It's not a winner, I'm afraid.

Tis my mum's name. I hated it when I was a child - thought it ugly - but have got to quite like it now. She's always Prue. Her sister is Valerie. Lucky they didn't have another or she might have been Chastity.

ElephantsAndMiasmas · 09/08/2010 14:09

Chastity = bound to have the highest sex drive this side of russell brand

antoinettechigur · 09/08/2010 15:50

Please don't. I mean, would you like to be called Prudence/Pru?

frankenfanny · 09/08/2010 17:11

I like it- its even on my list. I went through all the previous threads (similar responses to above) and it still hasn't put me off. I have a name that is never given bad nicknames and it is boring as hell.

I think Prudence is a good grown up name and I think Prue and Purdie are fine as little girl nn. It makes a change from all the Emilys, Sophies and Chloes without being too "out there" in my opinion. And Agnes, Esme etc making a comeback actually make it fit in quite well with current trends. It is also probably one of the less obvious "virtue" names compared to say Honor or Chastity.

Who thinks of Gordon Brown first when they think of anything ?

ValiumSingleton · 09/08/2010 17:36

It's not the meaning I dislike, I quite like the meaning, it's the sound......

Wigeon · 09/08/2010 18:46

Frankenfanny - er, civil servants like me. It was his "catchphrase":

Gordon and Prudence

and again

and again

and again

and again

wigeon consider me educated, albeit far too late, on the subject of Gordon Brown Wink. I can see how that would have sickened you for the name.

My mum is Christine. She was taunted at school because of her name due to Christine Keeler. So a classic, innocuous name gets ruined due to politics. However, knowing teenagers as I do, I think that if Prudence were to rear its head as a political subject again, it is highly unlikely to form the subject of teasing unless it was the name of a politician's actual other woman.

Agree it is a name, especially with nn Prue, that would sound awful in some accents. But not mine. So I still like it Grin.

Wigeon · 09/08/2010 19:55

Grin frankenfanny.

Agree most school mates of the potential Prudence will not be chanting "Gordon Brown Gordon Brown" at little Prue!

Pasiphae · 10/08/2010 12:11

I was the one that said I don't like the meaning much.

I just find a bit meek, a bit too "goody two shoes". I would rather have something more daring in terms of meaning. Sorry.

I still like it though, especially because of the Beatles song.

I don't think many kids will make the link with Prudence and Gordon Brown. Teenagers might, but by the time your Prudence is a teenager, it will be all but forgotten...

Clowance · 10/08/2010 12:19

I have a sheep called Prudence- Prue for short Grin

I wouldn't use it for a child though.

chocolatefroggie · 10/08/2010 12:23

I grew up abroad and prudence was a brand of condoms Grin so definately a bad name IMHO!
