Would anyone be up for a coeliac chat thread?

Umm...that's it, really! I was thinking a thread for people with coeliac or a coeliac sufferer in the household where we could share recipe ideas and any other questions might be helpful. I did briefly follow something like this on FB but found it a bit intense, as FB groups tend to be!

My DD (12) has coeliac, diagnosed last year. Still getting to grips with some food alternatives but we have quickly found specific favourites (all in different supermarkets, of course!)

So my first question is...any ideas to make GF couscous a bit more flavoursome?!?

I’m a coeliac. Was just coming on to ask fellow coeliacs if they ever get unexplained left flank pain. I do. Get it occasionally and have done for years. Pretty sure it’s related to my condition. It’s quite painful and feels like my ribs are sore.

anyone else? Wonder if it’s done kind of inflammation?

Could be Gallstones? That's where my pain was. I had my gallbladder out last month, such a relief.

Haven't RTFT yet, but wanted to ask if anyone had tried Promise Bread. I believe it is an Irish company. The bread is the best I've found so far. They also do a sourdough. It's not as good as gluten sourdough, but again it's the best GF I've found.

Lidl used to do absolutely amazing GF cookies but we haven't seen them in ages. Aldi do very nice GF chipolatas. Tesco have GF sausages in their own range (not the free from section) that are half the price, look for a blue bag. Not the highest quality sausage but are at least GF and inexpensive!

We had those cookies too, they were very tasty & a bit cheaper than other supermarkets.

their frozen burgers & fresh meatballs are gluten free, I do like finding accidentally gluten free stuff because it’s cheaper.

aldi chicken meatballs are too

Cous cous is not gluten free! Quinoa is an acceptable alternative 👍

Thanks - yes when I mentioned couscous in my OP I meant the gf kind, made from maize. V hard work to chew and pretty tasteless!

I'm also mourning the loss of the Lidl gluten free cookies. Our local lidl used to have a gluten free section, then the range got reduced and things were dotted around with the regular stuff and now they've disappeared completely.

Joining to learn! Diagnosed just before Christmas following gastroscopy and endoscopy - blood test had been negative. Fantastic GP pursued because iron, B12 and folic acid and ferritin were so low.

My GF favourites are the Mesa Maple cereal, and the M&S cheese crackers - I eat these like crisps! Mostly we just eat naturally GF food. We get Mindful Chef a couple of times a month - expensive but excellent.

My challenges tend to be when I’m out. I go to a lot of meetings with buffet lunches which means sandwiches and sausage rolls. There’s real misunderstanding about cross contamination - when there is a gf option it’s often not separated from the bread and cakes. I now carry several Naked bars wherever I go.

Things I like: Warburtons Tiger Loaf and crumpets, m and S oat loaf, m and s mac and cheese, takeaway from Leon. I’m not much fussed about sweet stuff.

Crikeyalmighty · 06/03/2024 21:30

@Piousbirdofgoodomen I use that bread- pretty decent- Sainsbury's stock it

OneSmallPieceOfCheese · 07/03/2024 18:28

Thanks for the tip about Aldi tempura chicken goujons.... they are a big hit! (Sorry, can't remember who made the recommendation)

Crikeyalmighty · 17/03/2024 18:21

If I can mention too that Leon do fantastic GF chicken nuggets with Korean mayo or ketchup

Does anyone have tips for how to make my beef stew have the depth of flavour that bovril used to give it?

I’d look at Henderson’s relish which I adore and stick in everything (gluten free version of Worcester sauce).

would marmite work? Tesco own brand is safe.

MarchHares · 21/03/2024 18:20

Thank you I’ll give those a go, I really miss bovril 😩

atlaz · 21/03/2024 18:25

On holiday at the moment and I've accidentally bought sugar free cookies from the tiny free from section of the local spar. I really wanted a biscuit 😭

Urgh, its so annoying when sugar free biscuits are next to the gluten free biscuits (and especially when its the same brand as a GF biscuit) and you're shopping in a rush and don't notice

MarchHares · 21/03/2024 19:43

The worst is when they do a free from range that is free from every allergen. Just because I can’t have gluten does not mean I want it to be dairy and egg free as well. I ends up being free from taste.

CrepuscularCritter · 21/03/2024 20:19

I've pretty much given up on bread, as it is generally pants. A few years back there was a bread mix range (Helen's maybe?) that had a proper granary tasting loaf, but that seems to have vanished. Bring on the crackers!

I agree that pancake making is the way for breakfast. I also make and freeze scones (including cheese scones) to keep to hand.

My most recent discovery is quiche. I'm also lactose intolerant, so use lactofree cream and cheese with lardons and onions inside a GF just roll pastry case. The base goes a little soggy, but it's a small and worthwhile sacrifice not to be messing around with trying to make my own pastry.

Hiya, not sure what coeliac is but I also have an autoimmune disease, called Lupus so wasn't sure if these were the same or similar,if you'd like to chat more then feel free an mess me 🤔

Phineyj · 21/03/2024 20:51

I have been eating my way through the M&S gluten free range.

The oaty bread is really quite nice and the coffee and walnut cake, outstanding!

Phineyj · 21/03/2024 20:52

Their spaghetti was good too.

Coeliacs have to completely exclude gluten from their diets. Probably quite different form Lupus so you could try starting your own thread.

CeeCeeDeeBee · 21/03/2024 21:44

Can I join? My DD was diagnosed last year, she's only 7. Neither DH nor I have Coeliac, though.

We've found lots of bits and pieces she likes (those M&S cheese crackers are a win - so spendy though!) but spread across various supermarkets.

We find eating out the hardest. Luckily school have been ok about lunches and she does get a choice.

Yes! My DD gets very annoyed at dairy free in gf food as she is a big fan of cream and cheese (as am I 😉) Although I can see why they like to cover all bases.

Morrisons own gf profiteroles (in the freezer section) contain real whipped cream.

Of course! Yes it's a pricey way of life, that's for sure. And yes we also have specific things we get in different supermarkets!
