Both DH and I love Cuthbert and liked it separately before telling each other - this is the only name that this has happened with.

DH is a fan of the Dark Tower series which I think is the reason that he likes the name.

I've just liked it since I can remember.

Cuthbert nn Bertie

The problem is EVERYONE and ANYONE that we've mentioned it to seems to really dislike it. Some have said that it would be cruel to name a child Cuthbert.

What do you all think - is it that bad?

It doesn't do much for me, but I know one who's about 13 now, and it's not been a problematic name for him.

Our Playmobil builder/Prime Minister has a personal police protection officer called Cuthbert, so we are rather fond of it. Tbh, I think most other children don't have the same preconceptions about names that adults have, so he'd probably be fine, even though it's unusual and not at all trendy.

I don't like it at all, sorry. But iirc there is a MNer with a son called Cuthbert - cant remember who. Not fond of Albert/Bertie either but really like Bartholomew/Bartie.

Oh and I love the Dark Tower - but would go for Roland or Alain or even Eddie (Edward)over the name Cuthbert!

St Cuthbert of Lindisfarne! I though the name sounded familiar and slightly middle ages which it appears to be. I like it.

Who knows you might even set a trend.

Depends where you live/what your background is. I know 2 groups of people who have used the name Cuthbert and would think it a 'normal' name:

  1. Catholics and Anglo-Catholics in the north-east where Aidan, Bede and Cuthbert are still very popular (not so much as names for children, but certainly as historical figures, and the boys I know with these names don't get as much stick for it as I think they would in other communities).

  2. Africans (I know a Ugandan and a Ghanian calledd Cuthbert) and perhaps other cultures which habitually chose an English name for interacting with wider society as well as a name in their own language for home.

TBH, I wouldn't dream of calling my son Cuthbert, I think it sounds awful,but if you and DH both like it and you think it suits the baby once he's born, go for it. Follow the golden rule: if you helped to make the child, you get to help name the child, otherwise butt out. Smile

Well BelligerentGhoul you've just got Roland thrown into the mix.

DH loves it - I like it, but I think it will grow on me. My only issue - I'm concerned he would end up being called 'Rollie'?

What do people think to Roland?

Oops! I think Roland will always remind me of the boy in Grange Hill tbh and the silly way that the girl used to pronounce it.

Still doesn't stop me fancying Mr Dark Tower Roland though!

hmmm I don't mind Bertie...think that's what Patsy Palmer just called her baby...really don't like Roland but prob because I know one AND Roland Rat!?

Cuthbert is a wondeful and strangely underused name. I think there should be more of them around!

I'm am the mystery MNetter with a Cuthbert, at your service. These reactions are pretty typical OP; the fact is it's just not a fashionable name. But I find people are less critical towards Bertie or Cuthy. Or in our case; Cully. It's always a matter of personal choice - DH and I loved it for the historical associations and for the Tintin character. My dad was a vicar and he used to read me the stories of the old saints when I was young.

FWIW I'm from the south east where there's no particular trend for old saint's names, but he gets on well enough.

I think it's quite nice. I cam imagine a well-read, suave, handsome lad with a name like Cuthbert. He might be a bit of a thesp, too.

I LOVE Cuthbert - an excellent name.
Roland is good too - I particularly like Rollo for short...
Cuthbert will definitely end up being an actor.

The only Cuthbert, I know changed his name at the age of 10, he preferred Jack. It may sound cute on a toddler /preschool but older. NO.

I actually quite like Cuthbert and the fact that it isn't already used by thousands others.

Not keen on Bertie though.
