How would you pronounce Alicia?

My friend's little sister has this name and I think that her pronunciation is beautiful, but think that most people would pronounce it differently.

How would you pronounce it?

Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

When I used to read the name in my Malory Towers books it was always Al-ee-shee-a in my head.

Lusi · 20/11/2010 21:51

My DD is Alicia - I pronounce it A- li-see-ah - and call her Lissy for short...
(Couldn't decide on a name - was going to call her Lily then at the last minute registering her decided on Alice (my grandmother's name) but she didn't look like one ...so made it a bit more exotic...) Then afterwards realised that it is a bit close to DD1's middle name -Alissa (for same reason)- and also that's how Aleesha(!)Keys spells her name...

People do pronounce it in a variety of ways - doesn't worry me - as long as it isn't rude people can call me or my DDs anything...Smile
I think my pronunciation is phonically correct (nearly every dyslexic child I have come across has an odd name eg Louis...can't help with learning to read...)

LadyInPink · 20/11/2010 21:59

notyetamummy did i miss it - did we get to hear how your friends sister pronounces her name?

I know a spanish girl whose name is Al-lee-thea and it is spelt the same way as Alicia.

When i read the Malory Towers books my mum pronounced it Alice-cea and so that always sticks in my mind too!

CrankyTwanky · 20/11/2010 22:19

Al-ee-see-ya.

seeker · 20/11/2010 22:22

There is only one way to pronounce this name. Alissia. Or possibly Aleesia.

NOT Aleesha.

Rach109 · 20/11/2010 23:13

Alissia

don't like the name Aleesha

Rach109 · 20/11/2010 23:14

ah Malory Towers! loved those books and loved the name from then too !

SpotSplatterSplash · 20/11/2010 23:15

I know of 5 wome with this name here (Ireland) all are pronounced Al-ee-sha.

I was a bit disappointed as I had always imagined it was pronounced the other way (Al -iss -ia).

SoMuchToBits · 20/11/2010 23:19

I would say A liss ia or possibly A lees ia. But having said that I have a relative with this name who says it A leesh a.

Notyetamummy · 20/11/2010 23:48

LadyInPink my friend's sister pronounces it A-liss-ia and her nn in Lissy.

I really love that name and nn, but think the pronunciation would cause problems - although Alicia (my friend's sister) says that noone's ever called her Alisha.

Really sorry, guys, but this is another posh/not posh thing.

Serviette/napkin
Toilet/loo
Lounge/living room
Aleesha/Alissia

OsbegaEthewulf · 21/11/2010 06:57

'Tis Al-iss-eea and no arguing about it this is how it should be pronounced; do not like Aleesha one bit!

PadmeHum · 21/11/2010 07:12

Aleesha

BrandyButterPie · 21/11/2010 08:21

Seeker- I have no idea which of your options is posh or not posh. Confused

SpotSplatterSplash · 21/11/2010 09:08

I think it is just personal preference or locality.

Spoken pronunciation

Wiki pronunciation

Background

So basically whichever you want to use. I'm sure it won't be a problem either way.

Only one I know is about 35 and most definitely Al-leeeshy-a. She's pretty posh too (proper posh, not bourgeoise), fwiw.
