Hello, me and DP are having trouble deciding on a name and have got to the stage where we're over-analysing each one on our shortlist for pros and cons. We've now lost all perspective and don't know what to think about any of them. Crazy!

Please could you help us out with your comments on our list and tell us which you would pick. Ta!

Girls
Beatrice
Thea
Jasmine

Boys
Albert
Frederick
Jasper
Casper
Benjamin

Thea and Benjamin are my favourites.

CuppaTeaJanice · 07/09/2010 08:34

Beatrice - classic but not overused
Thea - Doesn't have much 'character' as a name
Jasmine - pretty, but a bit sugary sweet and princessy

Boys
Albert - old man who doesn't take care of himself
Frederick - too long for practical use, like Freddie though
Jasper - wasp
Casper - ghost
Benjamin - the nicest of all the 'popular' boys names. Prefer Benji though.

DinahRod · 07/09/2010 08:36

Beatrice is so beautiful and my favourite out of your choices, possibly influenced by the best female character written by Shakespeare imo. Thea I like but only as a diminutive, Jasmine much less keen.

Love Albert and the nn Albie, Ben & Frederick also good. Caspar is a ghost Jasper is a twirly moustached villain

DandyDan · 07/09/2010 09:13

Beatrice - more unusual and with more possible diminutives.

Jasper - very cool in Twilight!

loler · 07/09/2010 09:43

Beatrice - love this name lots of good nn (ds goes to nursery with a Bertie, think that's cute)
Thea - lovely - works well at all ages
Jasmine - not sure. I know a frumpy 50 year old one and always think it's a strange name for someone like that to have)

Albert - can see why you like it but not my taste, can't get past the old man thing
Frederick - too posh for the area I live in, would get bullied at school
Jasper - love (only know one Jasper in his 60s and thought it was a fab name)
Casper - friendly ghost but not awful
Benjamin - a safe name, OK

Hope all goes well - I had a similar length list with ds2 and when he was born one of the names just jumped out. Hopefully that will happen to you.

Girls - all nice, I think Beatrice would be my favourite. Jasmine is lovely but makes me think of Aladdin, Thea sounds like it should be short for something.

Boys - I like Albert and Benjamin. Casper is a Friendly Ghost.

cyteen · 07/09/2010 09:47

Thea and Benjamin are lovely, but I do like Caspar as well. Bin the rest IMO.

mybootsaremuddy · 07/09/2010 09:52

Girls
Beatrice - Lovely
Thea - Like
Jasmine - Not keen

Boys
Albert - Like love nn Bertie or Albie
Frederick - not keen but do like Fred
Jasper - No
Casper - OK
Benjamin- Love this and love nn Benny.

MoMoMoM · 07/09/2010 11:38

I like Beatrice much more than your other girls names. Although I like Theodora which could be shortened to Thea. I agree with DinahRod that Thea is nice but only as a diminutive.

For boys I like all of them except Benjamin which is rather boring.

EleFunTess · 07/09/2010 11:38

Love Thea and Benjamin

Girls
Beatrice - quite like, esp nn Bea
Thea - like this a lot
Jasmine - my favourite of the three, I think it's really pretty - my only hesitation would be the nn Jas.

What about Saskia or Martha?

Boys
Albert - like this a lot, good nn potentital too
Frederick - like Fred, loads of Freddies around
Jasper - not to my taste at all
Casper - even less to my taste
Benjamin - you can't go wrong with this name! probably the best of the bunch.

Thea and Saskia go really well together - both lovely names!

frankenfanny · 07/09/2010 12:19

I like all your girls names, you would have to see what goes best with your surname, would fit well in your family/area, and what she looks like herself!

Boys favourites are Freddie and Ben ( but with their Sunday best full name on the birth certificate).

Quenbioz · 07/09/2010 12:24

Beatrice - like
Thea - a bit "try hard"
Jasmine - very pretty

Albert - old man
Frederick - like
Jasper - a bit posh
Casper - like
Benjamin - it's OK, a bit wet

oopsandbabycoconuts · 07/09/2010 12:29

It's just a phrase Imarriedafrog. I'm sure you know what it means.

Quenbioz · 07/09/2010 12:36

I suppose it's another way of saying it sounds a bit poncy/pretentious, but "try hard" was my effort at putting it a bit more politely Wink

yama · 07/09/2010 12:37

Thea and Benjamin I like a lot.

Not keen on any of the others.

Actually, I quite like Jasmine.
