We've really struggled to come up with a name we both like for DS2, due in 3 weeks. I want something arty, romantic, beautiful...DH wants him to not get beaten up at school Grin

DS1 is Joseph (Joe) which we both love. The surname is very English, long and sounds a bit posh (which we're not).

The following are all contenders, can't seem to narrow it down any further:

Patrick
Freddie (Frederick)
Seamus
Hamish
Gabriel
Vincent

Thanks!

We have a Joseph (Joe) as well, so I salute your excellent taste Grin Gabriel and Vincent were also on our list!

From your list I'd lose Freddie, Seamus and Hamish - the latter two because they really don't go with a long posh English surname (or with Joe), and the former just because I don't like it.

Patrick is a good name but I hate Pat.

nagoo · 20/09/2010 23:05

Freddie i think.

LittleCheesyPineappleOne · 20/09/2010 23:06

Out of your list I love love love Patrick. It also goes with Joseph really well.

Freddie & Gabriel - ok
Seamus and Hamish - like these
Vincent - not so keen, not sure why

hairymelons · 20/09/2010 23:11

What would you shorten Patrick to LCPO?

OP posts:
LittleCheesyPineappleOne · 20/09/2010 23:13

Probably Paddy I think.

seeker · 20/09/2010 23:13

I have a Patrick - it's the best boys name EVER!

He is usually Patrick - surprisingly not many people shorten it. He is Pat to his football coach and Patch at home. But usually just Patrick.

freddie

gabriel will be 'gay' at school

patrick, seamus and hamish are very culturally tied IMO and personally i would only use them if i had a cultural tie

vinny...um? nah

pixiestix · 20/09/2010 23:49

Frederick/ Freddie is my fave to go with Joe.

MsHighwater · 20/09/2010 23:58

Assuming that you consider all of them "arty, romantic and beautiful", I would suggest that Patrick best meets your dh's standard.

hairymelons · 21/09/2010 00:04

Custardo, that is exactly why DH doesn't like Gabriel. I've been showing him this thread, might have to stop that now.

And I should probably fess up a cultural/ family tie...my Dad is Irish (my first and last names are also unmistakeably Irish) and called Paddy. My uncle is Seamus. Everyone I talk to about names in RL knows this and so they always say we should go for either of those.

I don't like Vinny either but I love Vincent.

Patrick seems to be winning so far...

Thanks everyone :)

No, MsH, the really ponsy arty, romantic & beautiful ones got vetoed a long time ago! Except Gabriel which shouldn't be on there really as DH doesn't like it at all. I'm still hoping to change his mind though.

CheerfulYank · 21/09/2010 01:16

Patrick/Paddy or Seamus...love 'em! I always wanted an Uncle Seamus for some reason, amd Envy of yours! :)

nappyaddict · 21/09/2010 02:02

I like Frederick but think Freddie is too popular now. Not really sure what other shortenings you could go for though.

I love Gabriel but your DH probably doesn't? Patrick and Vincent are fantastic names and probably fit your DH's criteria more?

The others I know a few of which makes them less appealing to me.

BeccaandEvie · 21/09/2010 07:13

I like Gabriel and Freddie. Gabriel here gets shortened to Gabe which I really like as well. I think Joseph and Gabriel go well together also.

Patrick is nice and shortened to Patch is nice also.

HecateQueenOfWitches · 21/09/2010 07:16

I like Hamish.

Joseph and Hamish.

Sounds good. Grin

Also like the idea of Hamish 'Worthington-Smyth'

Ds2 has Gabriel as his middle name and says pleasedont give as first name he hates it only slightly less than Valentino which is his other middle name and is thankfully for small mercys that his first name is only slightly unusrual Antonio but he likes that

Ans yes he is half Italian and looks it hence the family names sorry son

He refuses to use either of his reckons end up as gay val

he reckons patrick best

SilveryMoon · 21/09/2010 07:49

I really like Patrick. I wanted to call ds2 patrick, but dp wasn't keen. I think it's a fab name.
seeker Patch is so cute!!!!!!

Rhubarbgarden · 21/09/2010 08:24

I like Seamus or Hamish.

emmyloo2 · 21/09/2010 10:01

Love love love Hamish. Also like Patrick. The others I am not that keen on....but Gabriel is not too bad.

thereisalightanditnevergoesout · 21/09/2010 10:29

hairymelons are you me? Is your DH mine?

We have a Joseph - and are expecting another DS end of Dec (already have 2 DDs - so much easier to name!).

Our Joseph's mn is Hamish (so don't think we could use that again) and we love Patrick (only there's one already in the family with same surname, so probably a no-no for us). Patch and Paddy are lovely nicknames (I'm going to get all wistful about the name Patrick again...)

I love all your names and would consider using any of them - maybe with the exception of Vincent - probably my least favourite from your list - though it's a fine name, I just prefer the others.

My (very traditional) DH isn't all that keen on Gabriel (I haven't asked him about your list - it was on mine).

LoisCommonDenominator · 21/09/2010 10:45

I like Vincent the best, but then I also like Vinnie, which I think is pretty inevitable. Oh dear but I don't like Vince at all, and that's also a very likely nickname. Depends how you feel about other people using the nickname you don't like (even Vincent himself).

Patrick is great too.

Frederick/Freddie is lovely, but its extreme popularity has taken the shine off it for me.

Not wild about the others but they are all fine names.

Oh and I love Joseph/Joe!

rachel234 · 21/09/2010 10:48

I love Vincent. Hamish is also lovely.

The rest I'm not keen on.

MackerelOfFact · 21/09/2010 11:21

Vincent and Patrick I like. The others are a bit wishy-washy to me but none are awful. Seamus could grow on me actually.

KittyTwoShoes · 21/09/2010 11:25

Patrick is one of my favourite boys names, I love it.
