My name made the list! anyone fancy a guess?

5DollarShake · 19/01/2011 20:00

See, don't think Keith is any better or worse than the (I'm sorry, but really quite awful) Stanley or Harvey...! I honestly can't believe that people, faced with a list of all the names in the world, land on those. And if they can, then they can also land on Keith. [confuse] Grin

swanandduck · 20/01/2011 14:00

To be honest, I'm sure our parents' and grandparents' generations assumed that names like Elsie, Ruby and Edith were gone and buried for ever and are surprised to see them back in fashion.

It will be the same in forty years time, names like Jacqueline and Melanie and Lesley will be considered really quaint and pretty by that generation of new parents.

sparkleandspin · 20/01/2011 14:08

What confuses me is how people could have ever used names like Gary and Barry and thought they were nice. Were they once trendy and high up the charts?

pipKA · 20/01/2011 20:26

I like Nora and would have considered it for a future DD but it is too close to DS' name.

One of DS' middle names is Alan but he is named for 3 very important men in our lives who have all sadly passed away.

KenDoddsDadsDog · 20/01/2011 21:21

Gavin. But not sure it was ever popular

NewImprovedJollster · 21/01/2011 08:54

I quite like Gavin...

MackerelOfFact · 21/01/2011 09:26

I know a young Gavin, and have a little Ada (family name, but I love it). I also love Joy and June which I think are due a comeback.

I don't think we'll ever see the return of Shirley.

I totally agree that Archie, Alfie, Evie, Grace, etc will be seem hilariously naff and dated in about 25 years time. They'll be the Garys, Barrys, Deborahs and Julies of their day.

swanandduck · 21/01/2011 12:48

I also know a Gavin. And a Susan. both under 5.

DirtyMartini · 21/01/2011 12:52

Darren?

nightcat · 21/01/2011 13:03

Madge?

annasophia · 21/01/2011 13:13

ALL names are likely to become fashionable again. I agree that people will soon get bored of the Alfie/Evie/Lily/Achie cutesy type names that we'll be looking for stronger type names again.

What is wrong with Darren? Or even Shirley? It is just the associations in our heads. Our children won't have these when they name their children.

Remember reading a book about this. We tend to look for 'new' names and these are often names used by people a few generations ahead of us who are slowly dying out.

nightcat · 21/01/2011 13:27

what I find interesting is the ease with which Americans create names, can't think of any right now Blush, but when hearing I always think, how imaginative

I know a baby Boris and a 6 year old Eric.

As others have said, there is nothing intrinsically wrong with these names, it is more our associations. And yes, we will soon tire of the cutesy type names currently fashionable - Alfie, Archie, Charlie, Lily, Evie, Cutey etc. etc. And people may well look for stronger sounding names.

BellaMagnificat · 23/01/2011 18:27

Cutey?? Shock

Love Susan, Susie and Suzannah

BalloonSlayer · 23/01/2011 20:56

I don't think Jacqueline was ever really popular as a name in itself. It was "Jackie" that was fab and cool thanks to Mrs Kennedy, and I think it is lovely, and always have done.

BellaMagnificat · 24/01/2011 20:37

Doreen
