Hugo -I like, catching on here in a big way though
Charles -like, loads of them though
Marmaduk-erm, not really
Felix -don't like, cat food, but very popular here now
Caspar -quite like, ghost connection ok
Maximilian -like, not uncommon now though
Arthur -coming up the ratings fast
George -very very popular
Frederick -ditto
Edward -ditto
Magnus -love it

MadreInglese · 20/10/2010 11:30

I love Marmaduke, my best friend as a child was called Marmaduke

Mind you, he was a cat

ElsieMc · 20/10/2010 11:34

Where do you live? You would not survive those names here, believe me. Obviously you have thought this through and are confident.

Caspar - do not go there, honestly. Child locally mercilessly teased with this name. Think of your child.

Sorry to be negative.

RockBat · 20/10/2010 11:34

Hugo is a fantastic name, and if you're posh then you'll have no trouble pulling it off. All the others are meh with the exception of Edward (which I'm keeping for me Wink) and Marmaduke which is frightful no matter how posh you are :)

discobeaver · 20/10/2010 12:02

What about Peregrine? That's posh! Prefer Hugo though.

EvilAntsAndMiasmas · 20/10/2010 12:06

Charles, Arthur & Edward are really nice. I know one little Arthur and one grown up one and they are not "try hard" or posh at all - but as you are I don't suppose you mind anyway :)

Other posh type names, only some of which I like:

Montgomery/Montague (Monty)
Humphry
Victor
Cosmo
Jeremy
Henry
Nicos

discobeaver · 20/10/2010 12:18

Trouble with Monty, which I really like, is Monty Burns from the Simpsons. People will be rubbing their hadns and saying "excellent" all the time.

CharlieBoo · 20/10/2010 12:42

Theo
Harry
Henry

mathanxiety · 20/10/2010 14:52

Edmund
Conrad
Ivo
Hector
Julius
Algernon
Roland

minipie · 20/10/2010 15:04

Ok here are some others you might like:

Dominic
Toby (Tobin/Tobias)
Benedict
Fergus
Digby

BearBear1981 · 20/10/2010 16:06

some great names... Digby is amazing!! Fergus is a good one, but is it too Scottish for a non Scot family?

I'm not a huge fan of Algernon, few friends with that name, ditto Victor and Edmund. Peregrine is horrid!!! Quentin reminds me of that awful 90's Top Gear presenter Quentin Wilson.
Theo too overused by the Clapham brigade. Nicos too Greek. Julius- no, Ivo hmmm not sure, love Hector but know a few horses called Hector.
I knew a Monty once and he tragically died as a young boy so that's a no go.

Don't like Henry and Harry, they come into the same Clapham bracket as Theo, Oscar and Jack for me. Lovely names just not my thing. I never have and never will shop at Boden.

LadyInPink · 20/10/2010 16:16

If you want a name no one else in the class is likely to have don't go for Frederick as so many Freddies these days also George is quite popular too as is Edward.

Marmaduke is just being cruel imo but Maximillian is great though be strict on no abbrieviations as it will inevitably be shortened to Max which there are hundreds of.

Know a few Hugo's too and Charles tho Charlie is what they are all called.

Love Felix - only know one but he is a teenager now. Caspar and Magnus are great names too and def different.

You will know when he arrives, though if it turns out to be a she then you have a gorgeous name already picked - loved that name when I saw it on our OP!

EvilAntsAndMiasmas · 20/10/2010 16:18

No idea who the Clapham brigade are - do they put out fires?

Digby is a great name. Fergus is not too Scottish at all. Ivo is nice and I know a fairly posh one.

What about:

Alexander
Percival
Lancelot
Galahad (is this getting silly yet? I do know a Lancelot though)
Ptolemy (i know a baby one)
Richard
Gerald
Timothy
Sebastian

Tortington · 20/10/2010 16:22

Hugo - every other boden wearer has a kid called hugo

Charles - charlie? ok
Marmaduke - are you SHITTING ME?
Felix - is a cat
Caspar - is a ghost
Maximilian - leave it at max ffs you over poncey git
Arthur - nice
George - fine
Frederick - fred - just fred
Edward - eddy.
Magnus - jesus

jesus h christ lady, unless you iz a relation to the queen and eat fois gras a nd champers on a regular basis whilst going to watch polo and stamping in the divits - then give it a rest love

EvilAntsAndMiasmas · 20/10/2010 16:25

If you want to stand out amongst your friends why not go for Jaden, Courtney, Cameron or Jack?

BearBear1981 · 20/10/2010 17:28

Clapham Brigade are the yummy mummies who have exhausted all the names I loved. I know lots of them and love them to bits! I hate Boden because all the stuff is the same every season and is totally overpriced and lacks imagination!

I love the name Courtney... thank you

Thank you for all your posts, but I shall now be removing this thread as some people can't understand tongue in cheek and feel the need to be unnecessarily aggressive. This was supposed to be fun! It's sad how these forums always turn nasty. Now I know why I rarely go on them, makes me lose faith in human nature.Sad

Oh don't worry about that BearBear! :)

BearBear1981 · 20/10/2010 18:33

thanks EvilAntsAntMiasmas. Just after a long day of being violently ill and stoked up on the strongest painkillers I'm allowed while pregnant and not hospitalised, the last thing I can be bothered to deal with is someone hijacking my thread with aggressive pathetic abuse.

I don't want an overly 'posh' name but something that will stand him in good stead in the future if it is indeed a he. Choosing names is a tough one and no one likes being one of 10 in the class likewise I don't want to name my child after someone I don't admire. All names can be shortened, Marmaduke to Duke, Charles to Chucky or Charlie, James to Jim, the list goes on and on. But I want to give my child the very bloody best I can with everything including choosing him a name that he can be proud of and enjoy.

I have an unusual name, of which I'd never write on here, it's not particularly posh but in all the jobs I've worked whether a Saturday job in a clothes shop or in the more high profile job I do now, I've never been ashamed of it and I am very thankful my parents spent a lot of time considering my name.

If you only have rude and destructive things to add to this thread then please add to someone else's thread, not mine. Sisterhood, not bitchiness please! I don't want to have to remove the thread.

OP posts:
EvilAntsAndMiasmas · 20/10/2010 18:55

Don't remove it, it'll be fine.
So...Galahad? [hgrin]

BearBear1981 · 20/10/2010 19:09

defo!

But if I go for the knights of the round table option, then maybe Arthur is best!!

What are the most popular names out there for boys? When I had DD 1 last year the baby boys from my NCT group were Oscars, Charles's, Alexanders and Jacks. Hence I don't really want to use those...

Maybe it'll come out with outstretched hand, greeting the obstetrician "Pleased to meet you, I'm Marmaduke Duncan Alfred 'Smith' ". Arghhhhhh... Maybe I should have chosen a name while I wasn't such an emotional wreck on so many painkillers and when I was not bed bound with support stockings to accessorise my look!!!

And then there's the joy of announcing the name to the in laws and my own parents, they'll no doubt hate whatever we choose!! ha ha ha

I think I'll stick to Girl and Boy!!!

Actually, thought just came into my head... Zander?? or Xander?? Any good??

OP posts:
EvilAntsAndMiasmas · 20/10/2010 19:21

Arthur is a great name, Love Art or Arty as nicknames.

Sorry to hear you're so unwell, but at least it give you time to think

Parents can grin and bear it when the time comes for name announcing. Tell them now that it'll be something they'll REALLY hate e.g. Germolina or Tia Maria for a girl, Prince Haydn for a boy. Then the relief will be so extreme when they hear the actual name that they will be crying with joy... [hgrin]

Zander/Xander is nice - people on here will say you must have Alexander so he has a Choice. What about Xavier?

Vanillacandle · 20/10/2010 19:33

How about Benedict? If he doesn't like it, then he can be Ben, but always has the choice when he gets his knighthood.
I also particularly like Alexander (but then I'm biased!)
As for girls, Arabella is good, but I have a soft spot for Octavia too (although DH hates it - mind you, given that he likes Ursula I wouldn't take too much notice of his taste!) and Rowena.
I have to say that as someone who works in a school I would always advise against outlandish names as there'll always be some little bugger who will use any available ammunition to tease them.
Wishing you all the best for the section and a safe delivery!

mathanxiety · 20/10/2010 19:47

Patrick
David
Christopher
Anthony

cece · 20/10/2010 20:50

I work in a school..

Hugo - I love it and Hugh too. I know a few but not many iyswim. Never taught one myself.
Charles - nice but really don't like Charlie as they are 10 a penny aorund here
Marmaduke - tempting but need a big personality to pull it off I think
Felix - too much of a cats name
Caspar - in Devon we call wasps Jasper... so no for me
Maximilian - prefer just Max
Arthur - OK
George - nice but can be popular in places
Frederick - gaining in popularity
Edward - love it and was going to use it for DS2 but it didn't suit him. LOads of lovely nn to use too...
Magnus - could grow on me.

I also like

Rory
Gregory
Lance
Lisle/Lyle
Spencer
Jonathan
Mark
Guy

if you want something not too popular

(I chose an unusual name for DD - no one I knew had used it. In fact some people asked me if I had made it up. It is now quite popular and I know of at least 5!)

CharlieBoo · 20/10/2010 23:22

I loved your name choices and totally get where your coming from re the names you liked but are now overused.

I'd go for Charles/Charlie but I'm biased. Good luck and do let us know what you end up going for.
