Now I'm pregnant, baby names has become a topic and my mum told me that if i was a boy i would have been called either Merlin, or worse, Oblio (?) from a pink floyd album?

I think I had a lucky escape! Blooming hippys!

Do you have any shockers you managed to escape?

If I had been a boy I would have been called Nathaniel or Rusell. I'm glad to be female.

devonsmummy · 14/01/2011 21:21

I was going to be Zulika but fortunately this changed to Victoria once I was born!!

NewImprovedJollster · 14/01/2011 21:27

Gemma, "sounds like a bleedin' detergent" said my dad

Gisela, suggested by my dad as an alternative, revealed to be an ex GF name...

Naomi, compromise suggestion, as wife of family friend.

Trebuchet · 14/01/2011 21:29

Mam wanted Dorinda...or Carmel after she saw a sticker on a bunch of bananas

FooffyShmoofer · 14/01/2011 21:35

Dads one and only suggestion was Brenda. It was strongly vetoed by Mum.

JessicaRabid · 14/01/2011 22:30

My dad wanted Esther, which would have been really out of place and 'old lady-ish' where I grew up but I think is quite pretty now!

gleechie · 14/01/2011 23:24

Peaches or Edwin Confused i was a Freya in the end. Which was an 'out there' name in the early 80's Grin

Buda · 14/01/2011 23:37

David

Then they were stuck as had no girl name. Someone in ward in hospital with my mother had a Fiona so that's what I became. Quite like it. None in school although funnily enough I know 3 others here. One married to a dh with same name as my dh.

icapturethecastle · 14/01/2011 23:49

My DH was nearly a Nigel - I told him we definitely wouldn't be married if he was a Nigel. My dad wanted Victoria but my mum won with her choice.

Nightstar that's why they went off Justin...that and the fact I wasn't a boy :o

FunnysInTheGarden · 15/01/2011 10:22

Amarylis or Geraint. Thank god I was neither. Abigail is much nicer.....

HelenaRose · 15/01/2011 10:45

I was going to be a Liam if I was a boy. I rather like it.

LittleDonkin · 16/01/2011 22:28

My mum wanted to call me Joanne but it was my dads "turn" to name so I got Michelle as in the "Michelle my Belle" song.
If I was a boy I would have been Michael

Threelittleducks · 16/01/2011 22:31

I WAS called after the local nightclub.

Hmm
2old4thislark · 16/01/2011 22:32

My mum wanted to call me Zenobia [shock} luckily my dad said no..........

She's barking mad and we don't really get on surprisingly.......

pipplin · 16/01/2011 22:40

I was going to be Hannah rather than my name now. I'm annoyed my parents didn't call me Hannah then I could be an Anna or Annie. I hate the variation of the name they gave me. I hate my nickname more. Ooh dear :(

MungBeans · 16/01/2011 22:42

My Mum wanted to call me Crystal. I quite like it!

Dreya · 16/01/2011 22:42

NewImprovedJollster Gisela is a beautiful name. I would have loved to have been named that. Giselle is currently my name for DD due in 2 weeks Smile My dad arrived at the hospital completely sozzled and declared my name ought to be Joy. It was for a couple of days. Then he sobered up and Mum got her way thank goodness. Joy really does not suit me at all! Stephanie was another favourite. Hmm I was born in 1976.

babybear1983 · 16/01/2011 22:47

I was going to be called Holly, thank god I wasn'y as my surname is now Hollis!

babybear1983 · 16/01/2011 22:47

**wasn't

purplepidjin · 16/01/2011 22:50

gleechie I was nearly Freya, but it doesn't go with my surname.

I was also nearly Portia, pronounced Porsche, but as my Dad's surname is the same as that of a very popular, low market, sadly defunct brand of British car it wasn't to be Hmm

One of my Dad's middle names is Kenneth, which is his Dad's name. It was revealed recently that he was, in fact, named for a previous boyfriend of my Gran's and not hsi father Shock

Remotew · 16/01/2011 22:54

Mum said I was nearly Juanita, actually prefer it to the boring name they gave me.

Beamur · 16/01/2011 23:02

LOL at Hugh Pugh.
My Mum was keen on the following names:
Crystal (snap Mungbeans) Jade, Coral and Gemma.
Luckily my Dad chose my name, it's not fancy but I so wouldn't have suited any of my Mums choices!

Darnsarfupnorf · 16/01/2011 23:09

I was going to be Noah if i was a boy....lovely, cute, fairly popular name now but at the time we lived on a boat Hmm
