Mary or Sally

Which do you prefer, Mary or Sally?
Which is more popular do you think?
I like how classic Mary is, but think Sally is cute and adorable on a child, but suits an adult too. Do not like Sarah (dh's ex!) so would just be Sally.

Is Mary becoming more popular do you think? (hope not)

BooBooImpaledOnBrokenGlass · 18/10/2010 19:05

Don't like Sally at all. It's a bit 'blah' as a name. No substance to it.

JustKeepSwimming · 18/10/2010 19:05

I hope Mary is not becoming popular too! Been my DD's name since i was pg with DS1, then DS2, now pg with DC3....

I like Sally :)

tummytickler · 18/10/2010 19:11

I have no idea if either is popular! That is why I asked! I have never met a child named either, know of one Sally through the grapevine, and there was a baby Mary at work many moons ago - but that is all.

I much prefer Mary (although I prefer Marie etc).

Sally sounds too much like Silly and I have to agree with Boo that it lacks substance.

I don't think either of them are very popular, I don't know any.

LetThereBeRock · 18/10/2010 19:26

Mary.

thereisalightanditnevergoesout · 18/10/2010 19:32

I like both equally - I can't choose between them (though I wouldn't have Mary as I have a Joseph! Though my FIL is Joseph and his sister is Mary... Hmm)

KenDoddsDadsZombieDogsNotDead · 18/10/2010 19:34

Love Mary
Sally is a bit goody goody!

inveteratenamechanger · 18/10/2010 19:37

Love Sally, but Mary is also good.

Have you thought about Sarah, if you like those sorts of names? It is my favourite classic name.

plonker · 18/10/2010 19:42

Love Mary, but only if you have the right accent (think 3 men and a baby/little lady).

Round these parts it would rhyme with furry (NW England) which doesn't sound nearly as nice, unfortunately.

Sally is lovely, but only as a nn for Sarah, actually I Sarah love much more than Sally - it's a shame you can't use that.

readywithwellies · 18/10/2010 20:53

Mary, although I would spell it the Welsh or Irish way

bythepowerofMN · 18/10/2010 20:53

I love Sally!

StephanieSays · 18/10/2010 20:54

Mary is lovely

Summerbird73 · 18/10/2010 20:56

I adore Mary - it is a name of choice for potential future DC - it is also my sisters middle name (she is 27)

Sally is a derivative of Sarah so DH's ex might cotton onto that

SpecialC · 18/10/2010 21:05

I prefer Mary!

In French, "Sally" (salie) means soiled... hope I haven't ruined it for you though!!!

Sally is lovely on a little girl but I think you should be wary about using it as it doesn't necessarily work so well in adulthood. I used to work with a great lady called Sally but the name did not suit her as she was 6 foot 4, in her 40's and a former national basketball player.

I prefer Maria to Mary, but think that Mary is a better choice to take someone into adulthood than Sally.

fedupofnamechanging · 18/10/2010 22:29

Mary, without a doubt. Sally is an insipid name.

mathanxiety · 18/10/2010 22:32

Mary is a very stylish name, imo.
Sally isn't half as nice as Sadie. I agree with the wet/ blah comments.

SoMuchToBats · 18/10/2010 22:36

Love Mary! Much more so than Sally. And I do know a 9 year old Mary.

Janoschi · 18/10/2010 23:51

Aw, I like Sally. I know a wonderful, funky woman called Sally and it suits her to a tee. Mary I view more of a goody-goody name because of Little House on the Prairie....

Greenwing · 19/10/2010 00:21

Mary is beautiful and classic.
Sally is too close to 'silly'!

chickentwizzler · 19/10/2010 09:27

Mary - love the name.

DinahRod · 19/10/2010 09:30

Mary is lovely

Sally, silly, sully, meh

YorkshireTeaDrinker · 19/10/2010 13:43

Love Mary - its my best mate's name! Also was a school with a Sally who was lovely, so both names have good associations. Of the two I'd go for Mary.
