Right, I give in, I need help!

We're having no problem choosing boys names for imminent no 2, but for some reason we're really struggling with girls names. We have a short list -

Alice (DH says no, because of that stupid who the fuck is Alice song Hmm )
Dorothy
Penelope
Elizabeth

and while we like them all, there isn't one that is definitely the right name, which was the case for DD1.

We quite like literary references so that would be nice, but not essential.

Any more suggestions gratefully received in case the right name is out there, just not popped into our heads yet!

Oh ignore that silly song! Go with Alice! If not, others that spring to mind are:

Elsa
Eliza
Doris
Iris
Martha
Melissa
Virginia
Clara

smother · 04/11/2010 21:36

p.s. what's DD1's name?

PlonkerGuyOnTopOfTheBommy · 04/11/2010 21:39

Katherine
Florence
Annabel
Harriet
Lucy
Beatrice

reddaisy · 04/11/2010 21:42

Lydia - from Pride and Prejudice
Dora - I love, love, love this name but most RL people think I am crazy for liking it

cece · 04/11/2010 21:43

Audrey
Verity

WouldYouLikeMilkWithThat · 04/11/2010 21:44

DD1 is Charlotte. I like Clara, but not keen on same first initials so it's ruled out. I like Harriet too, but don't think it scans well with Charlotte i think it's the 'et' sound at the end.

That's helpful. What about

Rebecca
Josephine
Marianne

Have to say that I think Elizabeth would work really well too.

reddaisy · 04/11/2010 21:55

I think Charlotte and Alice go really well together. Badger your DH - that bloody song was ages ago.

cazzybabs · 04/11/2010 21:55

Verity - my new favourite name for dd5 (which will never ever happen :( ) or Grace or Isabelle

Vine · 04/11/2010 21:55

Dorothy is awful.

Marianne
Miriam
Sarah
Thea
Violet
Helen
Hannah

reddaisy · 04/11/2010 21:59

Ooh I second Isabelle if Alice is a no go. Or Sophie. As Charlotte and Sophie go together in my opinion. Both classy.

WouldYouLikeMilkWithThat · 04/11/2010 22:14

Isabelle/Isobel is out, as I have a thing about names with too many different spellings.

Hannah, Sophie, Helen, Rebecca are out as we have close friends or relatives with those names, like them all though.

Violet is out, for the same reason as Harriet.

I like Verity, not sure what DH will think of it.

Marianne I dislike, I have person association with it that is not good!

Alice is my favourite, but DH is not for shifting.

Penelope is lovely. Dorothy is my mother's middle name and she hates it so much she hardly ever admits to it! There are a lot of Alice's around but it's a lovely name. Elizabeth is a very good name: so many abbreviations - Libby, Beth being two of the nicest. I'd probably go for Elizabeth and use Beth as nn, or Penelope. (How do you feel about Penny and Pen?) What about Rachel?

TondelayoSchwarzkopf · 04/11/2010 22:31

If those are your favourite names (all gorgeous btw) you need to dig out some film stars from the 1920s to 1950s.

Irene
Rosalind
Nancy
Constance
Diana
Doris
Audrey
Katharine
Hedy
Jennifer
Lisabeth
Judy
Grace
Greta
Paulette

Abigail?

FrameyMcFrame · 04/11/2010 22:36

My DD is Alice and I love the name.
She likes her name a lot too (she's 9 now)

Komondor · 04/11/2010 22:46

Penelope (Penny) and Elizabeth (Libby) are beautiful names. I'm afraid I don't like Dorothy (Dot / Wizard of Oz) at all.

Other suggestions:

Caroline (Carrie)
Catherine (Kitty)
Elinor
Charlotte (Lottie)
Lucy
Lydia
Georgiana (Georgie)
Frances
Isabella (Bella)
Louisa
Maria
Julia
Harriet
Augusta

Sorry for the nn suggestions, they are just my fave nn's for above names.

Komondor · 04/11/2010 22:50

Just read some of your other comments, sorry, so that rules out Isabella and Charlotte.

I love DD1's name.

I missed to include Alexandra (Lexi) and Philippa (Pippa) in my list.

HelenaRose · 04/11/2010 23:02

We have very similar taste in names, so here's my not-so-shortlist:

Sophie
Lucy
Elizabeth
Tess(a)
Alice
Eleanor (etc.)
Beatrice / Beatrix
Georgina
Felicity
Josie

mathanxiety · 04/11/2010 23:34

Rachel
Vanessa
Daphne
Antonia
Astrid
Lara
Letitia
Tamsin/ Thomasina

I love Alice, Amanda, Charlotte, Emilia and Francis out of Aglo-Saxon names.

I also love the following names of Greek/Russia origin and may or may not work for you:

Valentina, Elpida, Tamara, Daria, Karina, Constandina, Larissa, Xenia and Margarita.

Hedwig3 · 05/11/2010 12:03

I LOVE Dorothy and Penelope Smile

LisMcA · 05/11/2010 20:00

Alice is on my list along with Phoebe, Evie, Martha (ruled out because it rhymes with surname), Charlotte.

Think we are on the same wave length :o
