Sasha short for Alexander

We've just had a darling baby boy, whom we have named Alexander Francis Paul. We love his names and they suit him, but Alexander seems a bit much for an every day name for a baby. He also doesn't much look like an Alex at the moment, though he might one day.

We've been thinking of calling him Sasha for short, as the Russians do (my BIL is Russian), and it really suits him (plus being slightly glamorous in a baby-of-mystery way ) However, I've been wondering how many people in the UK think that Sasha is a girl's name.

Given that he will have the pick of multiple nicknames as well as his full name to choose from when he goes to school (so can avoid the teasing problem), can we get away with calling a baby boy Sasha?

My dd has a little friend at school called Sasha. He is from Ukraine and I think his name is actually Alexander. I really like it, it suits him down to the ground.

SandyBits · 10/07/2010 18:15

And congratulations btw

Oblomov · 10/07/2010 18:20

God I love Sasha. Russian student though. wonder whether others find it as attractive.

mysteryfairy · 10/07/2010 18:54

It's a gorgeous name for a boy - totally think you should go for it.

It was on my short list, but I would have spelt it Sacha - no idea if that is more correct but for use as a girl's name have only ever seen the Sasha spelling.

If you decide against it I also think Xander is a lovely name and how cool to have the first initial X!

audley · 10/07/2010 19:01

Love Sacha for a boy, would imagine Sasha to be a girl.

Oblomov · 10/07/2010 19:26

sorry. didn't notice that. yes with my knowledge i should have, saCha being the norm SaSha, being an
alternative. go with the c.

can't get my bolds to work, sorry. i think you get what i mean.

sonniebonnie · 10/07/2010 19:28

Yes, I know a little (German) Sasha whose full name is Alexander. Lovely!

annasophia · 10/07/2010 19:33

Sasha is definately a boys' name imo. Lovely nick name for Alexander.

LetThereBeRock · 10/07/2010 19:34

I love Sasha. It's gorgeous.

Mrsmackie · 10/07/2010 21:36

Its usually 'Sacha' for a boy and 'sasha' for a girl.

Sasha (name)

Sasha
Pronunciation SASH-É™, SAH-shÉ™
Gender unisex
Meaning defender, helper of mankind
Origin Slavic

Sasha is a female and male given name. It originated in countries of Central,Eastern and Southern Europe as a diminutive of Alexander and Alexandra. It is also found as a surname, although this is very rare. Alternative spellings include: Sa?a (Slovenian, Serbian, Croatian, Czech, Slovak, Lithuanian), Sasza (Polish), Sashko (Ukrainian), Sascha (German), Sasja (Dutch), and Sacha (French).

This name is especially common in Eastern Europe where it is used primarily by males, although females may also use it as a diminutive of Alexandra.

In Germany, the civil registry offices allow the inscription of Sascha in birth certificates as a formal name but only for boys.

I have a Sacha He is Alexander but we have always called him Sacha. We were talking the other day about whether he would like to be Alexander when he goes to senior school next year, but no, he likes being Sacha. He is 12 and has never been teased about his name. There are so many unusual names around these days that I don't think teasing is really an issue.

Congratulations btw

mopsyflopsy · 10/07/2010 22:03

I like Sasha for a boy and know a lovely 5 year old (Russian heritage). I think Sacha is the French variant.

Lovely name and much more original/unique than Alex!

I think of Sasha as a girls' name, even though I know it can be a boys' name.

I like Alex and Xander as nicknames for Alexander.

MistyB · 10/07/2010 22:08

Sandy is sometimes the short for Alexander in scotland, though I like Sasha and the Russian connection. Despite what old ladies always seem to think, it will be obvious that he is a boy!! We have an Alex and do occassionally get asked if Alex is a boy or a girl when booking things on the phone etc but it's no big deal!

shufflebum · 10/07/2010 22:19

We have a Xander so am biased but he's not Alexander, just Xander as didn't want the nn Alex.
I know a female Sasha and have only recently found out that her real name is Alexandra.

rachel234 · 10/07/2010 22:31

Sasha is a lovely nickname for Alexander, especially given your Russian heritage.

RamonaThePest · 10/07/2010 22:35

Our Serbian and Polish family members all call any Alexander is sight Sasha - no stopping them!

I think it is lovely.

beanlet · 10/07/2010 23:34

Thanks for all these encouraging messages! Very pleased people like Sasha/Sacha for a boy; I just love him so much!

I like Alexander shortened to Sandy?

We had a Sandy in school and he was very popular and good looking.

umf · 12/07/2010 10:36

Love Sacha nn. It's been on our shortlist for both DSs, but Alexander is tricky with our surname. Knew one boy (London, English) just called Sacha, without Alexander long version.

Greensleeves · 12/07/2010 10:37

there's a Sasha in my ds2's class, short for Aleksandr

beautiful name and really suits him!

hulabula · 12/07/2010 10:43

Sasha is a great nickname for Alexander, I prefer it to Sandy or Alex.

Sacha is indeed the French form of Sasha. The French pronounce the 'ch' as 'sh' as in chat, so I guess it makes sense.

In English/German I'd spell it Sasha.

othersideofchannel · 12/07/2010 10:50

I love Sasha for a boy, spelt like this in English. Sacha would be Sa-tch-a....
