Edith nn Edie?

We're really after an unusual name and not one that will explode in popularity like Matilda and Martha did.

Is Edith nn Edie safe from this? And do you like it?

I like it. Edith is glamorous. Edie is sweet. Works well I think.

Rhubarbgarden · 24/01/2011 17:48

I think Edith is really lovely. Not so keen on Edie though to be honest. I do think it's becoming popular though, unfortunately.

I had twin great-aunts Edie and Elsie. I think my mother never quite forgave her parents for naming her after the latter rather than Edith.

I LOVE it!! Nice to see that other people do too - thought I was alone on this one Grin

Although it's not massively popular now, I don't think it's a safe choice at all if you want to avoid future popularity! It's a beautiful name but as others have mentioned it fits in very well with the 'old lady chic' crowd. Edith, Lois and Marian will be ruling the nursery within a decade.

Love it. We might go for it for DC1 if she's a girl (just under 2 weeks until we find out). It's DH's grandmother's name but we also really love it. At the moment though we're going for Isobel with Edith as a middle name. But that might change!

So anyway, I say go for it! It's gorgeous. It might rise in popularity but it won't make the top 10 or anything, I'm sure.

If you have an Edith, where do you live? I quite like the name Edith, but not sure if it's popular in my area or not.

How do you pronounce Edie - Eddie or Eedie?

minipie · 24/05/2011 10:05

I like Edie, not so keen on Edith (bit too old lady for me). What about Eden?

Ooopsadaisy · 24/05/2011 10:10

My Grandma was Edith and known as Edie.

Conjours up memories of strong, hard-working woman with a loving smile and the best home-made chips ever.

nappyaddict · 24/05/2011 10:58

Eedie :)

rachel234 · 24/05/2011 16:26

Edie is cute for a little girl in English (esp pronounced Eedie), but I don't think it will travel well into other languages where people wouldn't pronounce the E as ee. But that may of course not bother you Smile.

nearlymumofone · 24/05/2011 20:10

i love it. was on my shortlist when i had ds- like yourself I was concerned it might become popular though.... but that could be the case with any name. it is pretty.

Tortoiseonthehalfshell · 25/05/2011 02:45

Edith Clare is my DD's name, and we call her Edie. I've met a couple of other Edies of a similar age (she's 2) but they're all just Edie, not Edith. I do like that the name and the nickname have such different connotations, so she's Edie at the moment but she may or may not grow into Edith later.

What were you thinking for second name? Our other option was Edith Isobel, which I still think would be lovely but Edith has a soft sound to it, to me, so we wanted a crisp sort of second name.
