Edith nn Edie?

We're really after an unusual name and not one that will explode in popularity like Matilda and Martha did.

Is Edith nn Edie safe from this? And do you like it?

I find it a "hard" name

BUT IF YOU like it you should of course use it

clutterqueen · 23/01/2011 20:34

I really like that. Would have liked to have gone for that one - am crap at baby naming! I don't think it will be safe from popularity however.

arentfanny · 23/01/2011 20:35

OUr Edith was 5 yesterday, still hasn't got anywhere near the top 100.

Horton · 23/01/2011 20:36

Really love this. I wanted to call DD Edith but DH vetoed it (as well as several other extremely nice names).

PlanetLizard · 23/01/2011 20:39

Lovely :)

Esmee · 23/01/2011 21:10

I think it's really nice, go for it!

EvaManeva · 23/01/2011 21:12

Thanks all. My son is called Stanley (he is 6) and I am gutted at how popular it's become. Don't want the same happening with my daughter-to-be's name!

Love it love it love it. DH vetoed it for DD2 but she would have been Edith Sophie or Edith Elizabeth.

AprilMeadow · 23/01/2011 21:22

Some very good friends of our have an Edith who is 2yrs 8mths and she is gorgeous and suits her name down to the ground. They named their second dd (our god daughter) Nancy and again suits her to a tee.

I love your little boys name as well. Stanley & Edith go very nicely together

Hatterbox · 23/01/2011 21:31

I love the name Edith, a really fine choice indeed.

It has been rising the last few years, but it's still nowhere near the Top 100, its recent positions:

2007 - #293
2008 - #284
2009 - #253

However, although it has been rising, it is only very slowly and I can't see it ever reaching the Top 100 like Stanley did.

thecoffeelady · 23/01/2011 21:37

I have 2 DDs my big girl is 2yrs 8mths and she is Edith (nn Edie) Sarah Anne and my baby girl 5mths is Nancy Elizabeth Rose. I have always loved the name Edie and always knew that I would call my daughter Edith. I know I have picked 2 'old lady' names but I prefer the term classic. People still look at me strangely when I tell them what my daughters are called. I really can not see it ever being popular.

It also gets you away from those people that try and flog you personalised stuff as they NEVER have Edie/Edith Wink Smile

bestmamaderwelt · 23/01/2011 21:37

I think its lovely but i thibk lots of other people do do, aslo know a couple

isthismadness · 23/01/2011 21:41

So aprilmeadow and the coffeelady know each other then?;)

jellybeanstastepurple · 23/01/2011 21:42

Lovely name, very elegant.

2old4thislark · 23/01/2011 21:43

I work with children and met an Edie yesterday - my first one! I like it because I had an Aunt Edie. As there's a trend for 'old lady names' I think it perfectly fine. I also don't think it'll get overused. Funnily enough I don't meet many Ava's and I thought that would be become very popular. Like that name too - wish I'd been a bit more adventurous!

2old4thislark · 23/01/2011 21:45

Yeah I noticed that too thecoffeelady and aprilmeadow Grin

COCKadoodledooo · 23/01/2011 21:54

I would have loved an Edith (sadly I don't think either of my sons would have been impressed with the name Wink).

thecoffeelady · 23/01/2011 21:54

busted! [grins]

thecoffeelady · 23/01/2011 21:55

should be Grin

AnnOnimous · 23/01/2011 23:05

I love Edie much more than I love Edith, I would be tempted to use it as the full name, or Edwina as the full name.

GrumbleBee · 23/01/2011 23:31

Love it love it love it!

Love Edith as name and Edie as nickname. I like it as a classic / old lady name but it also makes me think of Anglo-Saxon queens.

hester · 23/01/2011 23:34

I love Edith/Edie. I have one in the family.

SundayToast · 23/01/2011 23:39

My DD is Edie. Never met another Smile

Firawla · 24/01/2011 15:48

I think its nice, can see it becoming popular as it seems similar in feel to Matilda and other "old lady" names that have become popular but ive not come across one yet

jellybeans · 24/01/2011 16:26

I am not keen, sorry. Find it abit old ladyish.
