Aurelia Molly

We've chosen Aurelia if DC2 is a girl (due in just over a week!)

DH has first pick on the middle name as I chose DS1's name and both names for DC2.

The problem? He's really struggling to come up with a name. The only one he's suggested is Molly, in honour of his dear, departed Grandma.

I'm not keen on it at all, as I think it sounds very jerky with Aurelia but I didn't put my foot down as I do want him to have a chance to choose one of the names.

What do you think? Does it sound too bad to lumber the poor girl with or should I acquiesce?

He's not totally dead-set on it yet so I could probably steer him away from it without too much upset.

I think they're both nice but just don't work well together. Did his Grandma have a middle name that could work better?

No no no no no. Aurelia is veh posh. Molly is veh down to earth. They just do not sound right together.

Aurelia is a lovely name

Molly is a variant of Mary, so how about Aurelia Mary?

Agree with you all! But...

She was an amazing person who probably influenced DH and his ambitions far more than his parents did.

I can't decide whether the ill fit of the names together should out-weigh the lovely sentiment of DH honouring this fine old lady.

It does sound dreadful as a name I know but how often do names get said in full?

And thank you Elsie. May have to try for a dc3 just to use aurelia if this one is a boy!

He does like Mary actually. I'm not mad keen but it does sound better than Molly. Will suggest it - maybe it was her full name anyway.

Sirboobs - good idea re her minute. Will ask dh to find out. Will prob turn out to be Amelia or summat!

Update:

DH sounds keener on it than I thought... I suggested finding out if she had a long name such as Mary or a middle name which might work better instead and he got a bit huffy and said 'but that's not what I knew her as' (he used to call her Grandma Molly rather than just Grandma).

Was very useful having the term 'down to earth' up my sleeve though Twas the first time I've managed to talk about something like this regarding his family without inadvertently offending him. So thank you for that Bunny.

sirboobs 'minute' above was meant to read 'mn' or middlename. stupid blackberry

TBH I think Molly is much nicer as a first name than Aurelia.

I LOVE Aurelia and think Molly is just ok so there's no chance of swapping them round!

I have to admit when I saw the thread title, I did think they were a slightly odd combination!!

But I really like the sentiment behind it. If I were you, I'd bite the bullet and accept the name. You hardly ever use both names together anyway.

I think 5DollarShake may be right.

I think Molly Aurelia "goes" better than Aurelia Molly is what I should have put.

It also depends on your surname though.

How do all three names sound?

I don't think the surname helps. It's a three syllable double-barrelled number so something like:

Aurelia Molly Bank-Taylor

(That isn't the actual surname but is similar in letters and structure)

Well I think that´s fine tbh.

The only reason I mention is because often a middle name is said with surname also-that you perhaps less often say just given names together iyswim.

Have you checked out the grandmother's family tree? It may be there are other lovely names; perhaps your DH's great grandmonther for example.

Other than that, you could always change the Aurelia and have Molly as the middle name but with a name that goes more easily.

Molly was going to be our DS's name with Elizabeth as a middle name but he was a boy!

Aurelia is very formal soundning with Molly as a more playful, much less formal name but if you like it, then have it.

Aurelia Molly is fine. And it's lovely that your dh wants to honour his much loved Grandma.

ah yes, i see what you mean. You're right, it's probably only on birth announcements that both first names are used together but without the surname.

The surname probably dilutes the jerkiness a bit actually.

I think the sentiment outweighs any problems you may see, no one will say the two together, I almost didn't use my Gran's name as DDs 2nd middle name because I didn't 'like' the name, but felt I had to honour her as she'd just passed.

Do it, it's actually an interesting and unusual combination.

lucie - for DH it would have to be the name Molly itself otherwise it wouldn't represent her, ifyswim?

There's no chance on earth we'll drop Aurelia in favour of something that goes with Molly! Spent 8 months trying to agree on a girls name - can't go through that again! Plus as I've said above, I really love Aurelia so can't just discard it to make a middle name fit.

It sounds as though more of you think we should just go for Aurelia Molly and not worry about it not sounding brilliant together.

Go on, someone say it... after all this, it's going to be a boy isn't it?

Oh Aurelia is beautiful!

It does seem a bit of an odd combination but Molly is only going to be a middle name. If anyone comments you've got the excuse that it's a family name.

Actually, the more I keep saying it in my head, the more it goes.

Update: Just told DH that we should use it if it means a lot to him and that even though I didn't get the chance to really know her [before she died] I do feel grateful to her for inspiring him to become the man he is...

and he replied "Thank you. That's brought a tear to my eyes.'

So, I think that means it was the right decision!
