Wendy and Gladys

What do you think of Wendy. I am loving it, and it is currently top spot as a nn for our top name Gwendolen.
Do you think Wendy should be a nn, or a name it its own right?
I just love it!

Also pondering Gladys - it has been on our list for a while, but I am starting to love it more I think. It sounds so bright and cheery (obviously!). Trouble is two of my dc's (we have 4 dc's) are called Amos and Iris - is it too similar?

I need twins!

I think a tad dated for both of them - when I hear Gladys I see a blue rinse and a headscarf.Sorry.

Myrtle is up and coming with Tilly as a nn.

I also hate it when people suggest totally different names to the ones suggested. Guilty as charged.

Wendy is a made up name and I knew a horrid Wendy at school.

onimolap · 18/01/2011 21:14

Aside from Gwendolyn being the drippy one in Mallory Towers, I think it's a nice name. And Wendy would be fine as a nn - it strikes me as cute on a little girl, but not for a grown woman.

I don't like Gladys - makes me think of Dame Edna.

CupcakesHay · 18/01/2011 21:17

My nan's name was Gladys - but she HATED it - Sorry - think it's horrid. Gewendoline/Wendy are lovely though.

pointydug · 18/01/2011 21:23

awful

PlanetLizard · 18/01/2011 21:39

I quite like Gladys, and prefer it to Gwendolyn. Not keen on Wendy, would use Gwen or Wyn as nn for Gwendolyn.

spiderlight · 18/01/2011 21:51

I had a lovely lovely lovely great auntie called Gladys (who would be over a hundred today), but I just can't picture it suiting a baby or a child, sorry.

hulahula · 18/01/2011 22:43

hate them both. this must be a joke right?

slartybartfast · 18/01/2011 22:45

i know 2 wendys, neither of whom like their names really,
particualrly being called fwendy wendy.

tummytickler · 18/01/2011 22:54

hulahula - nope - not a joke. Not all the kids can be called Evie and Jack you know Grin .
Thanks for the opinions - would love some more!

I know a Gwen - very strong name. I like it. Gwendolyn seems watered down though.

Hmmm, Gladys. That one might be a grower maybe. Prefer Nerys or Carys.

What are your other DC called?

FunnysInTheGarden · 18/01/2011 23:04

No and No.

My middle name is Nerys! The object of much derision over the years, and now here it is on baby names, I am so fashionable!

tummytickler · 18/01/2011 23:04

Other dc are Iris, Eli (ELijah) Pearl and Amos.

Lovely names, but not Gladys and Wendy. At all.

ComeAlongPond · 18/01/2011 23:11

Don't like Gladys, I'm afraid.

But Gwendolyn is lovely and Wendy is a sweet nn.

I quite like Gwendolyn, but prefer Gwen as a nn.

Don't really like Gladys sorry, it reminds me of Gladys Kravitz, the interfering neighbour on Bewitched.

Rhubarbgarden · 18/01/2011 23:41

I love Gwendolyn. Less keen on Wendy. Gladys makes me think of Gladys Pugh in Hi-de-Hi, but I think it could be quite sweet on a little girl. It would certainly be different.

mathanxiety · 19/01/2011 00:04

Gladys and Wendy would raise a few eyebrows and not in a good way.
Gwen is a lot more hip as a nn for Gwendolyn.

Would you consider Gwyneth?

Eli, Amos, Pearl, Iris and

Chloe
Aster
Aven
Hazel
Willow
Zinnia
Saffron
Phoebe
Wren
Iola
Honor
Joy
Agatha
Dinah
Eve
Zoe

Had a lovely but very sad auntie called Wendy and a weird crotchety auntie called Gladys. But love Wendy, darling.

LaTristesse · 19/01/2011 08:51

Sorry, I don't like either name either! Whereas I love your other DCs names.... they sound very cool, while Wendy and Gladys sound more frumpy.

Wren from the list suggested above is lovely!

Hedwig3 · 19/01/2011 10:55

I like Wendy and would leave it as it is.

Pasiphae · 19/01/2011 12:30

I have a SIL Wendy, would be strange on a baby for me. But cute nickname for Gwendolen.

Gladys is lovely idea, but it's too geeky mixed with old lady for me.

SacharissaCripslock · 19/01/2011 12:34

My name is Wendy.

Grin

It's a horrible name. I completely hate it. Don't do it to your poor innocent baby.

I've only met 2 other Wendy's in my entire life and there's a reason for this - it's an awful name.

5DollarShake · 19/01/2011 12:51

Neither are at all to my taste - I suspect you are well ahead of the curve, TT. Grin

Gwendolyn is a good, strong name - I personally wouldn't spoilt it with Wendy (Gwenda, maybe?) and the less said about Gladys, the better. But you're definitely right on the 'not all children can be called Jack and Evie' point!

dundeemarmalade · 19/01/2011 12:57

my step-grandma rejoices in the name gwenhwyfar
