My friend's little sister has this name and I think that her pronunciation is beautiful, but think that most people would pronounce it differently.

How would you pronounce it?

Like another poster, I know 2 ladies who spell their names Alicia.
One is pronounced Alissia and one Aleesha.
I had only known Alissia for many years so was vair confused when I met Aleesha who spelt it same way - just because o was used to the other pronunciation!

I am spanish, and we pronounce it A-li-thi-a

i south america A-li-si-a

SoMuchToBits · 30/03/2012 22:09

I would say A-liss-ya or A-lees-ya. But I do have a cousin with this name who says is A-leesh-a.

But then I would also say Mar-sya and Fe-lees-ya not Mar-sha and Fe-leesh-a

I take the point about -cia having a -sh sound in words like social etc. But in the case of names I am inclined to follow any associated (no -sh there!) names, eg

Alice > Alicia
Felicity > Felicia

DoubleGlazing · 30/03/2012 22:51

I think the "sh" sound is a lazier way of pronouncing it.

Hulababy · 30/03/2012 22:55

A-l-i-s-y-ah or A-l-ee-sh-a

Ruba59 · 21/08/2012 18:33

We had a girl in my class in the 1960's called Alicia and it was pronounced Al-ee-sha the same as you would pronounce the -cia in Patricia or politician. It is quite an old name and my granddaughter is Alicia and gets quite upset when it is pronounced Al-iss-ee-a.

Ruba59 · 21/08/2012 18:36

And my Mum was Patricia and it was never pronounced Patri-ss-ee-ah.

PurplePidjin · 21/08/2012 18:50

I know an Alicia from Poland, and it's pronounced Ah-leet-zee-a

lottiegarbanzo · 21/08/2012 18:53

A-liss-ee-a. I think Aleesha is a more recent, probably American, quite different, name.

EdithWeston · 21/08/2012 18:56

A-liss-ee-a

amothersplaceisinthewrong · 21/08/2012 18:58

A lees ee a

almapudden · 21/08/2012 19:04

Ah-liss-ee-ah.

The 'Aleesha' pronunciation (and spelling) is a bit, you know, common.

LadyKooKoo · 22/08/2012 11:43

Always reminds me of the character in Enid Blyton's Mallory Towers books, in which case it would be Al-ee-sha.

Sabriel · 22/08/2012 16:43

I would say it Aleesha (from Little House on the Prairie). But my colleague has a DD with the name and calls her A - LISS - i - a.

CremeEggThief · 22/08/2012 16:52

Another vote for Al-iss-ia.

thisisyesterday · 22/08/2012 17:01

A-liss-ee-a

Lannie33 · 24/08/2012 02:20

Al-EE-sha. Not a fan.

yellowstarfish · 06/04/2019 10:12

e-li-shia
(first two syllables of 'elephant', followed by 'sheer')

redwoodmazza · 06/04/2019 10:19

Ah lee shah

mothertobe789 · 06/04/2019 10:21

My daughter is called Alyssa...pronounced ah-liss-ah, I thought the pronunciation was fairly obvious but it must not be as she gets a-lee-sha, a-liza, Elise lol!! Not what you were asking I know but it's a similar name.
