Joseph or Jake???

Hi there,

Looking for baby names for my 2nd boy. My first boy is called Oliver which I love so want something that goes well with that. I like Joseph Benjamin and Jake Benjamin but can't decide - what do you think? Also what is a good nickname for Joseph should I decide to go with that as not too keen on Joe. Does Josie as a nn sound too girly? Would Joel be a better nn?

i'm having my 2nd boy and we've decided on Joseph too,i quite like joe / joey as a shortened version of the name.I'm still undecided on a middle name though

you dont pick the nick names - their peers do!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

i have a joseph, he is 21 and known as Joe.

sa a child, my special mum nick name for him was joby

Joseph. I love Joe and Joey.

You can;t use Josie, it's a girl name.

don't call the kid joey, joey is a colloqualism a not nice word used as an insult - its meaning is " you have mental health problems"

Thanks, yes I guess Joseph is a lovely name isn't it, I got a bit put off at one point as someone in the family made a comment about it being an old man's name - its amazing how people's perception of names are so different. So you don't think Jake is more striking??

Yes do you think Joel is a nice boys name then? what about Jos? (got these nn's from the baby book!). What would you go with Joel or Jos? Or does Jos sound a bit pretentious?

Yes Joey as in Joey Deacon - therefore everyone unfortunately associates it as negative thing back from the school days when kids would use it as an insult

Im so surprised everyone is going with Joseph and not Jake - as thought Jake was supposed to be a really cool name for a boy?

Really like Joseph and Joe is cool too.

As a teacher I have taught quite few but they have nearly all been lovely lads (unlike some other names I won't mention)!

sleepyhorse my first ds is called Charlie, what do you think Charlie and Joseph? I do like Jacob ,not to keen on Joel (the school geek was called joel at my school lol)

you can't 'choose' a nickname. You can decide how you will shorten a given name but you will have no chance of stopping schoolfriends picking something else.
In my DD's class for instance two boys have had their names shortened to nicknames by the class teacher to distinguish them from duplicates-she didn't check with their mothers first!

Another vote for Joseph. You could use my friend's DD's pronounciation of it as a nickname, Jovis ! ( I am joking).

pinkyp - oh my god Charlie is my favourite name!! (not just saying that). It was my first choice but for some reason hubby didn't want it (I was gutted!). And yes I think Charlie goes very well with Joseph. So have you got any middle names you like for Joseph?

Joseph definitely. Joe would be my choice of nn (not that it can really be chosen as snice says). Joe is great on a wee lad, a teenager and a grown man. Strong, masculine and non-pretentious.

Jake is beyond wet and meh.

Thank you :) I read somewhere (think it was on here) that Joseph was a good name to have with siblings that had certain names one of which was Charlie. I do think Charlie is an old mans name but i like that, (although its probabily more modern now) so i dont mind that joseph is seen as another 'old' name.
The ideas i have for middle names so far are:
Joseph Michael
Joseph William

I quite like Danny for a boys name too,my dh likes harrison, henry but i'm not too keen.
