How many little Januarys?

Hi,

The actress January Jones seems to be around a lot at the moment - I love the name, I was just wondering if anyone knew any others?

Also, do you think it's better or worse that my baby is due in January? More apt, for sure, but is it overly cheesey, and would I be condemning DD to a life of people saying 'Oh, were you born in Januray then'?!

Thanks :)

Yes you would.

And anyone who told name their name was January would get a rendition of "January, February".

Its a month, same as India is a country.

breatheslowly · 14/08/2010 12:19

I went to school with someone called January. I don't think it did her any favours.

KERALA1 · 14/08/2010 13:21

No offence but think you may be suffering from pregnancy brain - a condition that strikes mid pregnancy making you think that bonkers names are actually quite viable. I seriously considered Lorelei for a few months.

If you genuinely like it maybe stick it in as a middle name as they are essentially irrelevant so she can drop it if she gets embarrassed.

kiwidreamer · 14/08/2010 18:48

I can see that that the name January Jones sounds kind of pretty, in a way I cant quite put my finger on but honestly if I were you I'd put that name aside and try and find something else you like. January is not a great name IMO and its going to get shortened to Jan and then people will just thing her name is Janice and that's not particularly pretty so you have lost the source of your original appeal IYSWIM

Back to the drawing board in my humble opinion... what other names do you like?

January, sick and tired, you've been hanging on me
You make me sad with your eyes
You're telling me lies etc

would be on the internal jukebox permanently. Not good.

PfftTheMagicDragon · 14/08/2010 19:00

I think that it is one of those words that passes as a name - it's not too bad - like Tuesday, Autumn - there are a few "acceptable" ones

I wouldn't want Jan as a shorty tbh.

I think it works for January Jones because of the alliteration AND because she is an actress.

Lora69 · 14/08/2010 19:22

oh no. please dont.

my best friend is called June and she ABSOLUTELY CANT STAND people who ask 'oh, June- is that bcoz you were born in June??' AAAAAAARGH! Trust me, everybody she is introduced to, and I mean EVERYBODY asks her this question. She resents her mother for it x

ValiumSingleton · 14/08/2010 20:01

I like it. I don't see how it's any worse than Holly or April or Sunday!

In fact it's quite versatile because if she ever doesn't want to be January she could just be Jan.

I agree about alliteration. January Jones sounds cool. January Wilkinson, not so cool.

plonker · 14/08/2010 20:09

but January is such a depressing month ...

OK, so only one person so far who knew another January, thanks breatheslowly - and not a baby January, at that - that's good.

Lora69, thanks for that, yes, that is a concern.

Was only really curious about the prevalence and January birthday / people asking points so for people to leap in on the attack is a bit harsh, there's plenty of other threads to choose from where people invite you to slate their chosen name if that is your want?

SirBoobaLot, If someone told me their name was April and I immediately said 'May, June' I think that would make me pretty moronic, I can't imagine that would be a likely response.

KERALA1, I don't agree that pregnancy somehow makes me mental and renders any ideas I have or suggestions I make automatically null and void, if someone hit me with that little nugget at work I would be pretty outraged. And I don?t see anything wrong with Lorelei, why you think that's bonkers too I don't know.

VivianDarkBloom: "I'd need a contract to say she'll be a pale blonde beauty to carry it off." Grin If she looks like that I'd have to get a DNA test, but she'll have unusual heritage so will likely look quite striking - in a good way, I hope!

kiwidreamer , MrsvWoolf, PfftTheMagicDragon, good point about the shortening, tricky to think of any other nickname, I personally like Jani, but I don't think you can force these things and people would inevitably shorten to Jan which isn't great, as you rightly point out.

Thanks to all the other respondents :)

January Jones was named after January Wayne, a character from the Jacqueline Susann novel, Once is Not Enough. This January can't form a functional relationship with any man because she's fixated on her famous father. Enough to put you off? Hmm

NewbieT · 15/08/2010 11:32

Not a bit, AnnVeronica couldn't care less about literary associations, they're only a a figment of one person's imagination after all...

my mn is march.
honestly even as a mn ive always hated it,doesnt sound pretty and as i was born in december it led to a sickening realization during my early teens...

SirBoobAlot · 15/08/2010 12:11

Its a song Hmm So yes, it is a likely response.

If you don't want honest answers, don't post. That is "moronic".

Chunkamatic · 15/08/2010 14:31

Newbie whether or not you actually ask for peoples opinions on your name, if you post on the Baby Names section you have to be willing for it to take a bashing! People can't resist... don't take it personally. Both my DS's names got a right slagging off on here but I didn't let it put me off! Smile

BikeRunSki · 15/08/2010 14:45

Kerala I love Lorelei!

LetThereBeRock · 15/08/2010 14:50

It'd be a terrible name.

breatheslowly · 15/08/2010 15:38

Sorry Newbie, please don't misunderstand my original post - I did know someone called January, but I think that it was a pain in the arse for her. You may also find that if you are after a unique name, that many other people will have latched onto January Jones by next January and she will be in no way unique. Are you prepared to use December or February if your baby is early/late?

5inthebed · 15/08/2010 15:42

Never heard of January being used as a name, but I do know a 3 year old August. I think it' ok as a name as long as you're prepared to be askde "Was she born in Janaury".

CarmenSanDiego · 15/08/2010 15:44

I like your attitude, Newbie Grin

January's a great name but one of my dd's has a season name and gets asked if she was born in that season all the time. (She wasn't). She loves her name though :)

MrsJohnDeere · 15/08/2010 15:57

No strong views on the name itself, but I have friends called April and June who get really fed up with being asked if they were born in that month (they weren't).

ShadeofViolet · 15/08/2010 16:19

I know a June who was born in June.

I dont particually like January, its not a nice month - dreary, cold and dull.

ValiumSingleton · 15/08/2010 18:21

#Well, maybe people will remember her birthday!
