I like Prudence. Not quite so sure about using Prue as a nickname but can't think of any better alternatives (Prude/Prudy etc) It would be nice just to use the full name.

LaundryLyne · 08/08/2010 22:45

Prune Confused (still can't think of nicer alternative)

SirBoobAlot · 08/08/2010 22:49

I like Prudence. My only issue with Prue is the Charmed link - but then its a relatively old show now.

meadowlarks · 08/08/2010 22:50

Personally I don't like it because "Prude" gives me images of Petunia Dursley, but Prue is a pretty cool nickname.

How about Constance NN Connie?

LetThereBeRock · 08/08/2010 23:02

It's hideous.

ElephantsAndMiasmas · 09/08/2010 00:53

I think it's awful, I do know one (Pru for short) and I'm pretty sure she hates it too. Imagine, you could be a Rosie or an Esmerelda or a Madeleine, but no - you're Proooo.

Prudence itself is a boring idea, and it is now permanently associated with Gordon Brown which people will delight in reminding you of forever. And Pru not only sounds depressing but rhymes with poo.

Constance much nicer.

Evenstar · 09/08/2010 00:59

My mum is Prudence, always known as Prue and she really hated the name as a child, I think she has got used to it now. Her brothers used to call her Prunes and Custard as a little girl and make her cry Sad

ElephantsAndMiasmas · 09/08/2010 01:02

It is a cross between prunes (the cause) and poo (the effect).

Poor your mum evenstar, I hope she thought of something really nice for you.

Spidermama · 09/08/2010 01:07

Poo, prunes and prude I reckon. Sorry.

I also can't help but call to mind Alison Steadman's character in Nuts in May by Mike Leigh when she holds her teddy bear up to Keith and says, 'Kiss Pwoo-dence'. Not attractive.

Evenstar · 09/08/2010 01:13

She went to the opposite extreme and chose a name that was so common I was given a number in class as there were 3 of us! So I guess parents can't win really Smile Lovely traditional biblical name though with a nice middle name too and no obvious nicknames rude or otherwise, so not as bad as hers!

NiceCuppaT · 09/08/2010 07:50

Blimey elephants you think esmerelda is prettier!! It must be a bad name!! Esmerelda is just about the worst name I can think of!! The bells the bells!!!

I must add it's not my suggestion it's DH's!!

It's not my fave name, NiceCuppa, but it's about the opposite of Prudence, it's all witchy. Prudence is a sad Puritan girl in a brown dress with a centre parting.

No, it is a horrible name. Why give your child a name with such miserly connotations.

cumbria81 · 09/08/2010 11:45

Ugh

Pasiphae · 09/08/2010 12:09

Lovely name.
I don't like the meaning of the name, but I love the sound. To me, it's no worse than Constance.

Placketsleigh · 09/08/2010 12:21

What's wrong with a meaning of discretion, frugality and sound judgement?

I'd prefer that to a meaning of recklessness and hotheadness.

Prudence is about realism and does not mean over-cautious.

Placketsleigh · 09/08/2010 12:21

hotheadedness

Spacehoppa · 09/08/2010 12:31

There is always the Beatles song 'Dear Prudence' which is quite nice

BuntyPenfold · 09/08/2010 12:39

Prunella?

ElephantsAndMiasmas · 09/08/2010 13:08

Prunella is just as bad.

TBH I'd prefer Peaches or Clementine to that, while we're in the fruit section :)

Ibizadreams · 09/08/2010 13:26

It's ok. I prefer Perdita.

NiceCuppaT · 09/08/2010 13:39

spacehoppa that's where DH got the idea from!!!

Wigeon · 09/08/2010 13:40

Afraid it makes me think of Gordon Brown when he was Chancellor.

LynetteScavo · 09/08/2010 13:44

It's nice for a girl, with Prudi as a nn.

I don't like it used for a boy (there is once at DC's school)
