Cassie/Cassandra

Notyetamummy · 12/10/2010 17:06

DH suggested this name yesterday.

I sort of like it but am not sure. I think I have negative associations due to a person that I used to know.

Is there another longer name, other than Cassandra that can be shortened to Cassie?

What does everyone think of Cassie/Cassandra?

Cassiopeia?

Jocasta?

Can't think of any more.

chickentwizzler · 12/10/2010 17:53

I dont like Cassandra but like Cassie.

I also like Connie, Carrie, Claris (perhaps full name Clarissa).

scurryfunge · 12/10/2010 17:57

Cassie is nice but not Cassandra (more likely to be shortened to Sandra).

minipie · 12/10/2010 18:06

Cassandra = person always foretelling doom so I wouldn't use it personally.

Cassie I quite like, but not sure what else it could be short for

Notyetamummy · 12/10/2010 18:17

Do you think it could be short for Cassia?

Is Cassia a name? I like the way that it sounds.

Ka - see - ya?

OP posts:
minipie · 12/10/2010 18:23

Don't see why not. After all Cassius is definitely a boy's name so Cassia = perfectly sensible female version.

Notyetamummy · 12/10/2010 18:25

Other names that I like but DH hates:

Florian nn Florrie
Persephone nn Sephy (per-seph-on-knee)
Aurelia (Or-reel-ee-ya)

Does anyone like any of these. I like names that are a little unusual but toned it down a bit but DH doesn't like any of my toned down names - he likes 'plain' names, so I've thought 'sod it' and am back to my more unusual ones.

What are peoples' thoughts?

Cassia, Florian, Persephone or Aurelia?

minipie · 12/10/2010 18:36

Florian is a boy's name I'm pretty sure.

Floriane or Florienne maybe but I'd think you'd made it up.

Persephone = cursed half-goddess who had to marry the king of the underworld and whose mother wept for her every winter. Not really a happy association...

Aurelia is quite nice. "Lia" for short. You might also like Aurora and Allegra?

Notyetamummy · 12/10/2010 18:44

You appear to be right about Florian being a boys name - I still like it as an idea for a girl though Hmm

I really LOVED the Persephone story when I was a child and the name seems to have stuck in my head.

Cassidy?

BunnyLeBOOwski · 12/10/2010 18:56

Cassidy is terrible.

I have a Cassie Smile. She's just Cassie. It's a fab name Smile.

Cassandra/Cassiopeia are just too poncey for us.

Sunlightdances · 12/10/2010 19:17

I'm a Cassandra always known as Cassie. Nobody's ever shortened it to Sandra... Mostly, people haven't heard of the Greek Myth or the fortune telling connotations.

I wear a name badge at work and am often complimented on having a lovely name. shrugs Just my two cents!

Lakota · 12/10/2010 19:18

Cassia is a name - I know one.

I love Cassandra and Cassie. I had them on my list but I was a bit put off by the Greek myth/foretelling doom connotations (even though I secretly think it was quite cool that she was always right and no one believed her).

I like the Persephone story too but I'm not sure I like it so much as a name. Sephy sounds pretty though.

Bagpusstree · 12/10/2010 19:55

I like Cassie as a name in itself. I know a lovely horse called Cassie though so couldn't put it on my shortlist!

Rockbird · 12/10/2010 20:05

I love Cassandra and when I raised it on here everyone said Only Fools and Horses. I don't care, I still love it.

BelligerentGhoul · 12/10/2010 20:07

Love it - Only Fools And Horses wouldn't enter my head at all.

Notyetamummy · 12/10/2010 20:12

In fact, I am a bit of a myth-lover, even of the 'darker' tales so that wouldn't ut me off Persephone or Cassandra.

Would anybody REALLY, when meeting a Persephone think - ooo she must be horrible as she shares the name of the queen of Hades?

mathanxiety · 12/10/2010 20:14

Kasia, Cassia? (Same basic name as Keziah)

I love Aurelia.

BelligerentGhoul · 12/10/2010 20:16

I like Ariadne and if I didn't hate spiders, I'd quite like Arachne too!

Notyetamummy · 12/10/2010 20:30

I can't beleive you've mentioned Ariadne BelligerentGhould! I've adored that name for years but every single person that I've mentioned it to says that it's horrible or "Like spiders."!

Ishouldhavechosenagoldfish · 12/10/2010 20:31

Cassia is biblical, cassia is some kind of tree (cinnamon?). I know an Aurelia, but her surname is a noun - it always sounds like Are-you-really-a, IYSWIM.

BelligerentGhoul · 12/10/2010 20:34

Ariadne is nothing to do with spiders! Wasn't she the one who helped Perseus? Arachne was the one made to weave, yes?
