My DH and myself love the name Carter for a boy. It doesn't have many hits online, but one I read was someone saying it sounded like a pets name.

What do you think?

Good name?

I think of Mopsy, Flopsy, Oscar, Felix as pet names, not Carter.

Sounds a little surnamey to me but if you like it and if it goes well with your surname, why not.

Ineedsomesleep · 29/11/2010 13:47

To American sounding for me and it just makes me think of this

ShoppingDays · 29/11/2010 14:18

Too surnamey for me.

PaigeTurner · 29/11/2010 16:19

I like surnames as first names but I think Carter is my least favourite. Very hard-sounding.

BelligerentGhoul · 29/11/2010 16:21

Oh dear, nope - don't like it at all sorry.

And it makes me think of Carter The Unstoppable Sex Machine - great name for a band but not for a child!

cece · 29/11/2010 16:23

Carter the unstoppable sex machine for me too!

ProfYaffle · 29/11/2010 16:25

I love it Grin We would've used it if we had a boy.

Psammead · 29/11/2010 16:46

Not a pets name. Not quite my cup of tea either, but not terrible.

thereisalightanditnevergoesout · 29/11/2010 17:48

Carter the Unstoppable Sex Machine for me too, I'm afraid, but definitely not a pet's name.

FairyArmadillo · 29/11/2010 18:18

I've never met a pet named Carter.

PGWomble · 29/11/2010 19:05

Another one for unstoppable sex machine, or a surname (I know two unrelated Carter families). Pet- no, wouldn't make that connection.

flopsy1974 · 29/11/2010 19:16

Too much like a surname I'm afraid.

tammy234 · 29/11/2010 22:02

I don't know any pets names Carter either. Neither have I heard of the unstoppable sex machine Confused...

fozzy26 · 29/11/2010 22:06

I know a Carter and he is nick named Carter the Farter! In a most affectionate way though
:o

typsical · 29/11/2010 22:35

I like it. But when I suggested it in the past for DS, most people were Hmm. I think it's a case of being brave and going for it if you really like it...

MelinaM · 29/11/2010 23:27

Woof, woof! ..sorry I couldn't resist replying to you pet name QGrin
Immediately thought of MIchael Caine -Get Carter, I quite like it! x

AphraBen · 30/11/2010 01:38

I like it. I can't imagine a pet called Carter. But I can imagine a pet called Chelsea or Alfie Grin

PenguinNZ · 30/11/2010 08:27

A friend named his son Carter John after the Get Carter charcter and I've liked it ever since. Yes, it is surnamely, but so are loads of names now. Makes me think of this chap too, which is very pleasant. Grin

choccyp1g · 30/11/2010 08:33

Anyone else remember Carter Brandon? There was an Uncle Mort in the show? Anyone???

But I like it, along with Miller, Hunter, Fletcher, Mason. etc. All surnames that are jobs, somehow they seem more masculine than the usual boy's names.

Doesn't work for girls though... Maid, Washerwoman, Cook, Cleaner anyone?

abr1de · 30/11/2010 08:35

Sounds American.

Do you want your son to grow up with a manual labourer's job as a first name? ;)

PenguinNZ · 30/11/2010 08:36

I mean surname-y. Although that's not really a word either Blush.

ShoppingDays · 30/11/2010 09:30

Interesting point choccyp1g!

BerryLellow · 30/11/2010 09:36

Another one that instantly thinks 'Unstoppable sex machine', so for that reason I'm out. If you like it, use it.

:)

MajesticScallop · 30/11/2010 13:16

The only person called Carter I have ever met was a woman.

thefurryone · 30/11/2010 15:50

Clicked on this post to mention the unstoppable sex machine, good to see I'm not the only one.

Although in fairness it's unlikely that any of your child's peer group is going to have heard of them, so any teasing regarding this name would probably be at the hands of slightly drunken family friends at BBQs when they are a teenager.
