Gil for a boy, short for.....?

Hi,
DH and I both like Gil for a boy, we haven't agreed on many so needing to pursue this thought. Is there anything else it could be short for other than Gilbert or Gillan, neither of which I am particularly keen on? ANy bright ideas?

As in Gill, definitely! DH is insistent that should have a full name aswell and I think I agree with that. I like Giles alot, good name for a grown up, not sure DH will go with it though, he likes Gilbert, in fact he likes any old fashioned names as far as I can tell so is delighted to be making progress wtih me on this one! In fact if it weren't a girls name I would think Gillian is great - with a hard G sound.

Gilbert might work better with Gil then.

I prefer the name Giles though - classic underused name.

I tried googling Gil Scott-Heron. I'm not sure about him but his dad, another Gil, was abbreviated from Giles.

Wow - thanks for that link - there is so much stuff out there! Yes, may steer clear of Gilette! All of them a bit weird, maybe Gilbert isn't so bad..... will have to mention Giles and see the reaction.

MMMM Gilbert is actually growing on me, never thought it would. Gilby is quite cute for a home nickname too. Maybe its a Gilbert after all! Think my Mum would be horrified but there we go!

I think Giles will be confusing and un-natural as a full name as the 'i'sounds are different in both.

Good reactions to Gil. Only slight problem is surname begins with Lo.....guess its not the end of the world. other potential is Finn short for Phineas.

I love Gilbert probably because of 'Anne of Green Gables'.

I was going to call my child Gilbert and then someone pointed out that in London Gilbert is what you call the wad of spit on the floor. Since then i seem to hear it everywhere - common people doing a 'Big green Gilbert' in the street.

It made me feel sick and i'm very glad now that someone told me.
