. . . does anyone else find it odd that the same, relatively few names, are always in the top 10??
Why are Oliver and Jack, Olivia and Sophie so goddam popular do you think? I mean they are nice enough but consistant Top 10?
I find it really odd there isn't much more variation in this area

I don't really find it odd, as I think those names are relatively inoffensive, simple & go with most surnames.

I guess todays more unusual names will be in the top 10 in 30-40 years time, as when I was at primary school almost 40 years ago there were no Olivers, Jacks or Sophies. They would have been considered very old fashioned :)

Names are very much influenced by fashion and a lot of us (some more than others) follow trends and choose similar names. Once we've all named our children the same names, we get tired of them and they start to feel dated - just like fashion.

Personally I agree with the OP, there are thousands of gorgeous names out there. Have a look at the ONS list of ALL names used last year - there are so many lovely names to choose from.

The whole point of naming someone/something is to identify them as uniquely as possible, not exactly achieved if many of us share the same name .

And I don't agree that a name like Jack goes with most surnames - it would sound awful with our short surname.

Ha ha! well Jack Black hasn't done too badly out of his name..although not a choice I would consider, I have to agree

I think it's all very well wanting to be 'unique' however you would have to be pretty damned unique to set your child apart from everyone else, and at what cost? ok..so we have the Peaches & Pixies of this world, but in celeb land they fit ok. Not for us 'commoners' though. If a couple down the road decide to name their child Pixie Appleblossom it would soon be thought of as 'chavvy' or be met with some other derogatory term.

I just think that picking a name you like is far more important than striving for something 'unique' only to be disappointed when another one joins the class. If you like the name, use it :)

My first name isn't that unique but is still quite unusual. It's never been in the top 50 let alone top ten, and I'm 43. I have never liked it, mainly because I have to spell it all the blinkin' time..lol

Yep, there are some lovely ones there (although Romeo & Cruz are a bit suspect..lol). Plus, some aren't actually unusual in themselves...but the spellings are.

I take your point. However when I named my daughter Evie 15 years ago I think it was outside the top 100. Not sure I even saw it on a list, to be honest..now, every other little girl appears to be called Evie and I am hearing people going on about how overused it is.

Yes, I know that there aren't any others in her class at school..in fact I think there is only one other in her year..but names will go in and out of popularity and the more unique names may well come and bite you on the ass one day

Which is why I say, don't worry about popularity so much. I am often perplexed as to why some people want to be so individual they can often set themselves up for disappointment later on. JMO :)

There are just an awful lot of people in this country who have very little imagination, and very little confidence to pick something different, or even look into the possibility of there being names outside the top 10.

It's the same reason B&Q sells ridiculous amounts of magnolia paint. People just don't have the courage to stray from the safe option.

I think wanting children to be "unique" is actually quite a modern concept, and still one that doesn't appeal to everyone. If you look at your family tree a few generations back, it's usually the same names over and over again (in England - John, Mary etc etc.)

I agree with Cuppa in that a lot of us just don't have the confidence/courage to look outside the top 100 and be a little different.

I did raise a few eyebrows with a couple of my choices, and they weren't even close to some 'out there' names I have come across!

Some people are influenced by fashion, some by celebs..and some just like the name even though it's been #1 for the past 5 years.

I remember being quite surprised when my sister named her daughter Chloe. I thought 'oh dear, can't you find anything a little more unusual?' so there you are..I am just as guilty in that respect.

But once a child is named, it grows into that name and you don't really see it as anything other than just that childs name. I guess it must drive some teachers to distraction though

Blue You are so right. Everyone is so busy striving for the name that no-one else has. And yet they miss what is right under their nose. What could be more unique (and adorable!) right now than to meet a little boy called John or a little girl called Mary?

I wasn't trying to make any judgements on any particular names or parents choices - I just find it strange that there is such an overwhelming consensus at the top 10.
There is no such agreement on say, politics, music is as varied an area as you will ever find, comedy, art etc etc.
So why then the consensus on names?

Maybe because it's an important, permanent decision that you make on behalf of somebody else.

If you buy a Cheeky Girls cd or vote for the Loony party once, nobody will remember 10 years later, and you can deny it if they do. Your child will have their name for the rest of their lives, and some parents get very scared about the responsibility and implications of that. And so choose the safe option.

I have a Sophie - she is the only one in her school. Must have named her just as popularity waned! But I spent approximately 2 minutes thinking of a name for her (after she was born). Didn't find out the sex at 20 week scan then spend 20 weeks overthinking it!

I'm deliberately looking for names which are consistently used but very unusual.

However I wouldn't want to name my child something with very odd implications, that might cause them huge problems in later life, that is a truly bizarre spelling or that is very of the moment.

Naming a child is a massive responsibility and frankly I'd rather be called Olivia than Peaches.

I agree, I never understand it to be honest. My children's names are all really unique - for me there are enough Jacks,Jessicas and Tobys and Olivias in the world thanks so I chose something really different.

There are loads of lovely underused names that are classic and not slebby like Peaches. Great list, by the way.

I agree that there are loads of unusual names to choose from. The most popular of my DCs has been top 20 but most of them are out of the top 50/100.

Some names though such as Zac have multiple spellings and if you add them all up it would be something like in the top 40. Even higher if you county Zachary and all it's variants as well. Same with other names of different spellings or shortenings (Isobelle, Lexi, Alex etc etc).

a lot of people dont research which names are up and coming they just go with what they like so not choosing a popular name deliberatly.
I wouldnt want a popular name however when I named my daughter Daisy 12 years ago I'd never met one but uber popular now

Until MN I just assumed people named their babies by choosing a name they liked.

I chose names for mine that weren't particularly popular but have risen in popularity since, so I would have been scuppered if I had chosen just to be different.

I do get a bit irked at the idea that I lack confidence or courage because I have given my child a name that may be shared by several others. I chose beautiful names that I have always loved. Far more foolish of me to choose something else just to be unique.

Of course we should choose a name we love and that goes well with our surname. But as the whole point of naming someone/something is to IDENTIFY someone/something, it makes sense to avoid a name that is already used by thousands others (as I imagine Jack must be as it has been the number 1 most popular name for many years...).

Also life is much more interesting and easier (certainly being a teacher ) when everyone has their own name - it can get rather confusing if lots of kids share the same first name (and same initial).
