I have just had a baby and one of the babies in the ward with me was called Aladdin. Hideous! Another was called Jayzee - needless to say both mothers were teenagers trying to go for a different name.

I quite like it. Laddie for short. Very Lost Boys.

ChippingInSmellyCheeseFreak · 24/01/2011 22:24

I'm beginning to think a list of permitted names isn't such a bad idea after all!

QueenLaQueefer · 24/01/2011 22:28

Isn't it an actual Arab name?

suwoo · 24/01/2011 22:28

10/10.

TheMonster · 24/01/2011 22:28

NO NO NO.

WilheminaAteHer · 24/01/2011 22:29

Hey, unfair comment against teenaged mums. I know several who've chosen lovely names for their kids. I can also think of adults we all know of who have decidedly not: Gwyn and Chris, Katie and Peter, Elle McP. Need I say more?

PlanetLizard · 24/01/2011 22:45
Biscuit
BarbieLovesKen · 24/01/2011 23:03

What did Elle McP call hers? (nosey)

WilheminaAteHer · 24/01/2011 23:04

Something like Aurelious.

clumsymumluckybaby · 24/01/2011 23:05

what did you call yours then?

Muira · 24/01/2011 23:09

Aladdin is a genuine, traditional Arabic name - I know quite a few guys called this. Hmm at you in your judgey pants. Tell us what you named your baby and see how you feel when we all go Confused

icapturethecastle · 24/01/2011 23:10

How funny - I have been reading Aladdin to DS this week and wondered to myself if anyone would call their son this. Better than Badroulbadou, his princess my DS says princess badoobedo.

MardyBra · 25/01/2011 00:58

A whole new wooooooorld....

Expecting06112010 · 25/01/2011 08:31

and also the ''needless to say both mothers were teenagers'' comment dosent sit right with me not when i hear some of the names older mums give to their children these days!

mayanna123 · 25/01/2011 10:01

What a mean, ignorant thread. Aladdin is a lovely, genuine name - I know a lovely one in his 40s. And actually makes a refreshing change from all the Alfie, Archie, Jacks around. Why are we so narrow minded and critisize anything just because it is different??

OP, what did you name your child???

shoobidoo · 25/01/2011 10:04

Aladdin (Arabic: عَلَاء ٱلدِّين, ʻAlāʼ ad-Dīn) (also spelled Ala-ud-din, Ala-ad-din, Alaeddin, Alauddin, Allaedin, or Alaattin) is a male given name which means "nobility of faith" or "nobility of religion".

Lovely name with a lovely meaning imo Smile.

Yes, OP, what did you call your baby?

shoobidoo · 25/01/2011 10:05

sorry, that didn't come out quite right, I'll try again:

"I have just had a baby and one of the babies in the ward with me was called Aladdin. Hideous!"

What a judgmental, narrow minded attitude. What did you call your baby??

ThePosieParker · 25/01/2011 10:25

It is hideous.....this is the UK where Aladdin can be found every winter at a theatre near you...

flopsy1974 · 25/01/2011 10:53

I agree. It sounds silly in the UK and the poor kid is very open to bullying when he gets older.

juneau · 25/01/2011 11:58

Poor kid! He's going to have a lifetime of being asked if other kids can rub his lamp!

evamummy · 25/01/2011 12:16

I still think it isn't nice to call someone else's newborn's name hideous (without being asked for opinions). What if his mummy is on mumsnet? How would you feel? And what if they have strong Arabic connections? Should they still call their baby Jack or Charlie just to 'fit in'?

mopsyflopsy · 25/01/2011 12:19

I have an Arabic friend called Aladdin, nickname Al. It's not that bad, is it Confused?
