Jago??

My brother has just been on the phone to my mum,his wife is due ds1 in 3 weeks.They are thinking of jago,my mum is a bitbut is happy if they love it.

Ive never met another jago.what do you think?

Not sure that is how you spell it but they said it like jay go

I know a couple of boys called Iago, which is the Welsh version. I think Jago is the Cornish version and is AFAIK pronounced the same.

It's a good strong name though might be more obvious if there were a Cornish connection. I know one, aged 2.

There are a few Jago's in our area.

They all belong to terribly posh, boden skirted, pearl wearing, volvo driving bankers blondes, exist on a diet of organic berries and homemade smoothies and have elder sibblings at private school.

nearly called ds this, actually wish i had as the name i eventually chose is getting a little bit common. jago = lovely name.

He said Jago with a j,should it be a y?Hmmm, bearing in mind they have just read this in a babyname book,I will give him a call and try and drop this into conversation!

I'm not sure TBH, I always assumed it was pronounced the same way as the Welsh version (a lot of Welsh and Cornish pronunciations are similar, teh languages have similar origins) but I could be wrong as I have never met a Jago only a Iago.

Thanks everyone,they are so excited and I know they will secretly want the family to "approve" of their choice as its quite unusual.

I'm from Plymouth, and there are lots of Jagos here, although more surnames. And it's definitely pronounced Jay-Go.

I wouldn't like to call a baby Iago- have these people never seen Othello? No good will come of that name!

Ds middle name really wanted it as a first name but worried that

A) he'd have to do PPE at Oxford as all the other Jago's I did some variant of this

B) people would assume it was Iago which it isn't

C) we'd explain it wasn't Iago and people would say 'how unusual' we'd say 'it's Cornish' they'd say 'oh are you Cornish' and we'd say no. Repeat 6 million times.

Only a tiny bit regretful we didn't go for it.

I love it, Cornish version of James...unfortunately dh thinks someone called Jago "sounds like a d*head" so not sure I will ever get to use it!!

I always thought it was a misspelling of Diego. Which I suppose it is really, from hundreds of years ago when spelling wasn't so fixed.

There is a lovely Jago in DD's class. Lovely name and a really lovely boy.
