Eloise or Elise?

nopinkplasticshite · 28/01/2011 15:16

We won't even get started on the boys names because that is proving to be a complete nightmare for OH and I to decide - but on the girls names we have narrowed it down to Elise or Eloise.

We have a short (3 letter) surname so I think the extra syllable in Eloise is better but DH likes Elise. Your opinions would be great, thanks!

I like them both. If you prefer the extra syllable, you might consider Elisa (Italian for Elizabeth, I believe) and just as pretty in my view.

TmiEdward · 28/01/2011 16:05

Personally I prefer Elise, but I can see your point re the syllables,

friedeggs · 28/01/2011 16:30

I prefer Elise but then Im bias, as that is my name. Everyone compliments me on it all the time, even now in my late 30s. I do sometimes have to repeat myself as people hear Denise, Louise, Alice but its a good coversation opener!

PelvicFloorTrauma · 28/01/2011 16:32

Love them both

GwendolineMaryLacey · 28/01/2011 16:34

I went to school with two Elises in the eighties. friedeggs you didn't become a teacher or move to Yorkshire when you were a kid did you? :)

friedeggs · 28/01/2011 16:40

Smile nope, not me

pirateparty · 28/01/2011 16:40

I prefer Elise tbh.

GwendolineMaryLacey · 28/01/2011 16:44

That's ok then, I couldn't bear either of them...

On a serious note, I have a new little niece called Elise and it's a lovely name.

nopinkplasticshite · 28/01/2011 16:45

Ohhh... that's interesting - thank you for your opinions. Am I the only one who associates Elise with the car ... Lotus Elise? DH is a complete petrol head and doesn't think this is a problem!

I know an Eloise who had to put up with Ellie Wees in the playground.

So I prefer Elise.

nopinkplasticshite · 28/01/2011 16:52

You see that's exactly the sort of thing that MN is brill for - I never those of Ellie Wee's!!

OP posts:
nopinkplasticshite · 28/01/2011 16:52

sorry - meant "thought of" Ellie Wee's!

I'm named after a relative called Elsie. But my parents shifted the letters around and called me Elise.

Just a thought on pronounciation.
I'm an ell-eeze.
I know an ell-eese.

ttalloo · 28/01/2011 17:03

happy to have been of help, OP!

IHeartKingThistle · 28/01/2011 17:03

Love Elise. And Beethoven's 'Fur Elise' is lovely too!

nopinkplasticshite · 28/01/2011 17:04

Yes TmiEdward - I like the ell-eeze pronounciation far better and was worried that people would mis-pronounce it.

Re the car thing - I never thought of it, but when I suggested it as a girls name for this baby, my DH immediately said it's a car! Don't think it matters at all either.

hellymelly · 28/01/2011 17:06

Both those are really lovely names,I really can't choose between them.

pointydug · 28/01/2011 17:07

Eloise

nopinkplasticshite · 28/01/2011 17:19

Okay - whilst I have your attention and nobody has said so far that they hate BOTH those names - how about the boy's names. We have a Spencer and a Harrison. I know, I know... I didn't know it was so....em...popular /common before we chose the Harrison!! But it my defence it goes really well with our surname (I think!).

Any suggestions for boys names. I kind of like Curtis, Travis, and Glynn but am prepared to be told they are awful and are more surname instead of first name. I also like Otis but DH isn't a fan. Go on - let me have it on these names!!

PlanetLizard · 28/01/2011 17:33

Elise

GwendolineMaryLacey · 28/01/2011 17:39

Glynn. Love it. Curtis and Travis both have mullets.

mum295 · 28/01/2011 17:40

We also had Elise and Eloise on our shortlist for DD - Elise for same reason as TmiEdward (re-jig of Elsie).

But couldn't persuade DH so we went for something else French.

Both will be back on my list for DC2. Wish me luck!

JojoMags · 28/01/2011 19:57

Not keen on Elise. Doesn't sound 'finished' to me. Eloise is OK, though prefer Eliza.

Really dislike Travis and Curtis. Sound like cheesy characters from 90s neighbours (sorry, but honest). Glynn is the best of the three.

NadiaWadia · 29/01/2011 10:48

Eloise. Elise is nice too, though.
