Would anyone be up for a coeliac chat thread?

Umm...that's it, really! I was thinking a thread for people with coeliac or a coeliac sufferer in the household where we could share recipe ideas and any other questions might be helpful. I did briefly follow something like this on FB but found it a bit intense, as FB groups tend to be!

My DD (12) has coeliac, diagnosed last year. Still getting to grips with some food alternatives but we have quickly found specific favourites (all in different supermarkets, of course!)

So my first question is...any ideas to make GF couscous a bit more flavoursome?!?

@Squirrel125 thanks for the stir fry sauce recommendation- I've struggled with that one and like stir frys- I use noodles from Holland Barrett - very good-

Sleepychicken · 02/03/2024 14:57

Thank you for the noodle suggestions 😍

Top tip - if you are travelling to Spain, the supermarkets often don't have a gf section but you will find gf products with their non gf counterparts. Also for travel we got some laminated cards in French and Spanish explaining that my daughter was coeliac, and what that means. Helps if your languages aren't great (like mine!)

I was HORRENDOUSLY glutened in Spain- from mistakenly buying bread that was in the free from section, with the other gluten free bread.

I’m a coeliac. Was just coming on to ask fellow coeliacs if they ever get unexplained left flank pain. I do. Get it occasionally and have done for years. Pretty sure it’s related to my condition. It’s quite painful and feels like my ribs are sore.

anyone else? Wonder if it’s done kind of inflammation?

Yes I get this too, my gp said it was inflammation and common x

Wallingtonhall · 03/03/2024 19:50

Thanks. I thought it was probably gluten related. I was out for dinner last night and while I ordered gf food there is always a contamination risk.

i get it on and off.

Those of you who make GF packed lunches - can you recommend a nut free cereal bar? My dd likes naked bars but she can't take nut-containing things to school. Or something (gf) oaty- that kind of thing, ie a bar that's got a bit more to it than a chocolate biscuit!

Can i join? My DD has been diagnosed with Coeliac and it's still really new to us.

Squirrel125 · 04/03/2024 13:15

@plinter thanks, they look good.

@Hotpinkangel19 of course, hello and welcome. It's overwhelming at first, isn't it.

We often get Nairns oat biscuits for lunch boxes. The choc chip ones are yummy, as are the ones that are basically Hobnobs. The cheese ones are delicious too. We have lots of little clip lock boxes for things like popcorn. Cheap tortilla chips from Aldi are GF, the expensive ones usually aren't. Crimbles macaroons for a proper lunchbox treat. Tesco teddy faces are GF and much cheaper than Pom Bear.

OneSmallPieceOfCheese · 04/03/2024 17:45

Sorry, I meant Tesco bunny bites. Teddy faces are from Aldi.

I've been diagnosed 16 years now so my thoughts on bread might not be the same as someone newly diagnosed.

Warburtons gf super soft rolls
https://www.warburtonsglutenfree.com/products/supermarkets/4-white-rolls-0

I think these are ok un toasted, I was finally able to satisfy my crisp sandwich cravings with these.

For wraps the Be free sweet potato are best imo or proper corn tortillas if you can find them.

Can't help on the cous cous, I'd tend to swap for quinoa.

The gf section of our Lidl has disappeared and our local Aldi never had one. There are some things that are gluten free in the regular section that you might not expect, e.g. Aldi do chicken goujons.

I don't miss too much food wise these days, and I've learned to cook a lot but I still really miss the convenience of picking something on the go or going out for dinner without a tonne of research. Holidays are where I feel it the most, when eating has to be planned like a military operation, holidays aren't quite as relaxing.

4 super soft, gluten free rolls with great texture - made to hold your favourite fillings perfectly. Super soft and pre-sliced, these gluten free rolls from Warburtons Gluten Free are practical and convenient, and suitable for the whole family.

I'm struggling to find nice bread, my pre GF preference was something crusty and whole meal like the Waitrose Heyford whole meal , nothing I've found comes close.

M&S GF seems ok in the main, hot cross buns and scones ok, pain au raisin absolutely awful, bread bearable, Tiger rolls quit good but smelt funny

Mrs crimbles GF madeleines are really nice, an expensive GF carrot cake from Betty's of Harrogate was super sweet, almost unbearably so, but tasty. Home made GF scones have been a surprising success and good to keep in the freezer

Evenstar · 04/03/2024 21:23

I actually make my own bread with gluten free oats, though I know some people cannot tolerate those. I use this recipe, and add an extra egg rather than black treacle https://www.flahavans.co.uk/recipe/mary-flahavans-porridge-bread/

Can I join. I've a few days until my gastroscopy, following a positive blood tests a few weeks ago. I was tested as a first degree relative following 20 year old DD's surprise diagnosis late last year when she was anaemic.

I've a lot of vague symptoms which could also be due to perimenopause.Once I'm properly diagnosed, I'll l cut out the gluten and be interested to see what, if any, of those symptoms disappear.

Can anyone share what non gastro symptoms they found disappeared after eating gf and how long it took?

It won't be too difficult to go gf as we mostly cook from scratch and have a fair bit of knowledge on nutrition and now so much more about where to find sneaky gluten. I'm not sure how I will ever let friends cook for me again though. It's not nice feeling like a nuisance. Bread will be the hardest although I'd stopped eating much bread. DH always makes it. Nothing is going to come close.

There’s an app called Gluten Free Card which has them in so many languages. it was free too

They have chicken fillets (I think, basically bigger versions of the nuggets)
Both really good value as they are a normal.price. They are/were meant to have fresh fish goujons also GF but never did find them unfortunately

The bliss marshmallow rice crispy bars are GF, only £1 box in Iceland, home bargains, Poundland

they have quite a variety, and most are GF. DD loves them all, and it is a nice change being able to buy something cheap that's GF!

I either have coeliac disease or non coeliac gluten allergy. I can’t even have marmite without a reaction anymore so liable to thump someone who suggests it’s an “intolerance” 🤣

I try to avoid ultra processed food so most gf substitutes are out. Gf bread is usually powdery shite

id probably flavour couscous with home made stock or, current favourite, teriyaki sauce (which is probably a upf)

Cous cous is not gluten free! Quinoa is an acceptable alternative 👍
