40 today in Melbourne and not nice at all - and I've got aircon and fans!!!

We haven't had a heatwave in a long time - pre lockdown.

Yikes, @wandawaves, I hope your hand is OK.

The heat has broken where I am in Melbourne, even a tiny, feeble, and short-lived pattering of rain. One less nice touch I noticed when taking down a white bedsheet I'd pinned round a vulnerable plant: it was covered in tiny specks of ash. No smell of bushfires though - I suppose the wind isn't in the right direction.

Noooo.... blackout!!
Thankfully I've had the aircon on all day, so hopefully the house will stay a little bit cool for a bit!
It's still 42 degrees outside. Cool change not expected till about 11pm...

How is everyone else going?
How are the Vic people... not near fires i hope?

A late response but quelle pisser. At 42!!! I hope all went well for you overnight, and good today,@wandawaves.

The late change here yesterday in Melbourne happened about 5-6, dropping 25+ degrees in one hour. Of course this can only be achieved by howling wind. Some smoke from the bushfires, but quickly dispersed by the same winds. It's a horrible moment feeling good that you can breathe freely, while the same wind is whipping up the fires in the north of the state.

Here it's been, even in the heat, well, a bit parky in the mornings. I needed a cardi to walk the dogs. Lovely now.
I'm near the sea, on Port Phillip Bay so way away from the fires.

36.2C in Hawke's Bay and very windy. Quite unpleasant really. But I moaned in Lancashire and later Oxfordshire when it was cold and wet, so I cannot now moan about the heat in NZ😎

Oh, go on.

Of course you can.

Yeah power came back on after a couple of hours, so it wasn't too bad. Plus with the southerly, we managed to actually get the house back to a nice temperature.
Today was 23! Lovely!
And a little smoky here this morning too, but it went away quickly. Not even sure where the smoke was from; there's no fires anywhere near, but yeah I guess the wind just carried it in.

Glad to hear this, @wandawaves. All good here, i.e manageable. I keep up with watering and am setting about reviving plants with seaweed concentrate and judicious cutting out of the scorched leaves - got to be careful as even the crispy ones make cover for the green.
