Friend wants to name her DD Loralei, and has asked my opinion on it (she wants a proper opinion...this could make or break it! :o)

I really do like it but all I can think is Gilmore Girls...BUT I got the complete boxset for xmas and have been watching them ALOT!

So don't know if thats just me having watched to much, or a general consensus

Any thoughts? and if you do think "Gilmore girls" does it matter?! It's not a hugely popular show is it?

She loves it, but I can't decide what to say :o

Not sure really, sounds nice to say but a bit too unusual for me, can imagine the child forever having to spell their name.

Pepa · 20/01/2011 01:13

I love this name, I know the gilmore connection, but seriously who's going to remember that show in 10 years (or even 5!)

The spelling issue is a pain but I'm constantly spelling DD2's name even though its written exactly as it sounds Confused

MilkNoSugarPlease · 20/01/2011 01:21

Thank you both,

I understand the spelling issue but I think that comes up a fair bit whatever your name is, twice in the last two weeks I've been asked to spell my name....it's Emma Hmm :o

I think I do love it! Even without the Gilmore connection! Good point about no one remembering it in 5y other then me :o

To me it's the Australian equivalent of Tracy and reminds me of Prisoner Cell Block H- but I'm probably the only person who remembers that! With those connotations removed, it is a pretty name.

HollyGoHeavily · 20/01/2011 07:02

It's lovely - i don't think the Gilmore Girls is a popular enough show for that connection to be a problem for her.

PlanetLizard · 20/01/2011 08:32

How do you pronounce it? I've only ever seen it written but not said.

Reminds me of the author Laurie Lee.

DastardlyandSmugly · 20/01/2011 08:46

Isn't Loralei the name of a character in Calamity Jane too?

DandyDan · 20/01/2011 11:34

The spelling should be "lorelei".
I know it from the German folk song.
I guess as a name it should be pronounced "lorraly" to sound okay with the emphasis on the first syllable, even though I would normally say "lorral-eye"

MilkNoSugarPlease · 20/01/2011 11:52

Aah! I knew the spelling looked wrong! Thnk you!

She wants it pronounced Lorral-eye

sophiesmummie · 20/01/2011 12:06

Sorry, meant to add that this is the real Lorelei - I've driven by too many times to dis-associate it from the rock. I also think it sounds awful in English.

SilkStalkings · 20/01/2011 17:18

I rather like the sinister mermaid connection (and the Calamity Jane one!) Def pronounced Laurel-eye.

mathanxiety · 20/01/2011 17:25

Laurel, Lara and Leilani are also nice. I like Lorelei although it's old fashioned in Germany.

AmazingBouncingFerret · 20/01/2011 17:28

Ohhh I love it. I was addicted to the show when pregnant with DS. Fancy watching some episodes now but my boxset is in storage. Grrr.

duchesse · 20/01/2011 17:32

I thought Gilmore Girls straight away, but only because we're obsessed with it (have all the series on dvd Blush). I do like it but wouldn't choose it myself.

GetOrfMoiLand · 20/01/2011 17:32

It sounds like an obscure type of lichen found on rocks in Somoa.

I have never heard of the Gilmore Girls either.

NoMoreChocBiscuits · 20/01/2011 17:33

I instantly thought Gilmore Girls, but that's because they are my secret guilty mid-afternoon secret. So read this as I like it Grin

Envy at your box set BTW

duchesse · 20/01/2011 17:35

psst! On ebay there is an Ozzie dvd seller who does the GG box sets in region 2 format for £20. He packages them as gifts so there's no import duty to pay.

GetOrfMoiLand · 20/01/2011 17:35

Samoa

TrillianAstra · 20/01/2011 17:36

I was going to suggest that Lorelei is a better spelling :)

Don't know anything about Gilmore Girls. Sounds a bit Tolkien-ish (eleves and shit, you know).

duchesse · 20/01/2011 17:37

I think you'd like it Trillian. It's a very well-written cerebral american show.

TrillianAstra · 20/01/2011 17:39
PassionKiss · 20/01/2011 17:39

Now I want a Gilmore Girls boxset! It reminds me of when DD was tiny and I was chained to the sofa BF-ing, so much that I'd sometimes watch the same episode twice in a day!

I love the name too! Grin

overthemill · 20/01/2011 17:44

oh yes as long as she can shorten it to Rory!
Grin

TrillianAstra · 20/01/2011 17:44

Wouldn't you shorten to Lori?
