Elise - Like it

Xanthe - mmm not sure I think people would always spell it wrong

Trinity - part of me likes it part of me thinks eugh especially as she is your third could seem a bit twee

ensure · 20/02/2011 19:05

I like Elise and Tabitha best. Aurora, Elliot, and Phoebe are quite nice too.

ozzysocks · 20/02/2011 19:33

Hi Eglu
I have 2 Ds's and am pregnant with a girl too :)I am booked for an elcs tomorrow!!!
I found it much harder to choose a girls name I think there is so much more choice.
Out of your names I love Tabitha (DH doesn't) Matilda is lovely but I know a few (I like Tilly as nn, I must like cat names:)), Elise is a lovely name very pretty.
I'm not keen on Trinity,Elliot,Darcy, Madison, Aurora, or Xanthe.
Scarlett, Phoebe are very popular here.

What about Eliza? Good luck :)

WaddlingSheep · 20/02/2011 19:44

I love Aurora! It's beautiful. What about Aurelia? It's a bit similar but perhaps not as Disney Princessy.

The others from your list that I like are Elise and Scarlett, particularly Elise.

Don't like Madison as I always think of it as a boys name because I'm sure the meaning is "son of Maud."

Eglu · 20/02/2011 20:22

Waddlingsheep we had Aurelia on the list too, but it sometimes feels like a bit of a mouthful

OP posts:
Indith · 20/02/2011 20:39

Elliot- Boy
Darcy- Meh
Scarlett- Annoying brat (possibly coloured by some small scarletts I have known)
Madison- Meh
Phoebe- Kind of cute
Aurora- A Disney Princess, should remain in Disney world.
Matilda- Lovely
Elise- Lovely
Xanthe- Not keen, nothing wrong with it just not me.
Trinity- Nope
Tabitha- Lovely

Aurelia is nice but I am wary of it. My middle name is Aurelie, it was to be my first name but my mum (who is French) changed her mind when she realised how much trouble the Brits has witht he "Au". People say Owrilly, Oraly, Orilly but never actually get it right.
