40 today in Melbourne and not nice at all - and I've got aircon and fans!!!

We haven't had a heatwave in a long time - pre lockdown.

Hit 34 in Sydney today and expected to reach 40 on Saturday! At least I’m WFH for the rest of the week as don’t fancy commuting!

FiveShelties · 07/01/2026 06:34

28C today here in Hawke's Bay, which is lovely. Forecast for weekend is 35C to 37C which is a little warm😁

Passwordsaremynemesis · 07/01/2026 06:39

It’s a very pleasant 30 here in Perth, but going up to mid 30s by the weekend, which suits me as perfect beach and pool weather. We had to get new aircon this year as our ancient system died in the middle of last summer, and I am very much enjoying the upgrade, I didn’t realise just how crap the old air con was!

PonyPals · 07/01/2026 06:56

41 in my suburbs in Melbourne. Feels a little warm but nice to be inside in Aircon

echt · 07/01/2026 07:34

Cooling down now.

I'm near the beach but can't take my dog as he has a split toenail and needs to keep out of water for a while.

This morning I phoned up my back-to back neighbour who is her late 80s and lives alone, to check on her. No aircon, but a well-designed house with deep eaves and some south-facing rooms.
She wanted some help in supporting a friend in her 90s, whose dementia has taken a disturbing turn, in this case, getting in touch with the care home her DH lives in. Though the circumstances are sad, I was glad to see her generous, active spirit seeking to help another.

Time to do some watering. I've just felt the pavement out side my house. Yikes. The dogs won't be walked until 10.00. tonight.

It was 32 or something today but has cooled down nicely this evening. Currently sitting outside with the dogs, and having an iced tea.

Same again for tomorrow and Friday, then 41 predicted for Saturday. I shall be hibernating with the aircon on on Saturday!

MoondustandFairies · 07/01/2026 08:04

I'm in Hawkes Bay too & not coping well with the heat - expected temps in Hastings this weekend will be 37!
We have grandkids visiting this week so while I'd like to lay semi coma like in a cold bath tub their energy levels just keep on. And on.
But it is summer & we say all winter how we look forward to summer days just like these 😂

Ncchange · 07/01/2026 08:25

I am in the UK where it is flipping freezing and my son sent me screenshot of 42c in Melbourne, definitely not dog walking temps ! He has outdoor job in Melbourne and said it wasn’t pleasant!

ZenNudist · 07/01/2026 08:30

Just reading this from in bed in UK, too cold to go out in snow and ice

I feel for you. Most of my friends and family are in the UK so I've been getting the pics of snow (very nice), and the continuing very low temps (rather less so).

Not me!! I love winter. When I read the current threads on MN with the UK people complaining about the cold, I just think how lovely it sounds! 🤣

3flyingducksarrive · 07/01/2026 13:23

It's only going as high as 32 degrees here in Brisbane for the next few days. That's hot enough after the November heatwave we had.

I am from Lancashire and the first day of the snow is lovely - everything looks so pretty. Then it is downhill from there.

There are many things I miss from England but the winter weather is not one of them😁

TheSandgroper · 08/01/2026 01:27

It’s glorious in Busselton. Absolute perfection.

SouthernNights59 · 08/01/2026 03:13

It's only 22 where I am in the South Island of NZ. It's supposed to reach 30 on Sunday, then back to the mid-twenties again. What happened to summer????

echt · 08/01/2026 04:43

A bearable 31 today and I've hit the sweet spot with the AC - start early on 25. I've had to use it so rarely - no heatwaves since I had it fitted now I think of it - that I've never had to think about how best to use it.

Lots of non-native plants in my garden very much burned off but they'll get over it, drop the dead leaves and start again with a seaweed feed once this is over. The tomatoes have ripened beautifully though. 🍅

Tomorrow's 41 will be a doozy. Like @SouthernNights59's NZ, it'll be 20s after. A weird summer.

Instead of putting the ac straight to cool, use it on Dry as long as possible. Much cheaper energy wise and it works really well. We usually only move to Cool after 3.30 pm and bring it back to Dry as the sun goes down. (No daylight savings here).

pop into Bunnings and stock up on shade cloth and cover your delicate plants and your lawn with it. Your plants will love you.

echt · 08/01/2026 05:06

Thanks for the AC tip, @TheSandgroper. I have shade cloth for the veggie patch, and move the delicate stuff about.
No lawn.

Yesterday’s max in South Australia was 45.2° in Port Augusta - only marginally better today - still stinking hot.

Ozgirl76 · 09/01/2026 00:17

Pretty warm in Sydney today but my son is down in Albury in a tennis tournament this weekend and it’s due to be 42! He played his first match at 7.30 this morning to beat the heat and they will cancel matches if it goes above 32 but even 32 in the full sun on a court is warm!

I shall be hiding inside in the air con until Sunday.

Ncchange · 09/01/2026 00:25

One of my sons has his last day in Australia and definitely soaking up the heat.
I was there 4 weeks ago and am already trying to work out when I will be back to enjoy.X

echt · 09/01/2026 00:49

Lots of cloud cover this morning in Melbourne, so nearly four good hours of cooler weather before the onslaught of 43.

3flyingducksarrive · 09/01/2026 01:42

We bought a new Daikin a/c and the Dry/Dehumidity setting does nothing. Our other aircon is excellent on that setting.

FiveShelties · 09/01/2026 03:20

32C in Hawke's Bay and very windy. Forecast for 35C tomorrow and 38C on Sunday. We have a covered patio area and hiding there.😎

wandawaves · 09/01/2026 05:43

Bloody burnt my hand on the seat belt buckle today 🤣
