Sonnet

Hi there,

We are due to have baby any day soon. Love the name Sonnet - just wondering what others thought? Taking a risk at being put off, I know, which probably isn't such a good idea at such a late stage.

We also need two other middle names (all other children have three names and so I want to do the same).

Other names we like to fit in around Sonnet are:

Aurora
Serenity
Willow
Indigo
Arizona
Luna
Blossom
Grace
Hope
Marie
Eve
Rain

Wondering what people think of the name Sonnet and whether anyone can help me think of two other names to go with it that sound nice - either from the above or other suggestions. Really appreciate everyone's help on here. Thank you.

My DD's middle name is Aurora so I love it.

My friends little girl is Sonnet. At first I was abit but, I now love it, and it suits her perfectly.

I prefer Linnet. Sonnet is ok, maybe a bit tth for my taste.

Serenity is a women's incontinence product. Arizona is a really cheap brand of clothing sold in JCPenney stores in the US. So they would be out for me.

Sonnet is not a name.

It is a word for a particular sort of poem. With 14 lines. An octave followed by a sestet

I do recall a children's pony book where the pony was called sonnet. That's okay. But if you want to call your son/daughter Sonnet, be prepared for people to think that your family is to be avoided.

Sonnet is beautiful. She might get a lot of "Shall I compare thee to a summer's day?" but some people always think they're funny.

I think a longer name with a shorter one works well, so perhaps split your list in two and try out a few combinations:

Loving Sonnet Willow think that might be a winner.

Sonnet is my baby cousin's middle name. At first I thought WTF? but now I really like it. Very pretty.

Names that are nice from your list are Willow, Grace and Eve. The others just sound like you are trying way too hard to be different (Apart from Marie).

Bizarre. Have you considered haiku or couplet. From your list, the only ones I think are remotely acceptable or nice are Grace and Eve.

Actually, I quite like Sonnet. Lovely to have a name a bit different from the norm and with such artistic associations.

I'd say give your girl a more "normal" middle name that she can opt to use if she doesn't grow up liking Sonnet. So Sonnet Grace or Sonnet Marie enable her to choose how she'd rather be known when she goes to uni/ becomes a world famous artist...whatever.

Very very hippy-ish, you will definitely get a lot of cat's bum faces if you use it (i'm pulling one now I'm afraid)

You could also just about get away with Aurora as it's hippy-ish without sounding quite as mad as Sonnet

I like Jennet more than Sonnet or Linnet

Serenity - no, will seem ludicrous when she is tantrumming in sainsbury's in 3 years time. What about Serena?

Indigo - no. Sounds like a boy's name to me.
Arizona - NO. Too king of the hill.

Grace - I like this one but you seem the type to want an unusual name?! What about Graciela?

Marie - Ok. Maria and Maribel and Marianne are all lovely. I like elegant and unusual names rahter than modern and bold names iyswim. Feel our tastes quite different.
Eve - lovely! Eve and Evie very popular though. What about Evelyn?

Sonnet is a lovely girls name. I know a 4 year old one.

Shouldn't we be encouraging more diversity in names, and be supportive of parents trying to choose less overused names?

Unlike William/Willy or other often used names, Sonnet has no negative connotations that I can see. And a lot of names are nouns (e.g. Summer, Will, Willow, Daisy etc) so I don't see a problem there.

I personally find Sonnet a million times more beautful and interesting than Eve and Grace, partly because the latter two are so, so widely used already.

Linnet = Limpet in my head.

Big blue bump, i'm with you. It is a name with meaning and with positive associations- pretty refreshing on this site!

I've not heard it before, but like the sound of Sonnet. Find it feminine and beautiful sounding.

Agree with Bigbluebump that we should be supporting the use of less common names - makes life much more fun and interesting .

I love all your suggestions and am going to spend later reading them through more carefully. Just wanted to say thank you. Actually, we were 100% certain about Sonnet so I am fine with the criticism - that's what this great forum is here for. And I can't expect everyone to have the same taste as me.

Actually, Quattrocento, you not liking it makes me think that perhaps Beauden is a goer. Not meaning to be rude, you have been really helpful on my other thread (and made me laugh out loud last night). But it just shows me we have very differnt tastes so perhaps I should just go with it.

I think Sonnet is quite pretty actually.

I'm surprised at some poster's narrow mindedness and rudeness (e.g. "be prepared for people to think that your family is to be avoided."). Do people really feel that way just because someone has a name that is less common? Really, honestly? What values are you teaching your children?

Sonnet would seem fairly normal around here. So would most of the other names on the list.

I like Indigo but it's been a bit tainted for me by the Indigo children stuff.

Willow is lovely in theory, but I'd worry about an unwillowly Willow spending her life living it down.

I think I shouldn't be laughing at some people's comments about my name choices (see my other thread on Beauden). But somehow, I am finding the posts quite funny. I think I have developed a thick skin since moving back from Canada and moving to the place we currently live (not very friendly - but that's another story). Thanks othersideofchannel and everyone else, I do love Sonnet and hope in a way we have a girl so we can use it. Even though we have two girls and a boy so it might be a bit uneven.

Sonnet's a bit hippyish, but has a pretty sound and is nice and unusual.

ANYTHING is better than beauden!

Also, remember we all have different tastes and values, so asking a bunch of strangers their opinion on anything (whether names, hairstyles, whatever) will always yield a range of answers. People who don't like your name choices may well have given their children names you don't like.

And if everyone loves your choice it is likely to be a very popular name that will by definition be very common and fall out of fashion at some point.
