Names you KNOW are perfectly nice but which you have an irrational hatred for

I'll go first-

Anne/Anna
Nancy

I don't know why I feel such a strong dislike for them! Perfectly nice normal names logically but for me.......no. To say the least.

Apologies to any parents of Annas or Nancys, I know I am the freakish one for feeling this way!

Figured everyone would have at least one name like this?

I can't stand the name Jessica and I have no idea why. Every Jessica I have met has been lovely!

letsblowthistacostand · 16/09/2010 13:32

Well, DD2's first and middle are on here and DD1's middle and a variation of her first so here are mine:

Mia (why? it doesn't even sound like a name to me)
Poppy
Freya
Shannon, Sharon, Melissa - all names from my childhood

Kai (again, why?)
Timothy
Peter
Aaron
George

LetThereBeRock · 16/09/2010 14:18

I'm not convinced that all of these are perfectly nice names, and I'm probably going to piss off half of MN,but I'll share my list anyway.

I really don't understand the popularity of Clementine and Tabitha. They're reguarly mentioned on here. I think they're horrid.

Others I strongly dislike are...

Stanley
Elliot
Ernest
Ava
Archie
Alfie
Paul
Steven
Frank/Frankie(It's such an ugly sound imho)
Ethel
Prudence
Ursula
Phineas/Finnegan/Finn
Beryl
Pearl
Ruby
Abby(Abigail is fine but not Abby)
Amos
Betty
Digby/Diggory
Hector
Monty
Iris(I immediately get a visual image of a giant eye on legs)
Larry
Minnie
Malachi
Margaret/Maggie
Demi anything
Anything Lee
Harvey
McKenzie(Awful doesn't begin to cover it)
Luna
Bernard
Ralph(Unless pronounced as Rafe)
Cedric
Walter

There are names out there that I do like. I promise.Grin

arsesandoldlace · 17/09/2010 15:31

Tegan
Sarah

Helen

MamaLazarou · 17/09/2010 15:59

Maisie. I don't know why. It's just so silly and whimsical. It sounds like something you'd call a pet hamster.

I also dislike double-barrelled names such as Ellie-Mae, Evie-Grace, Abby-Rose, etc.

JillyCoopersJoyousOtter · 17/09/2010 16:03

Dislike anything like -

Alfie, Archie, Charlie etc.

Have a particular hatred of the name Jayden. I can barely bring myself to say it, and its very popular around here.

Girls names I dislike are

Ellie, Katie, Freya or Paige. Not sure why, they are nice names but wind me up for some reason. Confused

NormanNorris · 17/09/2010 16:10

I agree with Alfie, Charlie, Archie etc

I also dislike Maisie, Daisy, Poppy etc - especially when double barrelled Maisie-Mae, Daisy-Mae, Lily-Mae etc

TheCrackFox · 17/09/2010 16:18

Not keen on Amy, not sure why though.

MamaLazarou · 17/09/2010 16:23

No-one would actually call their child Maisie-Mae, surely?

sweetkitty · 17/09/2010 16:35

Anything hyphenated I'm the owner if two very popular 70s names spliced together. People mispronounce it and shorten it all the time.

Too popular names like Emma Evie Ellie

Boys names with a K

Anything with a different spelling it's not big or clever.

2 out of my 4 DCs names are on here too

sittinghippo · 17/09/2010 17:13

Anything that sounds shortened.

Betsy - should be Elizabeth,
Alfie - Alfred
Archie - Archibald
Harry -(Harold?)
Freddie - Frederick
Ellie - Eleanor
Katy - Katherine
Lizzie
Charlie

Even if they are names in their own right I think they 'sound' shortened and dont particularly like the full versions either. Strangely full version then shortened as a nn is fine.

Ooh I just noticed they all end with ee sound.

smoggii · 19/09/2010 18:30

Chuffed to buttons that neither my baby's planned first or middle name have been mentioned!

There are some lovely names that have been ruined by being attached to horrible people eg Helen, I've met about 10 Helen's only one is a decent human being!

Irrational dislike for Jen/Jennifer/Jenny - don't know why but I loved the name Genevieve for ages until DH asked if we would call her Jenny for short - something I hadn't contemplated for a second. Needless to say it's no longer a possibility.

My wants us to call our baby Tuesday - I can't understand why.

K names, probably all.

Madison
Toby, really really hate that name
Tristan,
Archie,
Sam
Zack
Courtney, Connor etc

piscesmoon · 19/09/2010 19:36

Ruby, Pearl, Paige, Kitty, Mia, Archie, Alfie, Dylan,Sidney

They are just off the top of my head-there are many more.

bulby · 19/09/2010 19:45

Isabel - I know it' s a nice name but I can't stand it..... That is the most ridiculous sentence I've ever written.
Phoebe-loved it until DH vetoed it forDD because it reminded him of foetus.

Rhubarbgarden · 19/09/2010 20:43

Chloe. Too close to 'cloying'. Aisling because it makes me think of ash trays, although strangely Ashley doesn't. Niamh though I couldn't tell you why. Charmaine - Chinese take aways.

Rhubarbgarden · 19/09/2010 20:46

Oh and for boys, Anthony pronounced with a soft th -sounds like a lisp and is just beyond awful.

cupcakebakerer · 19/09/2010 21:39

I agree with Skyrg on Grace. My husband loves it (and he has reason to as it was his Nana's name) but I can just remember a girl at school called Grace who was the farthest thing from graceful.

I also can't stand it when people try and give their children 'posh' names such as Reuben, Theodore, Gabriel and Hugo. But that's just me. The names I like have people snickering. I went through Posy phase the other day: not good.

coodles · 19/09/2010 21:40

Kayden
Jayden
Hayden
Mason
Wayne
Paige
Madison
Danielle
Chantelle...........

And at work once we had Tia Maria and Tennessee -awful

sophiesmummie · 19/09/2010 21:44

"I also can't stand it when people try and give their children 'posh' names such as Reuben, Theodore, Gabriel and Hugo"

But people don't 'try' to give their children posh names. They just choose names they love. Maybe they have 'posh' tastes Smile?
