Sasha short for Alexander

We've just had a darling baby boy, whom we have named Alexander Francis Paul. We love his names and they suit him, but Alexander seems a bit much for an every day name for a baby. He also doesn't much look like an Alex at the moment, though he might one day.

We've been thinking of calling him Sasha for short, as the Russians do (my BIL is Russian), and it really suits him (plus being slightly glamorous in a baby-of-mystery way ) However, I've been wondering how many people in the UK think that Sasha is a girl's name.

Given that he will have the pick of multiple nicknames as well as his full name to choose from when he goes to school (so can avoid the teasing problem), can we get away with calling a baby boy Sasha?

It's lovely . Go for it!

My DH loves the name, for a boy as well as a girl, but shot himself in the foot because he named the (male) cat Sasha before our DD and DS came along! He thought people would think us quite mad naming our son after our cat!

Congratulations! I think it depends on where you live. Round here it would definitely be seen as a girls name. I like Xander.

Sasha would be lovely nickname for your Alexander, especially as your heritage is Russian.
