When you had names prepared for your first baby, did you go on and use those names for your second baby? For example, if your first was a boy and then you had a girl, did you give the girl the names you already had shortlisted for the first child?

Just wondered how many people change their minds!

yes

Eglu · 22/01/2011 12:26

We only had one boys name for DS1, so there was no other option for DS2.

The girls names changed considerably though.

Now pg with DC3 and we are revisiting the girls names from DS1 and DS2, as well as adding in some totally new ones.

SlightlyTubbyHali · 22/01/2011 12:26

No, changed my mind. Partly because in the interim friends used my shortlisted names, partly because other names seemed nicer when it came to DD2.

4andnotout · 22/01/2011 12:27

We changed our lists each time.

Tobagostreet · 22/01/2011 12:29

OK, so DS1 was given the name I most liked as a first name plus my 2nd best boys name as a middle name... 22 months later a wee surprise in the form of DS2 came along and I'd used both 'good' names. Confused

After much deliberation, DS2 was given DS1's middle name as his first name.

Weird I know, But at least I have 2 names I love. Grin

JiltedJohnsJulie · 22/01/2011 12:38

No we didn't and I think if we have a DC3 we would choose a different list again.

MentalFloss · 22/01/2011 12:54

No we didn't.

When we were choosing for DD1 it was either going to be Elizabeth or Jessica. We went for Elizabeth because we thought it was more classic.

My DH loved Jessica so it came up again for DD2 but there were just so many that we knew that we decided to go for something different - Juliet.

wigglesrock · 22/01/2011 12:54

This is really interesting, I have 2 dds and am due a third baby next month. When I found out I was pregnant with this baby we looked at our boys names, and although I still like our boys choice for dd1 I felt it had been hanging around for 5 years and it was almost 3rd choice by now. We don't know if this baby is boy or girl but went back to drawing board and picked 2 "new" names, although they're popular but I'm not precious about that Grin The original boys name was Leo btw.

DanJARMouse · 22/01/2011 12:57

No, we had new lists each time!

DD1 was supposed to be Callum for a boy, and Caitlin for a girl - we went with Jessica in the end!

DD2 was shortlisted as Abigail or Rebecca and Matthew for a boy - she got Rebecca.

DS (we found out the sex at 22 weeks) and the original choices were Daniel or Emma - he was Daniel!

Jojay · 22/01/2011 13:01

My friend and I were talking about this the other day.

Her daughter is called Matilda, nn Tilly.

The boys name they had chosen was William but they won't used that second time around because he was to have the nn Billy - Tilly and Billy is a bit much!

Sariska · 22/01/2011 13:05

Basically, yes. We had to think hard for a name for DC1. We knew we were expecting a boy so we focussed on boy's names but we also came up with a girl's name we really liked. When we found out DC2 was a girl, it was a no brainer. We failed to come up with a boy's name in case the scan was wrong.

No idea what we'd do for a DC3!

Tolalola · 22/01/2011 13:13

We're starting again for DC2, rather than digging out the old lists which we've lost.

Hatterbox · 22/01/2011 13:27

When our DS was born, the girl's name we had selected was Tabitha, and that got put on our list for next time.

However, by the time we had our twin DDs, Tabitha had become far too popular for our liking, so it came off the list.

Now I'm having number 4 (due September), the boys names we had selected when I was pregnant with our DDs will be in contention, as neither have become popular over the last 2.5 years!

Meglet · 22/01/2011 13:31

Yes, DD was called the name we would have called DS had he been a girl.

Both the names were pretty much top of the list within a couple of weeks of getting pregnant with DS. Apart from a few dappy ideas from me and XP coming up with footballer names we didn't really change our minds.

No, DD2's name wasn't even short listed for DD1.
The boy name stayed the same and won't be use...

whysolate · 22/01/2011 15:20

We had a different list for each of them. Although, 6 months after DC3 was born we changed his name. We decided we didn't like what we had chosen. I cringe when I see it on hospital appointments and such, so I may change it (officially) by deed poll soon.

Firawla · 22/01/2011 20:20

new lists each time

sweetkitty · 22/01/2011 20:26

No new lists everytime as well. It would hAve felt wrong to give DD2 DD1s reject name.

Clary · 22/01/2011 20:26

Ah interesting!

DS1 was going to be Ella; but DD isn't. Then DD would have been George - but again DS2 has another name!

In every case we had a name we loved, which was the name we needed; and then a name we couldn't quite decide on and made a last-minute choice for - I was in full-on labour before we decided about DS2's "girl" name! - and that was the name we never needed.

Spooky eh!

FWIW DD's middle name is Ella and DS2's is George. For some reason we just didn't like those names as much 2 yrs later. Ella is very popular here so I am pleased about that.

I think if my mythical, never to be born DD2 existed tho she would have the name we didn't give to DS2... Sad

Mssoul · 22/01/2011 20:27

Named my girls after they were born Grin

mamatomany · 22/01/2011 20:40

DD1 was my mums name for my brother had he been a girl and DD3 has the name DD2 would have been called had she been blonde. We know of a dark haired version of DD3 and i just don't think it works as well.

othersideofchannel · 22/01/2011 21:09

We chose names after the 20 week scan once we knew what we'd have. So, no.

SilkStalkings · 22/01/2011 22:04

Nope, couldn't do it, was like I'd said goodbye to that little boy who didn't exist, felt odd to use it again.
Only ever had 3 boys' names DH & I agreed on so used the other two! God help us if we ever had another.

CrispyTheCrisp · 22/01/2011 22:06

We had the same boy's name which we would have used if DC2 had been a boy. However we didn't consider or use DD1's 'reject' name for DD2
