Now I'm pregnant, baby names has become a topic and my mum told me that if i was a boy i would have been called either Merlin, or worse, Oblio (?) from a pink floyd album?

I think I had a lucky escape! Blooming hippys!

Do you have any shockers you managed to escape?

I was born in Singapore so my brother assumed I'd be Chinese and wanted me to be called Rosebud.

Starchild I believe.

Gabity · 14/01/2011 18:47

Winifred. After my Mum and her Mum and her Mum. Thank goodness my Dad saw sense!

CupcakesHay · 14/01/2011 18:48

Oooh - some great names there - mitsy, Fanny, Keith!

My mum wanted Arabella for me - and Dad put his foot down, then it was going to be Molly - but they decided on Hayley.

love Arabella- but soooooo not me - i'm too messy and always getting food on my top - Arabella's far too classy for me Grin

sungirltan · 14/01/2011 18:48

amy. or laurence neil if i was a boy.

i'd prefer amy.

audley · 14/01/2011 18:48

Dad's choice was Winifred Patricia after my grandmothers, fortunately they compromised.

CharlotteBronteSaurus · 14/01/2011 18:54

was nearly victoria
if i had been a boy i would have been sam

i would have got off lightly compared to my sisters, who would have been lumbered with kevin and tyrone.

Nightstar · 14/01/2011 19:15

Nah, I still dont think any of you have managed to trump a shocker like Oblio!

Except maybe Starchild and Fennoula! They are kind of wierd!

Was nearly Rebecca
And would have been Christian for a boy.

NorbertDentressangle · 14/01/2011 19:46

I was very nearly a Morag.

DancingThroughLife · 14/01/2011 19:50

I was always going to be what my name is. Mom and Dad didn't even pick out boys names (the days before gender scans).

My brother however, was almost going to be a Kevin, but wasn't. If he'd have been a girl he was going to be Grace, which put with our surname sounds like Grey Shoes. Luckily he was a boy and has a normal name.

darleneconnor · 14/01/2011 20:08

I could have been Graham-yuck!

My Dad was nearly Laurence after Laurence of arabia.

mathanxiety · 14/01/2011 20:18

No matter what, I would have had Mary as a middle name, so definitely dodged a bullet there.

smashingtime · 14/01/2011 20:32

Hermione - hmmmm

My sister was very nearly Flora but the advent of margarine in the 70's put a stop to that!

bluebump · 14/01/2011 20:33

I was nearly a Martha but my dad didn't like it. I would have been a Ben if I was a boy. I don't mind either of those but quite like my real name too.

NannyState · 14/01/2011 20:34

Angharad was the other name my mum (and mainly, dad) liked for me. We aren't even Welsh. Angharad. FFS.

Deaddei · 14/01/2011 20:35

Doris, after my nana.
Thank god my mum stuck to her guns.
Db was almost Hugh....our surname was Pugh.

MrsChemist · 14/01/2011 20:36

I was nearly Rachael, but my birth mother was called that, so it was veto'ed in the end.

BikeRunSki · 14/01/2011 20:37

Ignatius Clovis if I was a boy.

Truly.

melodyangel · 14/01/2011 20:42

I wanted to call my DS's Oblio!

Didn't just in case my brother wanted to use it. Now DS1 wants to use it for his kids, although hopefully that won't be for a few millennia yet!

It was the name of the boy in the Nilsson album 'The Point' which we grew up listening to as kids. Sorry OP but I love it!

If my grandmother had chosen, I would have been Charlotte. Which isn't particularly unusual nowadays, but I'm 49, and it would have been quite unusual in my era. Having said that I don't like my actual name (Heather). If I had been a boy I would have been Richard which is ok.

BikeRunSki · 14/01/2011 20:48

The gods were shining on me the day they gave me girl chromosomes.

Horton · 14/01/2011 21:07

Andrew or Chantal. My name is nothing like either of these.
