How would you pronounce Alicia?

My friend's little sister has this name and I think that her pronunciation is beautiful, but think that most people would pronounce it differently.

How would you pronounce it?

I would pronounce how the child and her parents pronounced it. I think Alissia, Aleessia and Aleesha are all common enough pronounciations for nobody to be thrown by one or the other.

I have two Agneses in my class, one pronounced Anyess, the other Agnes, nobody is thrown by this and both girls are always called by their correct pronunciations by friends and teachers, so I really don't think it's anything to be concerned about, just tell people how you pronounce it.

JenaiMarrHePlaysGuitar · 21/11/2010 11:31

But you wouldn't pronounce Felicia, "Felissya" (unless you're referring to the car), or Phoenicia "Fenissia", would you?

qumquat's right though, I'm sure different pronunciations don't cause much trouble at all. I wouldn't not choose a name because of it.

lolabells · 21/11/2010 14:35

My DN is Alyssia pronounced al-ih-see-ah but my friends sister is Alicia pronounced the same way.

As far as I know no one pronounces my friends sisters name wrong but NOONE can get my DN name right. I'd have thought it would be the other way round.

edam · 21/11/2010 14:41

Alissia is the 'correct' pronunciation but people are obviously free to decide how to pronounce their child's name (and the child is free to make their own decision once they are old enough to have an opinion).

Other people are of course free to have an opinion on whether the parents were being daft, insisting that little Destiny is pronounced Shakira...

emptyshell · 21/11/2010 17:31

I would Ali-See-Ya off my own bat... however these days - I'd just ask, same as I do with Aaron etc.

LiquoriceLila · 21/11/2010 19:47

Aleesha

Molecule · 29/03/2012 22:28

my DD's name is Alicia pronounced 'Alissia', and almost every teacher etc. she meets pronounces it either Al-ee-shah, or Al-ee-sia. I have never understood why people think it would be pronounced Al-ee-shah (surely that would be spelt Alisha?) Confused

bronze · 29/03/2012 22:34

Aleesha ish
Except silvers one who I always assumed her parents have beer heard it pronounced.

It goes with marcia-marsha felicia-faleesha etc

bronze · 29/03/2012 22:38

Bloody autocorrect insert correct words

KateShmate · 29/03/2012 22:43

I would pronounce it A-leece-ee-a
Only because it is a friends name - Spanish pronounce it 'A-leeth-ee-a', and h friends parents are spanish so I presume it came from that.

I agree that 'A-leesh-a' should be spelt 'Alesha'

One of my DD's has a friend called 'Elysia' which I think is nice

bronze · 29/03/2012 22:46

Alesha would be said a-lesh-a though

DoubleGlazing · 29/03/2012 22:53

Al-ISS-ee-uh

Greythorne · 29/03/2012 23:12

A-lee-sia

kickmewhenimdown · 29/03/2012 23:17

Ah-leesh-a

DustyDen · 30/03/2012 01:15

But you wouldn't pronounce Felicia, "Felissya" [...] would you?

Oh, I would. I just assumed that was how it was said.

HolyLentenPromiseBatman · 30/03/2012 02:22

Molecule 'I have never understood why people think it would be pronounced Al-ee-shah (surely that would be spelt Alisha?)'

because in English 'cia' often makes the sound 'shhh' e.g. optician, appreciate, crucial, social etc. etc. I think 'cia' says 'shhh' as much as, if not more than, it says 'see-uh'.

I would say 'Al-ee-sha' because I've only ever known one and that was how she pronounced it. Also it makes me think of Alicia Florrick on The Good Wife (I love that show) and she also pronounces it Al-ee-sha. I think Alicia Keys is an Al-ee-sha as well.

SoFarWeAreEqual · 30/03/2012 08:53

I would pronounce it Aleesha.

I knew a girl called Alicia who called herself Lisa as no-one could ever pronounce her name properly.

I don't like it all, sorry.

NewHouse · 30/03/2012 09:06

I agree there is a posh non posh way of pronounciation of Alicia, I prefer the

Alicia with a iiiii sssss in the middle and no hhh or eee.

cookiesnap · 30/03/2012 09:09

I know a Spanish one who is A-lee-thea (which I love). Currently reading Malory Towers with dd so I say A-lee-see-a for that character.

RitaMorgan · 30/03/2012 09:16

Isn't it an English/American difference?

Americans tend to say Aleesha/Marsha
English tend to say Ali-cee-a, Mar-cee-a

NewHouse · 30/03/2012 09:17

Rita, Alicia Silverstine has no shia in her name Confused

FondleWithCare · 30/03/2012 11:27

A-Lee-sha but I have known an a-liss-ee-a too. I prefer it pronounced a-Lee-sha.

RitaMorgan · 30/03/2012 17:51

I think Alicia Silverstone's parents are British though. Most Americans would pronounce it like Alicia Keys.

PercyFilth · 30/03/2012 18:04

A-liss-ya

Aphria · 30/03/2012 19:18

A-lee-sha.
