So, DH and I just found out that we are having a girl after two boys. I'm in total shock as I though this was another boy. At least it means I can cross out half the huge name list. :)

So I'm wondering what these names say to you.

Elliot
Darcy
Scarlett
Madison
Phoebe
Aurora
Matilda
Elise
Xanthe
Trinity

Some are Dh's choice, some are mine. I would also like to know of anything that is massively popular. We live quite rurally so don't know loads of children.

I like Darcie spelt this way as more girlie and less associated with Mr Darcy.
I like Elise but like Eloise even more.

Elliot-Tomboyish, clever kid, adventurous.

Darcy-parents wanted a girly girl. Attended ballet classes throughout her childhood, but secretly didn't like it, preferred reading books and doing rearch in the library.

Scarlett-very fiesty. Grew up to be a lawyer and a very successful one at that. Engaged to her long term extremely good-looking boyfriend and lives in an amazing city centre loft apartment.

Madison-not very bright and never popular at school. Resented good looking Scarlett and intellectual Darcy.

Phoebe-adorable cute child. Successful in later life.

Aurora- Always singing and dancing (made Darcy's parents secretly jealous) now a west end star but still on good terms with all her childhood friends.

Matilda-middle of the road child dispite her parents middle class aspirations for her. Happy as a sham with her delightful country house and loving husband.

Elsie-shy child who grew up to be a primary school teacher.

Xanthe-works abroad as an aide worker. doesn't stay in touch with her old friends. Parents very proud of her.

Trinity-a spoilt, loud, petulant child with straight dark hair and very lanky.
Has a job working for a major foreign bank. Quite secretive about her actual job title but obviously earns a mint. Lives in a minimalist apartment and wears understated expensive clothes.

Tabitha-popular intelligent child, always had lots of friends. Was best friends at school with Trinity. Has several cats.

Baby names are really difficult, especially when you consider school nicknames...and popularity/commonness

Elliot - nn = smelly lot (boys' name, and IME older people will keep asking about dragons)
Darcy - nn = arsey
Scarlett = quite nice, only one I know is american
Madison = vv popular / common in our area
Phoebe = quite popular
Aurora - nn = roarer
Matilda - read the Roald Dahl book before you decide
Elise - quite nice
Xanthe - nn = pantsy. Nightmare for the child to spell
Trinity - probably okay among children, other parents may wonder about your obsession with The Matrix
Tabitha - cat

ChippingInFanciesCheeseOnToast · 21/02/2011 00:37

Elliot - the elephant
Darcy - the ballerina
Scarlett - sad connection for me now
Madison - friend has a daughter with this name - proper little pain in the bum
Phoebe - friends
Aurora - salad/disney
Matilda - film
Elise - meh
Xanthe - no
Trinity - poster on MN

Hmmm - I'm sure you'll come up with something fab, you did for the boys :)

Italiangreyhound · 21/02/2011 00:56

Congratulations on your pregnancy and baby girl on the way.

It's really what name you like and what says something to you!

But to give my opinion I definitly like Aurora and Tabitha are best and also like Elise.

The Disney element for Aurora is not a big thing at all as I don't think many young children (your daughter's peers) will know it, plus in the film (watched it the other day) she also has the name Briar Rose and there are lots of Rosie's about and no one says 'Sleeping Beauty'!

Elliot - Scrubs and I think of it as a boys' name
Darcy - Pride and Predujdice, Bridgette Jones and that hair dressers soap TV programme
Scarlett - Scarlett Johannson
Madison - Nice but not keen
Phoebe - Freinds
Aurora - Extra super really lovely
Matilda - that moveie about a kid
Elise - Lovey
Xanthe - Not my cup of tea
Trinity - Blade Trinity film and The actual Trinity (though not necessarily in that order!)
Tabitha - Really lovely

If you want to limit yourself a bit then with your boy's names you could rule out any that start with S or C!

All the best. Smile

RantyMcRantpants · 21/02/2011 01:33

CONGRATULATIONS ON YOUR PREGNANCY. (oops sorry caps Blush

I am a really big fan of Aurora but being one I am biased Grin

LoobyLou33 · 21/02/2011 20:56

I think Aurora is beautiful and am considering it if we have a girl, but I was a bit put off when I told my sister and she pulled a face! I think it might be one of those love it/hate it names which doesn't matter if you love it! I do think it's hard to shorten without going for Rory which is maybe too blokey.

RantyMcRantpants · 25/02/2011 01:19

Rory is fine as a shortening for Aurora, thank you very much and I speak as a very feminine Rory. It's great for the career as well.

Maud2011 · 25/02/2011 08:01

Elliot - boy
Darcy - surname but pretty enough
Scarlett - O'Hara - pretty but she'll have to be a feisty one and put up with lots of GWTW jokes
Madison - square! (don't, please don't!)
Phoebe - pretty but feeble
Aurora - Sleeping Beauty, pretty but oh dear, what if the poor mite can't say her Rs?
Matilda - lovely, with plenty of scope for shortenings if that's what you/she like
Elise - pretty
Xanthe - lovely but obscure, you'll be explaining all the time how to pronounce it
Trinity - happy clappy Shock

MrsMiyagi · 25/02/2011 20:57

Elliot - boy's name
Darcy - like it, but prefer Darcie
Scarlett - done to death, surely
Madison - spoilt brat, baby with pierced ears
Phoebe - lovely but v popular
Aurora - Disney. How about Giselle?
Matilda - lovely but v popular, how about just Tilly?
Elise - nice, prefer Eloise
Xanthe - lovely, but would worry that you'd need a beautiful willowy child to carry it off
Trinity - made up

MissHavishamsDress · 26/02/2011 23:16

Elliot - not for a girl
Darcy - ditto
Scarlett - used to love, now think flash celeb wannabe
Madison - nope - common American
Phoebe - better
Aurora - bit too posh
Matilda - nice, fairly common in SE
Elise - pretty
Xanthe - my favourite, means golden-haired (or just golden?) - love its soft sound, and classy too
Trinity - bit flash and common, much prefer Liberty

tiptoptally · 27/02/2011 01:19

Elliot - boys name, would suggest you expected a 3rd son
Darcy - prefer it spelt 'Darcie'. It rhymes with 'arsey' which makes it a no-go for me. Also a bit too trendy/common at the moment.
Scarlett - This has been my favourite name for about 20 years!!! Unfortunately my DP can't get past the fact it rhymes with 'Harlot' - would you want her known as Scarlett the Harlot as a teen?
Madison - too trendy/common at mo
Phoebe - nice, v girly
Aurora - different, really lovely & girly. Would work well for both a child and a woman.
Matilda - nice
Elise - I like this, kind of a more feminine 'Elliott'
Xanthe - hmmmm....it should be nice, but there's just something really wanky about it (sorry!!)
Trinity - just think of the Matrix. As she's your third tho, might make a nice middle name?
Tabitha - buy a pet cat instead!

Oceynorm · 27/02/2011 01:50

Elliot - usually known as a boy's name... although you could change it to Ellie?!
Darcy - Not a fan, when i hear it being said, or written reminds me of MR Darcy the film
Scarlett - It's okay (i hope your child doesnt have a possibilty of red hair though) i would rather choose Amber or Ruby over Scarlett, it just sounds a bit harsh for a brand new baby.
Madison - reminds me of that old band, madison avenue. although i do like Maddie
Phoebe - I like it, my friends just called her baby Phoebe.
Aurora - sleeping beauty. Could you not use Lola instead?
Matilda - yeah i like this, and it cant really be shortened to anything.
Elise - Car, Lotus Elise!!
Xanthe - how do you say this? do u expect a child to learn how to say it and spell it before it gets to high school!?
Trinity - is a cancer hospice near Blackpool.
Tabitha - reminds me of a Cat's name
